We had a clogged drain in the kitchen. The kitchen is in the process of remodeling, so the sink was not there and no water to flush down the drain. I communicated with Jason via text messaging, sending him pictures and voicing my concerns. He answered all my questions very patiently even before arriving for the job. At the job, he was very professional and careful. He cleaned the drain, used the camera to check it, and cleaned up after he was done. He said that he warranties his work and we can call him back if anything goes wrong after the sink is installed. (The sink has not been installed yet, as of today.) We are very satisfied with his service and will be calling him again for future projects.

The Tech from Service Guys arrived at our home early on a Saturday morning, just as we had requested. He explained how he would make the repairs and got to work right away. We were disappointed with the resealing of a sink drain. The finished project looked sloppy and messy. We could have done that ourselves, but we hired a professional thinking he would do a better job than us. The other projects (fixing a broken kitchen drawer, installing a drawer pull, and hanging two kitchen shelves) were done quickly and to our satisfaction. We only wish the resealed drain was cleaner, but otherwise we are glad we hired the Service Guys.

Hired Walter to check out a clogged toilet drain. Turned out it was a broken main sewer line which he was also able to repair. I liked how he is very systematic in his approach to identify the problem and his philosophy to only fix what is broken. Also explains and communicates well and works with you. Since he can do a lot of very different tasks, I am sure I will hire him in the future and can also recommend him to everybody.

My toilet was backed up and overflowed. Plumber Rob was great. He was neat, professional and courteous. I checked with 3 or 4 other company's before contacting BlueKrait drain cleaning and they had the best prices. As a woman I felt safe to have Rob in my home doing the work. He was neat and cleaned up after himself. I would definitely recommend BlueKrait service.

This was the SECOND time we have used Ivan for hanging up our two TVs ( a 65in and a 42in) because we moved. He always does an amazing job! Punctual, amazing price, and professional quality job! He came over and was done in like 1 hr and both TVs are hung, and he cleaned up any mess afterwards. Highly recommend him for his value and professional, outstanding service!

I highly recommend Celtic Piping and Heating. Edward got back to me quickly with an online quote while many other plumbers or contractors refuse to provide even a ballpark estimate without seeing the project. (Translation: it's harder to refuse when someone is standing in your apartment ready to work even if the price is outrageous!) Edward called me back within 30 minutes to arrange for a time and arrived promptly... on a Saturday, no less! I had failed to mention that I needed a drain installed in addition to two faucets and that wasn't a problem for him. He clearly knows what he is doing and my kitchen and bathroom now have a much more updated look thanks to his efforts. Edward is a true professional and he clearly takes pride in what he does. He left me with his card in case there were any problems as he guarantees his work. I don't think that I'll be needing it... until I have another project, that is! Terrific!

He arrived on time as scheduled and went straight to work immediately. He fixed a clogged drain for me but had to replace damaged pipes before he completed the job. He walked with me to the hardware store to ensure I purchased the right materials. He was very professional and appropriate at all times. He removed sliding shower doors and the frame, he cleaned up after he finished working and did not leave any mess. I would definitely recommend him for any plumbing and/or electrical job! His prices are also very competitive!

He called quickly and made an appointment very quickly. He arrived on time. We had to replace a drain from the outside. I think he did great work, but to gain access to the drain, he had to use a crowbar and ended up doing some damage to the exterior wood and paint. I was pleased that he also snaked another line. The cost was quite high (more than I would have thought.) However it was done very quickly and my worries are behind me, although I am still trying to get the wood replaced and repainted.

Juan came over on time. There were three things I needed fixed. A drain issue in my bathtub. A pipe leak in the kitchen sink. A pipe leak in the bathroom sink. He fixed the kitchen sink pipe relatively quickly once he evaluated what needed to be done. The bathroom sink was the challenge. Due to the weird setup, Juan had to take apart my wooden set up to get to the pipes. He took it apart, fixed the complex piping and put together the furniture sink cabinet. Next he used a snake to remove all the gunk primarily due to years of hair trapped in there. It will approximately 3 hours of his time and he came at 8pm. He charged me a low price for the job IMO so I gave him a great tip to reward him for the professional service and time. I would definitely recommend him. He knows his plumbing and doesn’t stop until it’s fixed.

Hired Gjo to fix the leaking faucet, missing drain stopper, loose toilet and worn drainage pipe. They are very attentive to details. The job was beautifully done. They are willing to communicate and ask and confirm everything before they work on it. The price is good. Willing to hire them again for future plumbing work.

Very Efficient team and super quick. I had the chance to have Steve and his helper who happened to be quick and clean who fixed my drain. One thing i have never seen before is plumbers wearing shoe covers. Well they DID. I found that to be really respectful. Highly recommended!

We had a very good experience with R&R Plumbing. We had issues with a leak at the bathtub. Though it was not time critical, we got a quick appointment and the leak was fixed very quickly. They were accommodating of our schedule. They had to open the basement ceiling to fix the issue and later closed it and covered the area as well. Soon after this was fixed, we had another issue- a drain was clogged, for which we called them again. Although it was the weekend, Rezart sent his personnel and looked at the issue and it was fixed the next day. Overall, we had a very good experience with R&R plumbing. They are customer focused and the job was neatly executed. We would highly recommend them.

I simply could not be more pleased with my experience with CJ from Waterflow, cannot imagine ever hiring anyone else for projects in my apartment, and am already recommending him to my friends. I received several quotes through Thumbtack for contractors to replace my bathroom vanity and sink. However, I made the decision to hire CJ very early in the process based on his way of communicating. CJ was always highly responsive incredibly polite, and followed up to check in on my plans without ever making me feel that I was being pressured. On the day of the installation, he was a little delayed due to traffic but called precisely at his promised arrival time to let me know. He was also very engaging and easy to communicate with and I learned a lot from observing him. I have been a member of the Co-Op board for my building for many years and also undertook a major renovation in my apartment a few years ago. As a result, I know a thing or two about dealing with contractors. With all things considered, working with CJ has been my most positive contractor experience to date. I had decided to replace the vanity and sink in my bathroom but elected to keep the original faucet, which went well with the decor. In hindsight, this was not the best choice since the existing faucet turned out to be quite corroded once CJ was able to remove it. I am also quite handy and have built and repaired many things in my home myself, but knew that this job was beyond my ability to take on alone. I appreciated the fact that CJ was always receptive to my suggestions. He was very patient in everything that he did and worked delicately and carefully to preserve the existing faucet, taking his time to lubricate all the joints and make sure that al of the mechanisms were working properly.. Unfortunately, a key connector, which was probably already broken and glued together, came apart as he was trying to install it on the new sink. It was clear that we were not going to be able to reuse the old unit after all and CJ drove me to the hardware store to get a replacement. Before we left the store, he made sure that he checked all of the mechanisms for the one that we would purchase and made sure that h=it would be compatible with the new sink and vanity top. Unlike many contractors that I have worked with, CJ actually read the manual for the new faucet to make sure that his approach to the installation was correct. However, he clearly understood all of the mechanisms that he was working with and would take the time to explain things to me as he went along. I learned very quickly to trust his judgment. We ended up having to remove the bathroom door in order to get the new vanity in place, and there were quite a few challenges related to the alignment of the drain and accommodation of the shutoff valves and other existing fixtures with the shelving inside the vanity. All of this made the job take a lot longer than anticipated, but CJ remained incredibly patient and focused on all the finer details necessary to get the job done right. He was also fully prepared to honor his original estimate, which was beyond reasonable. Knowing it was well deserved, I paid CJ almost all of the extra cash that I had on hand and would have gladly paid even more. His attitude throughout the entire process was simply outstanding and his work ethic is exemplary. CJ will be my go-to hire for any other projects that I take on in my home.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
