Simply Moving did a terrific job. The movers D'ror (Daniel) and Jose were punctual, careful with the packing and moving and very pleasant to work with. They made the move easy. We had a mix-up with the building management that delayed the move-out, but they were patient and kept their focus on expediting the move. Simply Moving expedited the Certificate of Insurance and rushed getting it to the building management to help us proceed. I would definitely use Simply Moving again, especially if we could get D’ror (Daniel) and Jose.

Reginald was great to work with. He communicated well ahead of time for a cancelation due to snow and rescheduled quickly two days later. Showed up on-time and was very professional with his team during the move. We could not be happier with our move and would highly recommend Reginald's, Movers-For-A Cause.

Nothing beats Great Movers in the service they offered. This was a fairly last minute move and they managed to arrange a crew for my move from China Town to Bronx. They were very accommodating. Crew arrived right on time in fact they were in my apartment 10 minutes before the decided time. With an hour everything was out of my apartment in truck. Not sure which route they took to bronx but they made it to my new apartment before me. Not sure how they managed to speed that big truck. Any way my point is if you are looking for moving company in NYC, go for Great Movers!

What can I say about Dariusz that hasn't already been said in other reviews? Not much! He's kind, prompt, generous, easy to work with, and is a true professional. As someone who works in a hotel for a living, I appreciate hospitality and you definitely get that from Dariusz. He has found a niche in the market where most movers do not care about the customer or the items that they move. He is not like that and while only working with him once (so far) I know that he will go the extra mile each time for his customers. I would hire him and his team again in a heartbeat, and plan to for any future move.

Jeff and his crew were fantastic to work with. They were on time for the pickup and packed the baby grand piano with complete care. They also set up the piano with efficiency and care. They left everything clean and had the piano moved in 3hrs. All of the movers were polite and friendly. The price was reasonable.

Just moved from Nolita to East Village with Blue Moving. This is my second move in NYC and I have to say that this company exceeded my expectations, completely. From the guys on the phone, to the movers, all went great. Great price, great service. I highly recommend them. p.s. When you call them ask for Mitko, one of the owners, he really is on top of things and will take care of you.

Movers were 30 min late, but were very apologetic and it didn't hinder the moving. Both were very polite and friendly. They were very very careful and surprisingly fast. I was extremely please. Communication with the company was shockingly fast--they're extremely responsive. Typically I would get a response within 5-10 minutes. They were as flexible as possible given my moving situation and the price was fair. Overall I am very very very pleased and if I move within the area again, I will definitely use these guys again if I can. Best moving experience I've had thus far.

Incredibly easy to work with. Everything was straight forward, they were very competitive and extremely fast in their responses. On the move day, the movers arrived in front of our building half an hour earlier, were efficient, patient, and professional in every possible way. Unpacking done – not a single item was broken or damaged. I will be recommending these guys to anyone who asks for a mover.

Bluebell service and movers were excellent, to say the least. The movers handled my furniture and items with extreme caution and care. Just about EVERYTHING was bubble wrapped. The only downside is the increased cost after the estimate for items over 40. Becareful of extra added costs for stairs over 12. PLEASE make an attempt to get rid of items you no longer need or use, to cut down on the cost of packing. ALL-IN-ALL, they were excellent and professional. I would use them again on my next move.

Considering they're charging by the hour the movers were working at an exceptionally slow pace. One of the movers kept stopping completely tp chit chat and flirt with me and show me his hobbies on his phone, or was wandering around aimlessly with one object not knowing where to put it down. Another mover broke the leg off of one of my wardrobes and took a half hour detour to get tools to replace it, then spent an hour of his time just putting the foot of that wardrobe on to the furniture again. Even with a slight discount due to that fact, I felt like having 3 people move a small room of stuff to a studio 2 miles down the road to the new apartment should not have taken more than 4 hours.

I waited until the last minute to plan my move (days before), and Moved help me figure out everything from clothing donations to negotiating a great price on quality movers. This was also my first time using movers and my Moved moving assistant, Erin, was able to answer all of my questions about the process. Truly all I had to do was download the app, tell them what I needed and they made it happen. App is also very easy. Overall great and would definitely use them again/recommend to others stressed about a move!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
