The private investigator we worked with from Secure Investigators was very polite, attentive, and responsive - a true professional. At every step of the way, he made sure we were updated and given options. His genuine concern put us at ease and proved that he had our best interests in mind. He was very good about laying out the plans and managing expectations. He checked in often and made it easy for us to step back and let him do his job. The last part is the toughest part because it's easy to worry that you'll be caught or an investigation will turn up no results. It's a lot of money to spend but the peace of mind is worth it. These guys all seem to be very thorough and experienced. What was particularly impressive is how well-connected our investigator was. He had enough contacts everywhere to gather information and have extra eyes and ears everywhere. It was like being in an old Nancy Drew or Hardy Boys model - it was more thrilling than scary, and I'm a worry wart so that's saying something. Definitely would use their services again but, hopefully, I won't have to. Highly recommended.

I would recommend Brandon to assist anyone I know. Within 24 hours he had information for me. He is dedicated and he is professional. I felt like I was his only client. He was always a text or a call away. Due to his work ethic and professionalism in pictures and videos I had gotten all the evidence I needed to ensure my children and I would be protected.

I offer private investigations concerning marital affairs, abuse and child custody. Professional service is a must!

All investigations are free; we never charge for our services. Who are we? Whether by scientific curiosity or personal experience about the possibilities of afterlife, we, the members of P.I.T. Crew NC (The Paranormal Investigation Team of North Carolina), have gathered together to bring our unique passion and talents to the investigation of the paranormal. We adhere to the proof-based, no-nonsense techniques that have developed such great investigation teams as The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS), a standard in the industry. The members on our team have formally been trained by TAPS on the USS North Carolina to make certain that our investigations are objective, professional and thorough. We acknowledge the personal and sometimes traumatic nature of incomprehensible activities in a workplace or home, and we deal with every individual case with the experiences and concerns of the people affected in mind. Ultimately, we would like to find simple, everyday explanations for our clients' experiences to "debunk" their claims. Our investigation approach, however, also allows for those instances when we cannot explain these claims or evidence, which we collect. P.I.T. Crew NC will do everything we can to provide solutions to our clients' concerns and the nature of the activity. Our investigations begin with a comprehensive interview with any and all parties affected by the activities. Where needed, team members will research historical material on areas or structures for pertinent information. We have state-of-the-art equipment, which is then deployed according to client experiences, relying on both interactive studies by the investigators and passive monitoring equipment. Our team will then thoroughly review and analyze all media collected, applying our objective, proof-based standards to all possible events. Results of all investigations will be presented as the investigative team's opinion, based on a clinically sound, thorough evaluation of the media collected. What do we do? Our investigations typically correspond to the following guidelines: * Client interview * Setup of audio/video equipment * Lights out (investigation time: at least 4 hours) * Cleanup and departure * Analysis of evidence * Findings report Where do we go? Although located in Fuquay Varina, we will investigate anywhere in North Carolina and the surrounding states on short notice but will consider extensive travel. Due to natural factors that are beyond our control, we typically avoid outdoor investigations, but contact us to discuss the possibilities. Look us up on Facebook, and search P.I.T. Crew NC -- serious inquires only.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a private investigator do?

First and foremost, good private investigators follow laws. Unlike on TV, they don’t break in windows or hack into hospital computer systems to get you intel. When you hire a private investigator, you’re hiring a professional to gather facts and find information for you. Although they can’t obtain certain information (such as health records), they do have access to information that most civilians do not. Often private investigators are hired to perform surveillance or background checks or investigate cases such as adultery, child custody, missing persons, hidden assets, or debugging, and theft or other crimes.

Private investigators can be hired to interview people and provide that information to the client, perform photo or video surveillance, monitor activity at a location where you suspect criminal activities or questionable behavior, track a person’s movements, find missing people, do deep-dive background checks, and more. Private investigation can be helpful if you’re trying to get a court order but need evidence. Private investigators can also help find birth parents. Nationally, the average price range for private investigation is $70-$210 per hour.

What does a private investigator cost?

Private investigation isn’t just for blockbuster action movies. Hiring a private investigator can help in all kinds of situations ranging from finding a birth parent to improving personal security. Nationally, the average price range for private investigation is $70-$210, although pricing often hovers between $40 and $100 depending on the complexity of the services you need. Where you live in the country will affect your costs for private investigation; larger cities have higher business overhead and a higher cost of living, which in turn means higher service rates. The complexity of your case can also affect cost. A basic background check may have a flat rate, while hiring a private investigator to help with your child custody case may require more legwork and research, and therefore cost more. Some private investigators work on retainer. A retainer is essentially a nonrefundable deposit you pay to the professional — meaning you have retained their services — who then works against that amount. Here are some examples of average private investigation costs:

  • Hourly rate: $60-$70; costs can vary based on current fuel prices.
  • Flat rate: $100 for comprehensive background investigation services.
  • Retainer: $1,500 minimum retainer required by some pros before starting work.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
