What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. This is a total scam rip-off. The initial meeting is not even with an actual trainer but a salesman. He barely gets in the door before he hands you a badly used and abused laminated price sheet. Second sentence out of his mouth was how to buy his protein shakes. Didn't care one bit about what my actual personal training goals were. Despite the name personal trainer, this is a one size fits all training. I specifically stated what areas I will not work and why and he said he would not do that. He said it's total body despite physical limitations due to surgery. I told him to leave.

Andres is an incredible personal fitness trainer who understands the needs of his clients. Throughout my life I've exercised either in the gym or by playing sports (basketball, soccer and tennis) but have not been able to target certain muscle groups that Andres has taught me how to exercise. I enjoyed working out with Zhi. He is clearly extremely knowledgeable about fitness and is good at answering any questions you may have. I was very impressed at his ability to notice my specific weaknesses. He also showed me great workouts to strengthen these areas. After our workouts, I was sore for days - a good workout in my book! Not sure why, but he ghosted me when we still had a session to go, but I assume something came up. While a bit unprofessional, the three other sessions I had, he showed up on time and trained me for a ~40-50 minute session. If you are looking for a personal trainer to train you for a couple sessions and help you identify your body’s weaknesses, Zhi is a helpful personal trainer and nice guy.

Zhi is absolutely incredible!!! I’ve worked with Zhi for ~4 months now (2X per week) and training is my favorite part of the week. He’s helped me build lean muscle incredibly quickly, and I feel great! I’ve seen improvement across the board in my posture, strength, mobility, and stamina. I have been considering personal training for years due to poor form when exercising, muscle imbalances, and to learn how to exercise and eat to maintain weight/muscle. Rachel was the perfect fit for all of my needs and it is clear that I made the right choice working with her. I have been working with Rachel virtually for 7 sessions. Rachel is very descriptive on form and also demonstrates exercises which makes working virtually easy. Rachel is professional and personable. It is clear when working with her that she has a lot of experience in working with people with muscular imbalances and injuries/at risk for injuries. She listens to feedback and modifies exercises at the same time as providing a challenge. She wants me to be knowledgeable of why I am doing things, and she also wants me to do exercises that I enjoy to help make it a habit. Rachel is also affordable but she has high quality work.
