Livia is truly a professional, fun, and her Italian is impeccable, coupled with an exceptional level of knowledge for the English language, she is a recipe for success. She helped me to prepare for a three week vacation to Italy and her tutoring helped to make the trip one of a lifetime. She gave me confidence in my ability to communicate socially, to get around Italy, dos/don'ts, and help my father during an emergency situation. Her approach is very effective and after the third conversation, we were speaking primarily in Italian. During our conversations she used real life experiences, provided information about Italy, and determined areas of focus, tailoring each lesson accordingly to my needs. She is very patient and a stickler for detail, but provides feedback in a very positive way. Over the course of four months of working with Livia prior to the trip, my Italian grew exponentially with an extensive vocabulary (over 1500 words), ability to know the core verb conjugations/uses, and core sentence construct. During my trip in August, I was put to the test and understood a majority of conversations with the ability to communicate back effectively. She helped me to check off a life long "bucket list" item and she makes learning so enjoyable that I have continued my learning post the trip to Italy. I would strongly recommend Livia for anyone wanting to learn Italian and my continued patronage is a true testament.

Back in 2008 Martha helped us by baby sitting my 4 year old son. I learned that a professional loves what they do. A painter paints, an engineer designs and builds, a doctor maintains and restores health, and a teacher teaches and transfers knowledge. That's what Martha did for our son, all we were looking for was someone to take care of our son while we were at work but we got a teacher as well! Our son is able to speak spanish fluently. Thank you Martha, for your help with our son.

Yesterday I had my first Spanish tutoring session with Barbara, who goes under the name of "Spanish4Kiddos." She was there on time at the appointed site with Spanish lessons prepared for me. She kept us on topic and we were able to accomplish a lot during the two hours. It's my intention to meet with her for two hours each week for the foreseeable future. I think I can raise my level of Spanish with her teaching. Would I recommend her? Certainly! But I'm reminded of a questionnaire I was asked to complete for a piano teacher a few years ago. Under the section labeled "Would you recommend this teacher?" I put no. Asked why? I put "because someone else might get my time." Thanks.

Adriana is by far one of the best Spanish teachers you could ask for. She takes the time to not only teach you the Spanish language, but also to make sure you understand every part of it. Adriana incorporates games and activities in her lessons to make learning fun and enjoyable. I definitely recommend her without hesitation, she takes pride in her language and what she teaches and that is what what a true educator should be.

Carlos did a fine job of tutoring my daughter who was having trouble passing Spanish II in her sophomore year in high school. Carlos identified my daughter's strengths and weaknesses and tailored a plan to get her to achieve and maintain a passing grade, which was my goal for her. We hired Carlos for about 10 one-hour sessions in all and I would say he did a fine job. I recommend Carlos to you if you need help with learning Spanish.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
