Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

Working with Muniz Tile and Atila was a wonderful experience. I had a small job, tiling a 29 square foot kitchen back splash with glass tile. Atila gave me an extremely reasonable and fair quote and was flexible to book the job around my work schedule. He came on a Saturday and was able to completed the job quickly, efficiently and with quality craftsmanship. I was given 3 day estimates by others, and he was able to do the job within 7 hours. He was organized, respectful and left the area very clean. I am very happy with the job that was done. He exceeded my expectations and would most definitely hire him again for any future tile work.

Ive worked with many contractors over the past year, and he is by far the cleanest, he also paid the most attention to detail which was very critical on this backsplash. See my pictures. He also made NO mess in my apartment even though he had to use a wetsaw, I was shocked. He set up an entire enclosure! Its like he was never there. The tile work he did was perfect, he organized all the tiles in a pattern first on his tarps first before even starting to cut to make sure it would come out perfectly, inspecting every tile to make sure none had cracks/chips etc.

Ozzie ( the owner ) is awesome. He saved my kitchen!!! My kitchen floor was left in an undesirable condition from the previous contractors. Ozzie and his worker re-laid the tiles and made them beautiful. I'm very happy with the work that was performed in my condo. They are very professional, punctual, hard-working, I can't say enough great things about them. I'll definitely be calling Ozzie and his team for future home improvement projects!!! :)

If I could give 7 stars I would to Muniz Tile. From his quick response to his fair estimate and excellent work, 5 doesn't feel enough. He came despite the Covid pandemic and he showed up with gloves and a mask. He followed all the social distancing norms we are now living. He started the work as scheduled and do so quickly but with great professionalism. I am very happy with the results and I look forward to working with him again.

I could not be happier with Xavier’s work. He installed a backsplash for me in my kitchen. He was extremely prompt to respond to any questions I had and made an appointment to come and check out my place the next day. He fit me into his schedule and was accommodating of all my needs. His tile work was exactly what I was looking for, see attached photos. His quote was fair, reasonable and significantly lower than any others I was getting. In addition he fully cleaned my place once the project was complete, you would never know he was here. Highly recommend!

PRIME Cleaning & Construction was a breath of fresh air after the nightmare my husband and I have experienced with our previous general contractor. I'll spare you the details of that horrific situation, but know that it left us both feeling skeptical about trusting anyone else in our home. Michael put us at ease immediately. He quickly responded to my request for an estimate, made time to come out to my house almost immediately, quoted us a fair price for the work, and got started right after the new year. The tiling and shelves look incredible! I could not be happier with the work they did. They have restored (a little bit) of our faith in home renovation professionals. Do not hesitate to hire Michael and his team. You'll be so happy with the results!!
