san f says, "I liked working w/ Jason and I believe you would too. Let me explain - I say work with since I asked Jason to help complete an installation that my son in law (an electrician) and I began a mini-split a/c system. I didnt feel comfortable finalizing the pressure testing/system evacuation and had trouble finding someone who would work with us. I found Jason through Angies List (or whatever the current name is) and he said hed be willing to come in and do this segment of the job. (While Jason explained that he does install mini-splits I had not heard of his company before.)He showed up on time, was thorough, had the latest equipment (per my internet education) was friendly and covered all the bases of not only this segment (ensuring there was no leaks in the system by pressure testing and then system evacuation and release of the refrigerant) but he stuck around and tested the system out with me. (Its alive! I pronounced.)We had verbally agreed upon a price and that is what was paid at the end. While we were waiting for the tests to finish, we talked about approaches other companies take with their customers. I had an experience with a DIFFERENT Las Vegas company. We replaced our units 10 years ago and have only had one significant component fail in 10 years. This OTHER company came in for a fall maintenance and while the tech said he had one concern about one of the 2 a/c units, they and the furnaces were in good shape. His supervisor came in, nit-picked on everything and made a grand prognostication that they would BOTH fail in a year and we should replace both the a/c, the furnaces AND the entire vent system in the house. (I should have asked for lottery numbers.) The fact that his tech had already said the units were in good shape made him look foolish. Needless to say, that when they responded to the Angies inquiry I didnt have them come and give an estimate.Jason agreed that high pressure tactics that try to scare you into buying things you dont need isnt the right way to grow your business. We talked about having to make a cost-effective analysis. If a unit can be repaired and their service life extended before another major cost will likely be incurred then fix the thing. If not, then time to look at alternatives and provide estimates. We agreed that you give the customer what he needs, not just what you want to sell. When I was in retail many years ago in college that is how I treated my customers and they appreciated it.As I said, I think youll like working with Jason and Passionate Cooling. I will look to Passionate Cooling as my new a/c company.BYW If you dont know what a mini-split is Google it highly efficient flexible systems that can provide cooling and heating to one or more rooms. They can augment your existing system or depending on your layout/size could act as a whole house a/c system even with our temperatures. Heating is electric so I would stick w/ a gas furnace for cost efficiency. OK thats my two cents."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the most common type of heating system?

The most common type of home heating system is a forced-air heating and cooling system. This type of heater involves a furnace, which is commonly powered by natural gas, forcing air through a series of ducts that distribute the hot air through different rooms in a house. Furnaces can run on other types of fuel, including electricity, propane and oil. This type of heating system is quite popular because it doubles as a path for air conditioning in the summer.

Why is my air conditioner leaking water?

An air conditioner leaking inside the house is a common problem. It could indicate that the air filter is dirty. Or, one of the following may be the culprit:

  • Clogged condensate drain line
  • Leaky, damaged, cracked or rusted drain pan
  • Dirty or broken coils
  • Frozen evaporator coils
  • Broken condensate pump
  • Not enough refrigerant
  • Disconnected drain line

If your AC is leaking, contact a repair service to find out what the problem is — and how much it will cost to fix it.

What is the most efficient heating system for a house?

Geothermal heating tends to be the most efficient way to heat a house when compared to traditional HVAC systems, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Geothermal heat pumps (also called ground-source heat pumps) transfer energy to and from the ground to supply heat, cool air and hot water.

Note that one of the most important ways to boost efficiency, save electricity and lower your heating bills is to make sure your house is weather-tight and well-insulated.

How much does it cost to install a heating system?

The cost of a heating system depends largely on the type and size of the heating system. For example:

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

Can I install central air myself?

While you may be able to do some preparation work for central air installation, you should hire a licensed contractor to complete the project and handle the air conditioning refrigerants.

Also, unless you have the proper credentials, you risk making common mistakes when installing central air. This may include installing the wrong-size furnace, improperly installing ductwork and exhaust systems, and incorrectly managing drainage.

To ensure your central air is installed correctly, contact the best HVAC pros near you and start getting free estimates today.

Does central air add value to a home?

A central air unit or HVAC system may add value to your home. Or, if you’re in the process of selling your home, it may help you close a sale.

The Remodeling Impact report found that 20% of realtors have suggested that home sellers replace their HVAC before attempting to sell their homes, and 7% said this project did help close a sale.

Talk with an expert to figure out if adding an HVAC system is a good idea for your home. And contact the best HVAC pros near you to get free estimates so you’ll know how much this project will cost you.

Is it worth it to install central air?

Depending on where you live, it might be worth it to install central air. Central air makes your house comfortable on hot summer days. And although it’s hard to predict if adding central air will increase your home’s value, prospective homebuyers will certainly notice if it’s missing.

Another advantage of central air is that it can help dehumidify your home. Not only will it make your home more comfortable and enjoyable, but it can also  help prevent mold from growing or spreading.

Contact the best HVAC contractors near you to learn more about the central air installation process and to start receiving free estimates.

How long does it take to get your ducts cleaned?

The amount of time air duct cleaning takes can depend on how extensive your duct system is, how old your air ducts are, and whether they have ever been cleaned. On average, expect a standard size home (between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet) to take 2-5 hours for one to two technicians to clean. Here are the proper protocol and equipment you should expect from a professional duct cleaning service, as recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency:

  • All doors and access ports opened to ensure the entire duct system is inspected and cleaned.
  • Thorough system inspection prior to cleaning to identify possible asbestos-containing materials. If asbestos is present, specially trained and equipped contractors must do the removal.
  • Use of approved vacuum equipment that exhausts particles outside of your house. If the vacuum exhausts inside your home, it must be HEPA equipment.
  • Furnishings and carpet covered and protected.
  • Soft-bristled brushes only on fiberglass duct board and sheet metal ducts internally lined with fiberglass.
  • Ductwork properly protected.
  • Adherence to guidelines and practices set down by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association.

How long does it take to install a new heating system?

A new heating system generally takes a few days to install. Jobs that require new ductwork will take more time. And switching to a different type of heat fuel — propane, natural gas, oil or electricity — may require longer installation times as well, as they could require routing piping, regulators and other adjustments to your home.
