Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.

I've been taking private Spanish lessons with Laura for 3 months and I can't recommend her enough. She is professional, funny and flexible. Our sessions are tailored to my interests, and she truly understands languages and how to teach them effectively. I recently went on a trip to Cuba and could tell a major improvement in my Spanish after only taking lessons with her for a short time. Thank you, Laura :)

Laura is an excellent Spanish teacher! She is always well prepared for our classes and she brings interesting materials for us to go through and learn from. I am at an intermediate level of Spanish and vocabulary is what I have the biggest need in improving, and therefore our classes are mainly about increasing vocabulary. We read different types of text, from news articles to poems, and I feel that is exactly what I need to improve, because I learn such a wide variety of words. Now, after having had four lessons with Laura, I already notice that I have an easier time understanding both spoken and written Spanish, because of the practice I get with Laura, both from our conversations and by learning the unfamiliar words we encounter during each lesson (which are quite a few, the lessons are intense, but definitely worth it!!). What I really like about Laura is how you notice that she is very passionate about Spanish and that she genuinely wants to help you. She is a very motivating teacher because her own interest in learning more and looking up anything she encounters which is not familiar to her, makes me want to learn more as well. (This happens for example when we’re reading from a webpage (in Spanish) about a subject, and then they make a reference to something else, and then we read about that too. She does not derail from Spanish teaching, of course :-) ). Overall it is really fun and helpful to take classes with Laura, she’s a very nice, fun and smart woman and I’m always looking forward to our classes. She’s definitely the best Spanish teacher I’ve had because she helps me in the specific areas I need help with, and I feel that our time spent together is well worth it and that I leave each lesson having learned a lot. I would absolutely recommend Laura to everyone who wants to improve their Spanish!!

I needed to learn Spanish for work, and came to Laura with a very limited background from college. With her help I was able to immediately develop my reading comprehension, speaking, and writing skills. Laura structured and adapted lessons to my specific needs, and meeting with her was never a chore and never felt like “work”. Thanks to Laura I significantly improved my relationships with Spanish speaking clients and coworkers.

Laura is the best Spanish tutor I could have asked for. She takes her time with the lessons and shows careful attention with grammar, pronounciation, and goes above and beyond to make the lessons very interactive and entertaining. Using various techniques from music to poetry to specific situational and cultural references, Laura has also helped me notice my own improvement. She keeps you very motivated to learn and always looking forward to your next lesson!

Gloria is a warm and thoughtful teacher. She has excellent materials but is also willing to customize the lessons to the student's needs. Very professional but also a great sense of humor, and she continues to push me into new Spanish language territory. I've enjoyed working with Gloria!

Laura speaks fluent English without an accent and Spanish with the accent from Spain. Both of these characteristics I find helpful. 1. It is difficult and tiring to speak to someone whose accent in English is hard to understand, and 2. there are differences between European Spanish (Peninsular Spanish) which is Laura’s “ lingua materna” and the Spanish of the Americas. Unless you have plans to be in a particular part of Latin America, I think it is better to learn “castellano”, the Spanish spoken by 99% of the people in Spain. Laura also is fairly fluent in Catalan the second most spoken language in Spain (17%). As well as teaching Spanish, Laura also works translating, proof-reading and copy-editing Spanish to English (and visa versa) for business purposes so that the communications read right, so she not only teaches you to speak Spanish, but to read and write it well. So she is not just someone who speaks both languages, but someone who speaks both with style. Laura is from a middle-class academic family. She is young, cheerful and energetic, pleasant to be around, and very smart. The lessons always take their point of departure from something that interests you, in my case that is bird-watching. So she on her own initiative found and brought to the lessons several articles in El País, the Newspaper from Madrid, that had feature articles about birds. I was surprised to find how much more willing I was to puzzle over translating something in the bird article than some other texts. (Something that Google Translate was unable to do, by the way.) This is just one of the many initiative she has taken to bring Spanish home to me. She always appears with a laptop. She is very adept at finding all sorts of things of interest like derivations or conjugations and other resources. I also find her knowledge of grammar very useful, but I had grammar in junior high school, perhaps it's no longer taught. She is always encouraging and never critical, and surprises me with how accepting she is of my deplorable Spanish. What she does in my lessons suggests that she has done a lot of teaching and understands well the strategies for learning Spanish. It is basically, as I understand it, to start where I am and go in the direction I want to go in. I don’t think you can find a better teacher than Laura. Go for it!

I was in NYC with my husband. While he was working, I took the opportunity to take Spanish lessons. My weakness is in conversation. I had (5) 1.5 hour lessons with Laura and it was great! She got down to business and really focused on the task at hand- she is flexible and accessible. if I could have taken more lessons, I would have! I look forward to working with her again on my next visit! I really appreciated her encouragement, more than anything! Cynthia N.

Laura gave me an excellent background in Spanish before my trip to Spain. She is a lovely and engaging teacher, and very generous with her time. She made good use of a variety of resources and always kept it interesting. I had no idea how much I'd learn in only a few lessons!

Nat was a fantastic Spanish teacher! She broke down each lesson into very specific themes and used them in conversation to help review these themes in context. I looked forwards to our sessions each week. I highly recommend her tutoring services for individuals at all levels. Muchas gracias, Nat!

I was in search of a Spanish teacher for corporate lessons and, little did I know, that I hit the jackpot when I hired Laura. We had little idea of what was required to begin lessons, but Laura was extremely helpful every step of the way. She created detailed lesson plans for our class with various learning levels and gave extra aid to any students that required it. She makes each class interesting, even after a long or difficult work day, Laura's positivity and optimism is infectious and gets students excited to attend her classes. We are all so grateful to have found an incredible teacher like Laura and I couldn't recommend her more highly!!!

Gloria's been very good from the get go, adapting to the attention span of a 4-year-old and engaging him with fun elements in tandem to the lesson plan. Each session shows improvement on both sides: her tailoring the content & games to his interests, and he responding positively and clearly expanding his vocabulary and understanding of Spanish. And so I foresee what ranked "Good" today evolving to "Excellent" in the not-too-distant future.

Laura is an exceptional tutor. She is highly patient and utilizes various learning modalities to help a student absorb and retain the Spanish language. Her methods work on comprehension, reading, writing and speaking. She spends time working on the diction and pronunciation of words. She customizes the lessons to your individual learning needs. Laura is also working on fine tuning some bad habits that I picked up over the years which is helping me re-learn the proper usage of the language. It is a process yet she will make it fun and engaging.

Gloria's method of teaching is both simple and easy to process. She customized her approach specifically to my needs to maximize my take-away. Every week Gloria prepared a slide presentation that was tailored to our lesson, she would then send those slides to me after the class to study and assist in my progression. Gloria met me at work once a week, which for someone who is busy was very convenient. All around I have had a great experience and recommend Gloria for any level of teaching Spanish.
