I have Shanna editing a manuscript for me. She was very responsive to me needs and did the editing quickly and efficiently. I am in San Diego and we were able to communicate quite well using the internet and telephones. I have never met Shanna (though I hope to some day) but I feel like we are old friends.

Ms. Levie has assisted me over the past three years on a variety of academic and professional documents (e.g. grant proposals, personal statements, project plans, professional memos) and have been consistently impressed with her writing and editing skills. Receiving meaningful and timely feedback at the Ph.D. level can be difficult yet I have found Marie is ideal for this work. She does not try to revise high-level theory but focuses on ensuring grammar, clarity, conciseness and overall flow and logic. Her ability to edit documents with a keen eye for eliminating redundancies, making language active rather than passive, as well as inserting clarifying statements, when needed, has elevated the quality and impact of my various proposals and documents. Her work has been crucial in ensuring that several projects ascend the approval chain swiftly. From a personal perspective, Ms. Levie is friendly and easy to work with. It is a relief to work with someone who is extremely reliable, timely, and professional in meeting deadlines and asks the right questions in order to edit /create meaningful and relevant documents. I would unequivocally recommend her services. -Jessica Solyom, PhD, Arizona State University

September 29, 2015 To Whom it May Concern: I have had the opportunity to work with Devon Jackson on numerous occasions. First when we worked together at the Santa Fean Magazine. He was our editor; I was an account executive. I was enthralled and impressed with his writing style covering art, architecture and lifestyle stories. When he began his free lancing career, we connected again. And I was just beginning my new journey in the Tour Guiding business as owner/founder of Cultural Treasures, LLC. He interviewed me for a blog he was writing at the time. A condensed version of that interview is on my web site at under the heading “About the Proprietor”. As I said on my site, he captured my essence unlike any one I have ever known. And in just a one hour meeting over a cup of coffee at Starbucks. He is a brilliant writer, interviewer and an accomplished wordsmith. I look forward to any article he has published that he shares with me because I always learn new words! That to me is a true gift. He not only knows them, he uses them with great aplomb. Devon Jackson would be an excellent addition to your staff of free lance writers. Very truly yours, Robbie O’Neill Cultural Treasures, LLC (505) 231-0855

I called Mark when I was in a pinch to get my studio set up for filming an online course. I thought I could do it on my own but it was proving to be more challenging than I realized. I called Mark and within 90 minutes he was at my house. Then 30 minutes later he had everything set up making the videos look amazing! He also gave me some great tips on editing my videos. And now I'm working with him to make an intro video for my course (I already love the samples he's sent me). Mark is professional, knowledgeable, dependable, fast and very reasonably priced. Mark is definitely going to be one of my partners going forward.

Jana has helped me with many writing projects over the last seven years. She has proofread writing projects for me, line edited my writing and also helped me find the “big picture” or core of projects. She has advised me on website content and appropriate biography material. She has proofread and edited blog posts for me and suggested content and layout changes to my business and writing websites. She also edited my memoir, helping me pull all the pieces together. I highly recommend Jana for any writing-related, web marketing or content projects. She is professional, practical, kind and has a knack for helping her clients discover what they really want to say.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

    • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
    • Strong writing skills.
    • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
    • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
    • Expertise in your target area.
    • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

    • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
    • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
