I was moving my single bedroom out of my old apartment (a 3br I shared with roommates) into a 2br close by in Brooklyn, and I have nothing but good things to say about the movers. They were friendly, funny, professional and got the job done quickly and with a smile. It was my first time moving and I’m glad it was with Dyno, everything was simple and easy. It was also pretty impressive to see one of the giant men carrying my entire dresser on his back up 3 flights of stairs. There was no weirdness about the tip (which is apparently a common issue during moves in NYC), I was told that 15-20% of the total should be given to each guy, and that worked out perfectly — in no way did I ever feel that they didn’t deserve that tip. A+ from me.

Our recent move with Seka Movers from New York to Queens was exceptionally good. We’ve moved over 15 times, so we’ve had our share of good moves and bad moves, but Seka and our moving crew of Sam, Dima, and Alexey were amazing. They covered the front door and carefully wrapped each piece of furniture before loading it into the truck. They worked steadily and quickly, but carefully. When we got to our destination, they placed each piece of furniture where we asked, and at the end of the day, they suggested we go through the whole house and they offered to move anything from where we’d initially told them to a different spot.  Then, when we got ready to pay, Sam said we owed LESS than the original estimate. We’re frequently paid other movers more than the estimate, but never less. We encourage you to call Saka Movers for an estimate before you make a move. Awesome!!!

The guys were professional and polite, even offering advice on furniture placement! Their friendliness and enthusiasm made the move so much more enjoyable. Our only complaint is that the team could not come on our scheduled day, which left us in a bind. They quickly called once they knew they'd be late and rescheduled for the next day. Luckily our move was very local so we could be flexible. Once they finally arrived Movers for a Cause were nothing short of excellent. Wish we could give them 4.5 stars.

Re: Move on April 21st 2011 Kudos to the team that helped facilitate moving my mother-in-law's possessions from her home in Rosedale, NY to a storage facility in Brooklyn. Moving is a traumatic experience but the team assigned to assist her was courteous and extremely professional. I researched several companies (spoke to friends, checked the BBB, Yelp and several other sources) and the flat price quoted by David was the least expensive. David ( Fair Price Movers contact) responded to my numerous emails and phone calls. He was always polite and supportive when it came to my detailed questions. Even when I requested a copy of the company's insurance, which he did not have readily available he was honest in telling me that the owner was still working to obtain the proper documents. I liked his honesty and trusted my gut. The move was completed within 5 hours and was done to my mother-in-law's satisfaction. I visited the facility over the weekend and the team packed the items neatly into the space. This is a young company with tremendous potential for growth. I will be using this company in the near future. Moving made easier should be Fair Price Movers tag line. Thank you David and your excellent staff for a job well done!

We had a move from both a storage unit and a (walkup) apartment to a final (elevator) apartment. They had already done two moves, but arrived very close to the scheduled start time. It took a little longer than I'd hoped, but the stairs slowed the team down (they were working hard though). CCS's movers were very careful with all of our things--much more careful than most other movers I've had in fact. So if that is a priority, I'd definitely go with them. Jafari and Sam were especially hardworking. A heads up, there's an extra fee to pay by credit card ($30), which wasn't clear from the beginning.

Dariusz and his team did a great job helping us to move our 1-bedroom apartment from Stamford to Jersey City . They were very careful with all packages and furniture and worked hard till everything was placed and assembled in the new apartment. They were very polite, friendly, responsible and diligent. We will definitely hire them again and we can recommend them to everyone who cares for a good service.

Jeff and his crew were fantastic to work with. They were on time for the pickup and packed the baby grand piano with complete care. They also set up the piano with efficiency and care. They left everything clean and had the piano moved in 3hrs. All of the movers were polite and friendly. The price was reasonable.

The best moving experience ever, period! We moved from Jersey City to Washington Heights, NY. Mitko came over to give an honest estimate a week before. We got several estimates from different movers, none of them came to see our stuff, their estimates were lower but from the multiple previous moves experience (my husband and I moved about 8 times in the last 8 years) I know that the lower estimates always cost us more in the end when they tell you you got more stuff than they expected. You really get what you paid for. With Blue we got a fair estimate of $700 for a one bedroom apartment with unlimited hours and everything included. These people are extremely professional, thorough, neat and fast, and very honest. They handled our furniture with care, wrapped everything professionally and did all very fast. If we move again we'll only go with these guys! Thank you Mitko and the crew, you're the best!

These movers were just the best. Ivo and Nick moved my entire apartment from Manhattan to Brooklyn and made it look easy. All I had to do was stay out of their way! They were well prepared with a big truck and had moving supplies on hand. They were very nice to work with. Will hire the next time I move.

Bluebell service and movers were excellent, to say the least. The movers handled my furniture and items with extreme caution and care. Just about EVERYTHING was bubble wrapped. The only downside is the increased cost after the estimate for items over 40. Becareful of extra added costs for stairs over 12. PLEASE make an attempt to get rid of items you no longer need or use, to cut down on the cost of packing. ALL-IN-ALL, they were excellent and professional. I would use them again on my next move.

When other movers completely failed to show up, Brig and his team were willing to come in on the double and kept me from a bad situation. They're people-oriented people with truly exceptional customer service ability, and they worked fast and reliably to move even heavy and awkward items undamaged across town. My fragile electronic equipment, too. Every step of the way, I felt as if my things were in good hands. I can't say enough positive about this company; they're simply the best movers I've worked with and I'll seek them out when I have to move in the boroughs again.

They sent 4 men to do the job and everyone of them were friendly, courteous and efficient. They handled all of my stuff and packed and taped my furniture with care. I have already recommended them to my brother who is moving next month. I don't usually give recommendations but they deserve it. One of the movers gave us a little "concert" on my piano after they were done and we thought he was awesome. Highly recommend!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
