Prior to putting our home on the market, we needed quite a bit of fix-it work and interior painting in all 11 rooms in our 163-year-old house in Pittsfield. From the moment Jim stepped through the front door, we were impressed not only with his professionalism, but with his taking the time to explain exactly how he would go about each fix-it project. The quote came and was more than fair for the amount of work involved. Jim was thorough and meticulous in the execution of each project and was flexible and accommodating when many of the projects uncovered more work that needed to be done or when we added additional projects. He never lost his sense of humor and he never gave up on us. In one month, he totally transformed our home from tired and worn to fresh and beautiful. He did such an amazing job, that the house sold in just 18 days. Jim's work ethic is remarkable, especially for the Berkshires. We can't think of anyone else we've worked with over the years who would not have abandoned the project at some point along the way. He really pulled through for us when three days before the first open house, he uncovered a soaking wet, rotted sub-floor in one of our bathrooms. He put his head down, worked round the clock to fix it, and installed beautiful new flooring. We are so incredibly grateful to Jim (and Heather, too, who made the house sparkle -- and miraculously got rid of a stubborn bathtub rust ring that had been there for years!) We would hire Precision Home Care in a heartbeat at any time for any project and highly recommend that you do too!!

I am extremely happy with the work done by Brian & Joey. They were so professional and personable! Much of my work was on the roof (and I hate heights!) so I was very appreciative of the time and care they took to do it well and give me advice going forward with maintenance. I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone & will be lining up more work around my house for them in the spring!

Dan Martin completed the following work for my home: new roof and gutters, new front porch, installed new front door and windows and completely remodeled 2 bathrooms including tiling the floors, tiling walk-in shower with glass door and tiling tub surround. The bathrooms were original job and he did such a great job, we had and will continue to have him do more work. Dan is meticulous with all his work, very accommodating and the results have been fantastic. I HIGHLY recommend him for any interior or exterior home repairs. And he is very pleasant to everyone!

I had an excellent experience with East Coast Construction. They replaced shingles on my roof after a previous contractor attempted to patch the roof. The estimate was good and did not change, and I no longer have a lake of water in my kitchen. They also returned at a later time to replace a broken window. This home owner is very happy with their work and professionalism.

There were 2 guys in a white van with all the equipment they needed to fix the flashing on the side of my roof. I was scheduled for a Thursday but David asked if it could be done earlier because they had some free time. I just so happened to be available so the work was done a day early :) David was very responsive to emails and phone calls and even informed me of other concerns with the roof that were not dire but something I might look into fixing myself. Will be looking forward to doing business with him again if something else comes up.

August 2017 --Infinite Roofing & Construction is a local company whose owner, John Musto, has over twenty years of experience. He is well organized, knowledgeable, skilled and pleasant to deal with; runs a tight ship and supervises the job. Infinite is available through the entire process to answer any questions or concerns you may have. The time frame was met and the property cleaned up. Price was good. I will hire this company to coat the flat roofs next year and will recommend to family and friends. Dianne

Replaced ancient vent/heater/light in first floor bathroom. Dealt with ancient ductwork, replacing what was needed to make it all work. Previously used them to find and fix a waste pipe leak from the second floor and replace a water damaged section of kitchen flooring. Prices were good and work was high quality.

I hired 4dley Services to do my roof. Our roof was completely destroyed and leaks started forming all over. We needed to get this done ASAP. Nick came out and gave me an estimate the same day and we signed that day and he started a few days after that. He was able to push things around and squeeze us in as this was an emergency. I would recommend him to anyone looking for the services his company offers.

Painted exterior house- 2 unit building- excellent job! Many compliments! All work was timely and quality job with everything- like garage roof repair, and brickwork. This was my first time using thumbtack, and I had a lot of quotes. Jeff was very professional, walked through the scope of work to be done, wrote out a contract and did everything he said he was going to do, very timely, reasonable pricing, reliable crew, and good quality work. I plan to use him again!

Top Care did an excellent job on my roof! From beginning to end, their emphasis on customer service was exceptional. I had three different quotes for the work I was looking to have completed. They were by far the best price and made my decision to move forward with them an easy one! I gave them a pretty tough time line to work with and they assured me that they would do whatever they had to, to get it done; they did, and they did so without wavering on their quality of work. Thank you again Top Care! I will definitely be referring you to anyone I know looking for home improvement work!

I had a great experience with this company. They replied to me within 5 minutes, showed up on time to look at my roof, were very informational, always available to answer my questions and professional. The project was done in a reasonable amount of time and it looks great. All employees were professional and cleaned up all materials before leaving my home. I am very happy with the choice I made and would use them again in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
