Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project(s).

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Does an electrician need to enter my home?

Whether an electrician needs to enter your home depends on the type of work that needs to be completed. Any work on receptacles, lights and more located on the inside or outside of your house will likely require an electrician to enter your home.

Ask electricians in your area to perform a video consultation instead of a traditional walk-through to assess the project. During the consultation, they should be able to tell you if they’ll need to enter your home or not.

Awful customer service, I had to contact R&F several times. First i was told the electrician had an emergency and could not make it on the first day, the second day I called and R&F could not tell me if the electrician would even show up. On the last call i was told he could not make it, so after three days of this process I have to find another electrician. Terrible way to run a business.

Replaced outlet as promised and came on short notice. There was some confusion during the initial call with a tenant not the electrician's fault, it was worked out. The work was done professionally, but it was not inexpensive. I reccomend having a few projects to justify the initial call cost.

I give 10 stars if it allowed. But Thumbtack only allows 5 stars. Jac was very Professional, prompt, polite, smart. I hired Jac from Virginia to take care of my mom's ceiling fan issue in New York. Jac took care of my mom as if I was there with him. He installed a new ceiling fan and sent me a link video in case she had future problems. I was truly please with his service and I would hire him again for any needs. I will recommend this company to anyone needing an electrician. Thank you Jac for everything.

My family and I recently purchased our first home. The home came with no light switches, only a string switch in the middle of the room which was very inconvenient for us and especially my four-year-old. I reached out to a few electrician on thumbtack and Dave was the only person who came in and asked me if we had an attic. He run the wires through my attic to minimize damage in the wall, which saved us on repair costs. Dave did an excellent job in all 4 rooms, we now have fan control light switches. Dave was very reliable and went above and beyond to get the job done. I would recommend Dave to anyone. See you on our next project🙏🏽

Did very poor job, couldn’t identify issue gave a solution which caused me multiple city violations and he did not taken cared that when I asked him to correct the violations. Also the external wiring he he has done very poorly entire fixture came down both in 3rd floor and first floor job he has done. He charged $1850 for sloppy work which I will have to take care again with different Licensed electricians as well as have to work on removing those violations. Ended up a very frustrating situation. Even after multiple calls he came to fix the external wiring fixture in first floor, he came and just did sloppy work again to show and as soon as he leaves the fixture fell apart again.

I can't speak highly enough of Keith Willis. He was amazing. I was really in a jam because of very poor quality work another "electrician" had performed. My kitchen was shorted out and the boxes he put in looked like a bowl of spaghetti-bare splices, unboxed, etc. Keith worked so conscientiously to fix it all, even when it took much longer than expected. All of the boxes were organized pristinely, all the outlets checked, the switches appropriate. He took time to explain the situation to my brother. He followed up with me to ensure we finalized everything correctly. He answered my questions on his own time. It was such a relief to find someone so honest, and so professional. I was really in a tough spot, and he took care of everything.

I just bought my first home. I knew before I moved in that I wanted to do upgrades to the house. A good electrician was on top of my list. I did a thorough web search and came across thumbtack. First, I loved that Richard provided his credentials upfront. Many claim that they are licensed but don’t want to show it. That showed me a lot of professionalism. I had a LONG list. He did high hats in the living room, plus changing receptacles throughout the house, light fixtures/ceiling fans in every room, dimmers where needed. Most impressive was the work he did hiding the cords within the wall. I didn’t want them hanging from the TV when mounted. He did 3 walls in total with minimum to no damage. His expertise shows in his work. Even my contractor was so impressed. Also, he cleans up after himself. When he was done, I barely did any cleaning. He was punctual and fair with price. I’m very meticulous so I was very grateful he had a lot of patience with me. I highly recommend him!!! It’s been a pleasure and a blessing working with Richard.
