How much does it cost to install carpet on stairs?

The number of stairs you want carpeted in your home will directly affect your carpet installation cost. Putting carpet on stairs generally increases the labor time and requires a higher degree of detail than laying carpet flat. Where you live in the country also plays a role in your carpet installation cost. Carpet installation companies in smaller towns with a lower cost of living and a lower cost to do business (insurance, company vehicles, employee labor, etc.) can usually offer their customers lower rates than companies in large cities where the cost of living and the cost to do business are higher. Carpet pros will often quote you a flat rate per stair once they do a site visit to provide an estimate. They’ll take into account the size of each stair you want carpeted (including both the step and the riser), and what type of stair it is. For example, the cost might range between $3 and $10 per stair for labor only. On the higher end of the spectrum, box stairs or staircase stairs with spindles that must be worked around might cost between $15 and $25 per stair.

How much does it cost to carpet a bedroom?

If you’re building a new home, remodeling, or ready for new carpet in your bedroom, you’ll want to know carpet installation costs. Here are the factors that affect the cost of your new bedroom carpet:

  • Installation cost per square yard: From under $2 to over $6. Carpet companies have a labor cost per square foot for installing your new carpet. Depending on where you live in the country, that rate can vary greatly. This rate does not include the cost of the carpet.
  • Type of carpet: from $1 per square foot to $20 or more per square foot. The fibers that make up your carpet will have a direct effect on cost. As an example, specialty wool carpets may start at about $10 per square foot, while a manufactured fiber like nylon may be about $2 per square foot.
  • Removal of old carpet: from $1 to $4 per square yard. Old carpet is labor-intensive to remove and also costs money to dispose of or recycle. The cost to remove carpet will depend on how much carpet you need removed and whether your installation pros offer a discounted rate for installing your new carpet at the same time.
  • Subfloor repair: from $40 to $70 per hour (plus materials cost). If the flooring underneath your old carpet is damaged, it must be repaired before the new carpet is installed. Many carpet pros can offer this service, or you can hire a handyman to handle the job.
  • Type of carpet pad: $1 per square yard and up, depending on the thickness. The cost to install carpet pad is typically included with the labor cost per yard of installing the carpet itself.

How much does it cost to install carpet?

If you’re ready to bring new life into your house with a makeover from the ground up, you’re ready to learn more about carpet installation costs. Installation costs vary greatly, depending on a number of factors such as the type of carpet, the number of square yards, any necessary repair work, the number of stairs you have, and where you live. Due to these variables, the national average cost of carpet installation ranges between $200 and $4,500.

To start planning for your new carpet, measure roughly how many square yards of carpet you’ll need. Research the main carpet styles and materials you like to get a feel for what they cost. Nylon carpets are typically the least expensive, and wool is one of the higher-end carpets. Prices per square foot might range from under $2 to over $10, depending on materials. Count the number of stairs you want carpeted; each one might average between $3 and $10 (or more for box steps). Carpet removal can be an added cost as well, averaging $1-$4 per square yard, depending on the company and regional disposal costs.

How much is the cheapest carpet?

If you’re looking to reduce carpet installation costs, there are several ways to save. Start by considering your carpeting needs. Manufactured materials such as polyester and nylon will be cheaper than natural fibers such as wool. From big box retailers, starting prices for olefin-based carpet are approximately 50 cents per square foot — making the cost under $5 per square yard. Indoor carpets made with olefin fibers are typically the least expensive on the market. Keep in mind that olefin fibers are not as soft on bare feet as other fibers, so are often used in areas like basements, playrooms or indoor patios. Nylon and polyester are good options to reduce carpet installation costs while still creating a cozy feel. The face weight, fiber construction and density of a carpet all affect the cost per square foot. The cheapest nylon or polyester carpets can start at just under $2 per square foot, making them about $18 per square yard. Lower-cost carpet tends to wear out more quickly and show stains more easily, so avoid light colors and vacuum regularly to keep the fibers clear of dirt that might age it too quickly.

How long does carpet installation take?

You can expect carpet installation to take anywhere between several hours and a day. The length of the job depends on the scope of the project, room size, the type of carpet being installed and the condition of the work space. If your carpet crew needs to move furniture or work around other contractors, expect the project to take longer. Odd-shaped rooms with nooks and carpeted closets will also add time.

How do you plan for a carpet installation project?

Start by researching your options and figuring out the following:

  • What kind of carpet do you want?
  • How big are the rooms where you plan to install the carpet?
  • What type of backing is required?
  • Does the subfloor need to be prepared?
  • Do you need to make any repairs to your flooring?
  • When do you want the installation process done?
  • What is your budget?
  • Who is the best company or contractor in your area for the project?

Next, remove furniture from the room and give it a deep clean. Hire contractors to remove the current flooring if necessary. Schedule your carpet installer to have access to the room for as many days as they need for the project.

How do you measure for carpet installation?

The first step is to measure your room’s length and width, adding 2-3 three inches to each dimension to account for doorways and  trimming. Measure additional sections, like the other part of an L-shaped room. Multiply the length times width to get the overall area of carpeting. When measuring for stairs, make sure to measure all the way around the nosing of the stairs to account for extra carpeting needed.

What is tackless carpet installation?

Tackless carpet installation (or stretch-in installation) involves installing carpeting without the use of tacks. With this method, your flooring contractor will place the carpet over separate carpet cushions and secure it in place with a power stretcher, according to the Carpet and Rug Institute.

She came to our house and brought multiple samples of carpet and explained the difference of the various types of carpet. After installation she came by to check if we were happy with the work done. I like the look of the carpet, padding makes it feel comfortable and it feels so soft and thick. The installer was efficient. It was great having them remove and haul away the old carpet, move the furniture, and put everything back.

Ortiz flooring did a great job with install of carpet a year ago. I recently had an issue with the carpet coming apart from the room connector. They were VERY responsive and came to fix my issue the next day! It now looks as good as new. Thank you.

Jenn worked with me being a new mother and having a lot of requests for the new baby. We worked together to find the PERFECT carpet. She even came back twice to make sure i was satisfied before going through with the final purchase. The two guys that installed carpet were very professional and accommodating.

We needed new carpet so we could get our home listed for sale. Kimi came out and gave us a free estimate the day we connected with her via Thumbtack, which was great! The newly installed carpet looks and feels good, but there were some communication struggles prior to and during install, which held up our photographer and listing process by a day. Not a huge deal, but if you're on a tight deadline, you may want to build an extra day into it. I would recommend Kimi's Carpets Plus as they did a good job and the pricing was better than many other companies in the area.

Ortiz Flooring came and pulled up old carpet/pad, and installed new pad and carpet throughout my upstairs. They also moved all the furniture to do the work. Super nice guys, very efficient and paid attention to detail. The work was excellent. Alvaro was extremely flexible and scheduled the installation completely at my convenience. I could not be happier! And the price was far superior to all others I received quotes from. My house feels new and fresh!

We had our entire upstairs and two sets of stairs re-carpeted. Jenn came to our house, brought samples, made great recommendations and was competitive with her pricing. We were in a rush as we were showing our house to sell that week. She got a great crew in to remove our old carpet and install the new. They worked all day without a break. We sold our house the next day on the first showing! Highly recommend Jenn and At Home Flooring and Carpet.

Thanks to Covid this review is a little late. I really enjoyed working with Happy Floors to install carpet in my closet. It was a small job that the big carpet store dropped the ball on. They were too busy to do my closet despite having agreed to do it previously. So what to do…enter Happy Floors and Thumbtack and within 24-48 hours my carpet was in my closet looking lush and lovely. I’m very pleased not just with the work but with the professional and timely way it was handled. Excellent work! I’m very happy with Happy Floors!

Traditions by far exceeded my expectations!! Jen is so knowledgable and has all the latest flooring options. The whole process from picking flooring to install was seamless and calming. The install crew was amazing! We got all new Core-Tec flooring (Which is amazing!!! Love it!) and carpet throughout the whole house. Everything is installed perfectly. All lines of flooring line up perfect, carpet is tacked down tight. I couldn't be happier with the install. The price of doing the whole house was so reasonable. That also added ease to the project. You can stop searching who will do your next flooring project, because Traditions is spot on! Plus everyone at Traditions is so friendly and nice, always available to answer any and all questions. You will be so pleased you went with Traditions. I know I can't stop raving about them! Thank you for making my house a home Traditions!

Alvero and his team were outstanding! I highly recommend Ortiz Flooring. My experience with Ortiz Flooring has been great. Alvero is one of the most professional and responsive people that I have ever dealt with. He met me on site at my townhome with plenty of samples for me to choose from and we were able to schedule the installation date for the carpet and vinyl flooring. On the day of the install, he and his crew were able to complete the job in a single day and my place looked great when they were done. I will definitely use them again if I have any flooring needs.

We hired Jenn to install carpet and vinyl in our home. Her team did a wonderful job! She is very reasonably priced, easy to talk to, and would constantly check on the jobsite to make sure everything ran smoothly. Her team is probably one of the hardest working I have ever seen. They worked past 7pm and came back early the next morning to complete the job. We will definitely use her again in the future.
