I started using Pamela's services about 8 years ago. I own several rental/vacation properties in town. She has stripped and restained cabinets, chose paint colors and then painted (all four of the interiors of my houses, & exterior of my 2 story 3000 SF house), chose wallpaper, granite, flooring, hardware, fixtures, drawn remodel plans, oversaw all plumbing & electrical work, & worked with my contractor for larger projects. She personally tiled my kitchen counters with Galaxy granite and refaced my fireplace to match. She also installed a glass backsplash, & gave my kitchen the wow it needed on a tight budget! I have been impressed with her hands on capabilities and knowledge. Pamela has a keen eye for picking colors, flooring, hardware, counters, styles, etc. Her ability to understand what people want is uncanny: She can see the forest through the trees. She can design a space that not only keeps pace with current style trends but keep it unique enough to not just be another carbon-copy. My last property took the cake. She fully furnished my entire 4 bedroom vacation rental including all linens, kitchen appliances, cooking supplies., beds, furniture, and all items needed to be a fully functional vacation rental & staged everything by herself. It bears mentioning that I give her a very tight and strict budget, and she always finds a way to make everything look expensive & sticks to the budget I've set. I never have to lift a finger when I hire Pamela. This last job she did prompted me to write about my experiences the past eight years (& seeing some pictures on her profile of work she's done for me throughout the years). My guests always comment on the house and I can only say "thank you, Pamela did it" She has great vision, work ethic, and will treat you right. I recommend her services fully.

We had Robert do a whole house remodel. M&R services repaired Sheetrock damage in the home, painted the ceilings, walls, closet, garage. They installed baseboards, hardwood flooring (not laminate,) tile floors in the kitchen and bathrooms, and carpeting in the bedrooms. They also did an epoxy flooring in the garage. An extended set of double crown molding was installed. Six ceiling fans were installed and light fixtures throughout the house were updated. An evaporative cooling unit was installed in the garage. Kitchen cabinets were replaced with lights mounted underneath. I love the way the work was completed. Robert and his crew were polite and helpful in explaining the process. They were always on the  lookout for small things which can hold up the process. I will utilize Robert and his crew on my next home project.

So far so good. Very easy to talk to/work with. It seems like she can cater to anyone's needs. I just started working with her so I will post an update as our project comes to an end but compared to 2 other designers I talked to, she is the best fit for my needs.

My husband and i hired Sue Ellen designs to decorate and style our new house. I still pinch myself every time i walk in and can’t believe this is our home. We changed our direction from our last home and went from warm, bamboo and color to cool, sophisticated, and sleek. They worked our favorite artwork and pieces from our other home into this one. What i have learned from sue and rob through the years is that if you buy the pieces you love and want to keep them, they will work it in somehow, someway, and it just works! They both have an eye for color, texture, fabrics, and style which cannot be beat... they sent us out for the day, had our furniture delivered, they put pictures in picture frames, nuts in the candy dishes, and flowers in the vases. They pulled it together like extreme home makeover even though we knew what they had ordered but couldn’t even visualize the beauty of everything together. We love our new home and would highly recommend them! Barbra Jo B

I've waited forever for this kitchen. From my back-splash that reaches around to my fully tiled washing machine area to my drop down TV, I finally have a kitchen that is completely functional. My kitchen is small (200 sq ft) but Karl's space planning allowed me a bar area, 42 cabinets including 5 pan drawers, an island and every lighting option I asked for. Pendant lights, Gimble dimmer spotlights, track lights and under cabinet lighting showcase my favorite room in the house. Keeping to my color palette and stainless steel appliances, the grays and whites look amazing against my N'Orleans custom made back splash accent tiles and my gorgeous Kraus sink. Working with Karl on design and budget was perfect. He's transparent and oversees EVERY contractor to EVERY last detail. Beautifully professional and on time. He really took all the hassle out of this project for me. Thanks for my European style dream kitchen! Highly recommended.

Frank gave me a fair quote on installing tile in my kitchen. I was impressed with his quality of work and contracted him to completely gut & remodel my 20 year old bathroom. The demolition consisted of 3 nasty layers of linoleum, removing fiberglass tub/shower and removing tiolet. After six previous bids/quotes that were outrageous and expected 50% down before even beginning any work, I'm glad I chose Hansen Construction, for the following reasons: Was on time & worked full days Kept work area clean & protected carpet & surroundings Did not waste expensive materials Gave excellent decorative concepts & ideas Flexible & patient the couple of times the plan changed Picked up & delivered heavy supplies Completed pedestal sink, tiolet, bathtub plumbing, drywall, detailed tile & mosiac pieces, light install & painted. My remodel turned out to be more than I expected. Hire with Confidence!!!

Amazing designs and well rounded, experienced designer. Its obvious the knowledge and experience that Ozzy has. He worked patiently with us on our remodel and guided us from beginning to end with the expertise needed to execute this project properly. From the finishes to the exterior, everything is exactly what we imagined. While remodeling a home is challenging, we are glad to have had the help and guidance we had to make our expectations a reality!

I have worked in commercial design and custom home design and taught for brands such as La-Z-Boy, Macy's and Ethan Allen. My taste in the finished product of any project is "what the customer's taste is" and not what I personally like. My favorite project is my next.

I am a CAD design engineer with extensive experience in the mechanical plumbing and electrical disciplines during my time working for employers such as Quality Mechanical, Harris Engineers, JBA and Canyon Electric. I have 15 years' experience in the contracting and consulting industries; thus, I am confident that I have the skill and ability required for the position you are seeking to fill. From my experience, I was able to develop skills in drafting and design, giving me the ability to generate fully coordinated 3D drawings for not only mechanical, plumbing, and electrical but also for structural, architectural and civil disciplines. My skills in 3D modeling give me the ability to not only design and draft concise and fully coordinated plans, but I'm also simultaneously generating models for plans, sections, elevations, details, 3D isometrics, shop drawings and spool sheets. I'm not however limited to 3D drafting; I'm skilled in generating all plans found in a contract document or a design-build type of submittal, such as a sheet index, code analysis, sheet specifications, schedules, diagrams, etc. I'm skilled in performing calculations, such as heat load, using Trane's Trace 700, elite's CHVAC including the drawing board utility, wet- and dry-side pressure-drop calculations, mixed air temperature, etc. I have skills in plumbing calculations, such as adding fixture units for sizing waste and vent, hot and cold water and gas piping. My skills include calculations for electrical such as load calculations, voltage-drop and balancing phases. Furthermore, as a result of having worked in the construction industry for over 15 years, I have developed an understanding of the process and flow of information required to complete a wide range of projects. I have the ability to complete tasks all the way from architectural concept through preliminary design, building department submission, working with plan checkers to ensure that the project is up to code and will be permitted. I make it a point to visit the jobsite frequently, verifying the project is per plan and will pass inspection. Working with contractors to answer their requests for information both in writing and sketches, I have skills in project management, facilitating the smooth and efficient progression of the project. Finally, I do a complete walk-through and checklists working with commissioners guaranteeing that the owner will receive their cert. of occupancy in a timely manner to begin operations as soon as possible. I feel that my 3D CAD design engineering experience would be an asset in this role. All I ask is the opportunity to show you what I can do; I promise you will not be disappointed. Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope to have the opportunity to discuss the opening with you in person.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
