I have been working with Jim on preparing for the SAT and ACT tests since August 2013. For the first couple of months, Jim and I had our sessions on the Upper West Side. As I have to take the GW Bridge to get to Manhattan, I sometimes ran into traffic related problems that prevented me from getting to the city on time to meet him. Jim was very understanding of this, and suggested that we have our lessons on Skype instead. He is very flexible as far as scheduling, which is very convenient for a Junior with a hectic schedule. After taking a practice test, Jim and I went over the questions that I missed. I read the questions out loud because he did not have a copy of the test booklet. I actually wasn't surprised that he was able to tell me all of the correct answers because he has been teaching me all kinds of fool-proof strategies to find the right answer. Jim has helped me raise my composite ACT score by 7 points. Additionally, he has been helping me tremendously throughout this college process. Overall, Jim is a pleasure to work with as he is honest, smart, and encouraging.

Robert is a great Italian instructor! I have studied Italian previously, but it has been many years - he has been very patient with me as I struggle through it again. And, he is very flexible with scheduling, which I appreciate greatly due to my crazy schedule. I would recommend him highly as an Italian instructor! All classes are a great combination of conversation, grammar, and reading/translation.

Meena tutored my 7 year old son for over a year. Meena was able to create a program that suited my sons learning curve. First, she was able to improve his handwriting skills to the point that the teacher gave him and excellent. Then they tackled spelling, starting from smaller to much more complex words. I was so impressed with the complexity of words my son was able to read and spell. His reading level increased by a grade. Finally, we moved on to reading comprehension. Meena provided reasonable amount of homework between their sessions and was flexible and dependable.

Jim did a terrific job preparing my graduating daughter for the ACT. They focused on improving her math and writing skills, and over the course of 6 weeks, her practice scores improved markedly. Her final ACT score of 32 is a testament to Jim's teaching abilities. Thanks for all your help. James

Reading faster and improving my reading comprehension is important to me. I took Executive Mind's Speed Reading Program and learned so many ways to improve both. Katya Seberson is extremely passionate and knowledgeable on her topic and made it so easy and fun. I especially loved how I read twice as fast and have some very valuable tools that will enable to me to continue my journey to better reading. I would recommend Executive Mind’s programs to anyone who reads and learns.

Mr. Connor has been working with my children the last two years. He is an amazing teacher who is very patient and kind to my children. He is teaching them Chinese, singing, drum and guitar. Unlike other teacher we had in the past, Mr. Connor incorporate games and songs into all his lessons which makes language learning much more interest. My children adores Mr. Connor and looking forward to work with him every time.

I had Nataliya for SAT tutoring and I was very pleased with the way she taught the material. She made things simple to understand and always made sure that the problems were fully understood before moving on. Nataliya teaches in a manner that is fun and relatable. After just a few SAT practices and tutoring sessions I began to see improvement in my Math and Critical Reading. She even helps with the college application process so that it's less stressful than it already is. I highly recommend this tutor!

I highly recommend Marisa as a tutor. She has helped both of my sons (11 and 14) tremendously. Not only does she gauge their needs perfectly, she also provides exemplary descriptions of those needs (for you) and how she will address them. And her plan is always amazing and spot on. From reading comprehension to writing, Marisa has a knack for bringing out the best work in a child and inspiring him to work harder and smarter. She addresses macro issues as well as nuances, and inspires the kids she tutors to want to do more. It's nothing short of a miracle. And the boys LOVE working with her. If you're looking for someone to help your child, Marisa is the best.

Mr. Michael is an excellent tutor. He puts his students first and has been very compassionate towards me during the time he conducted lessons with me. He never made money his priority. Whenever we had lessons, he would always be prepared and bring enough material that would carry me throughout the week. I am extremely grateful for his service and I would recommend him to anyone who is looking for an excellent tutor.

Margaret tutored me for the SAT and I can definitely say that without her help I would not have been able to make such a significant improvement. She gives many tips and methods on how to go about solving trouble spots, but most importantly she gives methods of improvement based on your strengths and weaknesses, not generalized tips. This really helped me improve the Writing and Critical reading portions of the SAT. Overall, Margaret is very kind and helpful, and I am sure she will exceed you expectations in whatever academic field you are recieving aid/coaching in.

Carolyn Steinhoff has been my editor and proofreader for years, ever since she published a story of mine in a magazine she published. I send every piece of writing I do to her first--letters, stories, screenplays. She perceives my intentions, sees astutely how I can better realize them, makes suggestions that almost always improve my writing, and proofreads with an eagle eye to correct all aspects of grammar, spelling and punctuation. She also tutored my son when he was in high school, helping him with writing essays, reading and understanding the books he had to read and write about, helping him earn good grades. I recommend her most highly for any job relating to editing, proofreading, and reading and writing tutoring. You could not find a better, more expert person.

I love the Italian language and culture and realized my speaking abilities from my university studies were rustier than I thought during a recent trip to Italy this past summer. Upon my return to the States, I immediately sought private tutoring and I could not be more satisfied in finding Mariateresa. I've seen vast improvement in my comprehension and speaking since I started taking lessons with her. The first couple months were focused on fundamentals and book work but now each lesson begins with about 30 mins of conversation (in Italian of course) before diving into books. I cannot recommend Mariateresa enough regardless of your comprehension level because not only does she challenge me every week to improve my skill but the time spent with her is very enjoyable and something I look forward to every week.

Femi Lewis did edits for my full length novel, which were complex because it was written in a southern voice. Femi Lewis rose to the task...She dug right in to the voice, timeline and flow of the novel. If authenticity and superior work is what you're looking for Lewis is it. My novel wasn't complete without her knowledge and structuring techniques. She is a master of punctuation and getting me to say, show and tell my story to my readers. I should have found Ms. Lewis many drafts ago! My novel is "Weaver" and thanks to her work, it's a great read.

Every session is fun, rigorous, and leaves me feeling like I've made progress even after just 90 minutes. Muchas gracias Felipe!

        Lucy the Literacy Lady

        New To Thumbtack

          About

I provide multisensory literacy interventions for children and adults who struggle with reading and/or writing. The list below is not exhaustive, but gives an idea of the different needs of many of the learners I help. * Language-based learning disabilities such as dyslexia * Struggling readers and total non-readers * Poor handwriting – print and/or cursive * ADHD – difficulty with organization and study skills * English language learners * Expository writing I offer the following: * Consultation The initial phone consultation takes about 15 minutes. It is an opportunity for me to understand your needs (or your child’s needs) and for you to ask questions about working with me. If you decide to proceed, the next step is an evaluation. You can click on the link in the sidebar to schedule a consultation. * Evaluation Using various appropriate assessment tools, I can provide an in-depth evaluation of language and literacy skills, and provide a written report. The assessment will be followed up by an in-office, phone or video-conference meeting to review the evaluation. * Individualized Learning Plan Since everyone has different needs and goals, I tailor your learning experience to meet your needs. I use a diagnostic-prescriptive approach to facilitate learning, often incorporating tools and materials from different sources. To accommodate even the most reluctant learner with the busiest schedule, I can offer learning sessions via video-conferencing, depending on the learner’s needs and comfort with using technology. * Intervention Sessions will reflect the individual learner’s learning style and goals. Some of the specific areas I target are phonemic awareness, decoding and encoding, vocabulary through morphology, comprehension, pronunciation, handwriting, and written composition. * Follow-Up Along the journey, we will be assessing your progress. Parents and adult learners can schedule periodic check-up sessions and also receive reports to outline and chart goals.
