Ellen was lovely to work with and very attentive and communicative which is essential when planning a party. My party was a small holiday one but the hors d'oeuvres she made were fabulous and the leftovers made wonderful work lunches :). Thanks Ellen!

Chris and his team were the perfect choice for our event. From our first conversation through execution, the process was seamless and efficient. Chris was always quick to respond and tailored a menu of hors d'oeuvres and drinks that were perfect for the occasion and within our budget. I would absolutely recommend him to others and plan to use NY Catering Service again for our holiday party.

Chef Lauren and her crew were such a pleasure to work with! I specifically chose Bacco Catered Events because of the prompt response level and highly personalized attention to detail from the very beginning. Our holiday cocktail party is the highlight of our year. However, Chef Lauren and her staff made it even more festive and decadent than we could have ever dreamed of! Not only was each member of the Bacco staff incredibly professional, but they each made our guests feel completely taken care of for the entire night. The food was not only delicious, but the presentation of both the pass around hors d'oeuvres and the stationary food was so beautiful. Additionally, the bartender created yet an additional focal point in the bar that many guests commented on how beautiful it was! I feel SO lucky to have found Chef Lauren! We have already set our date for December of 2017!

Tamara Shenkle was fantastic to work with. From start to finish, Tamara professionally brought me through the process of planning our marriage celebration NYC cocktail party. From the delicious menu (the guests raved perfectly bite sized hors d'ourves), cocktails & bar (she handled everything) to the handling of a lovely prosecco toast for fifty of our closest friends. Amoraco's food was fresh, exquisite, the glass and serving ware completely taken care of and the staff gracious, skilled and friendly. Thank you Tamara for catering our party. We and, again, the guests gave you and your team heartfelt compliments. P.S. Thank you for leaving the place so clean - our host appreciated it! I highly recommend Tamara and Amoraco for anyone reading this post.

For two years in a row, Chef Dan has catered our holiday party and both events have been a huge success with no small thanks to Dan's cooking and his partner in crime, Brianna's bartending. Amazing food, excellent service, outstanding value.

DeCicco's recently catered an office Holiday Breakfast for us. Both Luisa DeCicco and Event Planner, Francesca Sgammato were amazing to work with. They made sure we had all we wanted (and more), worked through numerous menu changes and kept us within our budget. The food was abundant and delicious and delivered hot and on time. We will definitely use DeCicco's again.

Joe catered a party for 65 people. He delivered the food to downtown Manhattan. He was friendly and efficient in explaining to me how to cater the food. He personally delivered the food - on time - and the food received many great reviews. The party was a success and Thumbtack was a life saver when I couldn't find a caterer. Thank you for helping to make our annual holiday party a success.

Chef Martin, his delicious food, warm disposition, meticulous attention to detail and easygoing charm were probably the best part of our wedding day. Right from the start we knew he would make our day perfect in every way. He immediately understood our needs, helped us find the best solutions and always had a positive attitude and a jovial ease. The food was perfect and his staff was lovely and professional. We'd love to work with him again some time soon and are pleased to recommend him for any of your event/party catering needs.

My husband and I hosted an intimate birthday dinner party for our daughter, her boyfriend and guest visiting from Belgium and a couple of close friends. Each of them enjoyed the salmon and lamb chops, the presentation of the appetizers and salad was great. We had a great experience with Chef Aless. We would definitely consider her again for future events. Leila and Gerhard Mueller

As someone who is obsessed with food, I know good from mediocre, and mediocre from just plain bad. I am also someone has ZERO capacity to cook for more than, like, 1-2 people at a time…tops 4….but I happen to have a big extended family and group of friends that LOVES to entertain and BE entertained. So, on one hand it’s great because it gives me LOTS of excuses to eat wonderful food to my heart’s content (yay cheat days!); on the other hand, I have panic attacks just THINKING about preparing for one of these parties in terms of planning menus, figuring out what and how much stuff to make, shopping, prepping, cooking, cleaning, etc My heart is actually starting to race right now just WRITING about it!!! However, about 7 years ago, I found my secret weapon. I was at an event my old job was hosting, and the food was AMAZING and so creative and delicious. The theme was gourmet comfort food, and I’ll never forget it because I LOVE comfort food, and the dishes they served at the event were such cool, delicious, creative versions of some of my favorites. I was in the restroom at some point fixing my make-up, and a Chef Alana happened to be at the sink as well. We just started chatting and I liked her instantly. She has such a great energy that you will notice right away when you meet her (and you SHOULD meet her!) As it happened, I was in the beginning stages of planning a holiday party with my sister, and we were tying to decide what to do about food. When I mentioned this to Chef Alana, she immediately threw like 3 great potential ideas at me!!! We exchanged info and I contacted her the next day. We talked about the details of the party, the types of guests they would be there, particular tastes, requirements, special dietary needs of some of the guests, etc. and she said she'd whip up a proposal and get back to me. Two days later she sent me an EPIC menu, layout of how she and her staff would work, breakdown of her price and some great tips as well! I hired her the second I was finished reading....and the rest is history. Chef Alana and her staff have done every single event I have ever needed catered, since then, as well as many for people I have referred her to. On a totally opposite note from being an obsessed foodie and big entertainer/entertainee, I happen to also be a former figure competitor (a category in the bodybuilding world). Now, while I don’t seek out the healthiest dishes when planning a party or family gathering, Chef Alana’s food almost always can be considered “healthy” in that she only uses the freshest ingredients and every single element of every dish is homemade. She skimps on NOTHING in terms of quality, freshness and authenticity. But I digress. The real point I was about to make is that for the two years I was competing, I hired Chef Alana to do all of my meal prepping and delivery. We thoroughly discussed my needs and preferences — which were VERY picky and obnoxious — and she NAILED it every single week. The amount of time and frustration she saved me during that already-stressful time was PRICELESS. I refer all of my friends and family to Chef Alana and her Most Wanted Chef staff any chance I get. She is that good. I actually hate making recommendations to people on services and products, etc. in case things don’t go well and then I’d feel responsible. In all honesty, though, I NEVER hesitate to recommend Chef Alana/Most Wanted Chef, and I will continue to tout her services and UTILIZE her services every chance I get. Do yourself a favor if you have ANY need for a caterer or a private chef - reach out to Chef Alana, be prepared to be blown away, and see why she really is the Most Wanted Chef.

T&C catering were everything I had hoped they would be. They were professional, fun, and the food was great. Carol was very easy to get in touch with, and provided valuable recommendations for our holiday party of 50+ people. They arrived on time, and set up quickly. They even brought containers so people could take food home. Additionally, they helped cut/serve our dessert, even though we got it from somewhere else. I would highly recommend T&C catering to anyone, and will definitely use them again in the future.

JP catered a party for us of about 40 adults and 20 kids and we had a great experience working with him - highly recommend his services! He was responsive and flexible during the planning phase, able to modify his gameplan day-of when our rooftop venue got rained out :( and prepped and served the food efficiently, beautifully and notably, without needing anything from us as hosts, letting us truly enjoy the party. On top of all that, all the guests loved the food itself and several have inquired about contacting JP for their own events. I’m happy to make those connections because JP is truly a great chef and a consummate professional!

If you are skeptical about who to hire for your dinner party or other event, I absolutely recommend you hire Chef Jeffrey. You will NOT go wrong. He was extremely responsive, helpful and friendly and the menu was out of this world. Every bit of the food he prepared was fantastic! This was my first time using him and my girlfriend and I cannot stop talking about the evening. We will absolutely be planning another dinner. Thank you, Jeffrey!!!

I threw a catered birthday party, and upon signing up with Thumbtack, Brooklyn Kitchen got back to me in the hour. Throughout the entire process, their responsiveness was always immediate and thorough, anytime I had a question, and we were even able to set up a call to discuss the catering. The food was delivered promptly and ready to present/serve, friends raved about the wings at the party and the NEXT DAY. Highly recommend.

Renee was responsive and professional from our first contact. She provided a very competent server for our party and did not require a minimum number of hours of work. We were able to be flexible and determine how many hours we needed help at the time of the party. Very satisfied!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
