I still haven't published my book (darn economics!), but I was very pleased with Glenn's efforts on editing a romance-adventure (42k words) I felt was worth paying someone to get really right before submitting. He gave solid reasons for anything he felt could be left out, and when he suggested moving parts around, it made obvious sense. I hadn't introduced the bad guy until chapter 11 or 12 (other stuff seemed more important), he moved to Ch. 6 because "even if you don't use him all the time or until much later, people need to know he exists, why, and what impact might/will have (vs. just popping in near end).

Lauren did a really great job producing website copy for my SAAS startup. Not only was she able to guide me through the creative process, but she also helped structure some of my ideas on the subject. Ultimately she produced some great copy, which has been very well received by our customers.

I am very thankful I hired Tabitha. She is very professional and good at what she does! I am very pleased with her edits and honestly couldn't imagine what my site content would look like if I didn't hire her! I definitely recommend her to others. She is extremely articulate! Keep up the great work!

I have never felt the need for a website, but perhaps I'll come to realize it would be a business asset. My main qualifications are that I was educated in Raleigh, NC, back in the day when good grammar was thoroughly ingrained in us from the early grades on up to high school; and after I majored in English Education at UNC, and taught 8th grade English (with a strong emphasis on grammar!). I am thoroughly disappointed that schools no longer tend to teach the principle parts of verbs, case, conjugation, phonics, and even spelling! I have proofread for a few local writers. I realize this is a lot to ask, but if you'll just trust that my generation was the be-all and end-all of grammar correctness, I promise you will not be disappointed. Don't ever simply rely on spellcheck, etc. There are tons of mistakes on those sites. And often, there will be perfectly legitimate words that they say are not in the dictionary. Where are they looking? I have to get out my old college Webster's to prove them wrong. That deficit never ceases to amaze me! I edit papers and manuscripts from my home, since I am a retired (former) teacher and (also former) stay-at-home mom. My main testimonial is that my students - years after I'd taught them - used to call my mother's home asking for me. When they found that I had moved out of state, they would tell my mom that I was the best English teacher they had ever had and just wanted to thank me for preparing them for more advanced schooling. Some of these students were in high school by then, but many of them had graduated from college! Nothing pleases a teacher more that to realize that she's made a difference in her pupils' lives. My most recent proofreading/editing 'job' was for a friend who had written a 3-volume fantasy series. I did not charge her because she was a lifelong friend, and her creativity was so beyond belief that I felt honored to be able to correct her grammar or awkward sentence structure. We still have not found a publisher for her, but seeing her book in print would be a dream come true for both of us. I, myself, have written 1.5 books (my mother broke her hip halfway through the second one and I simply never got back to it) and a children's book, which I also illustrated. None of them were ever published. I always enjoyed writing, regardless of any success, plus unknowns find it almost impossible to find publishers who will take on the risk of representing a novice, regardless of his/her talent. But I am sure that my writer friend's books, would rank right up there with the Harry Potter series. And I'm not even a fantasy-genre fan! I offer a full guarantee: Money refunded for any pages on which you find a mistake! I am a very ethical person, prompt, efficient, and trustworthy. Hope to hear from you soon. Linda

Everyone has their own writing style, but is your style going to engage the audience you're trying to reach? Is your style going to get your point across with clarity while maintaining the interest of the reader? Oftentimes, a few changes of words, paragraph structure, or new ideas will get you the results you seek. Why not spend a few dollars to make your document shine brighter than the rest? Are you someone who knows what you want to say, but a little unsure how to convey your message in words? If so, let me be your thought translator. I'd enjoy writing anything from an e-mail, letter, resume, cover letter, offer, resignation letter, letter of recommendation, letter of complaint - whatever the subject or need, I'm here to assist! My reading style is to not only absorb the content of the writer but to also engage myself in the writing style that others use. For many years in my day job, I have been the "go-to" person (for senior-level corporate executives) to review documents for grammatical errors, content, and reader-friendliness. In my spare time, I write poetry and am working on writing my first self-help book for teenage girls. Writing is a gift for me. Let me share my gift of writing with you.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

      • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
      • Strong writing skills.
      • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
      • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
      • Expertise in your target area.
      • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

      • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
      • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
      • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
      • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
