Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a plumber during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If possible, it’s best to set up a virtual consultation or phone call with a plumber near during the COVID-19 pandemic. You can send a message to a professional plumber near you and ask if they are available to video chat or have a phone call. Use that time to discuss the work that needs to be done. Make sure to ask any questions you have about the project. And lastly, ask the plumber how they handle payments and whether they have any specific safety precautions in place to comply with social distancing.

How can I find out if a plumber is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Generally, plumbers are often considered essential service providers. Essential service providers vary from state to state and city to city, however. For the most accurate information, check your official state or city government website to see whether a plumber is considered an essential service in your area.

Read CISA’s publication on identifying critical workers to find out more information on a national level. Some, but not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a plumber when social distancing?

Contact plumbers near you beforehand to see if they can complete the project without entering your home — for example, by entering the garage to fix a broken water heater. If the plumber needs to enter your house to do the job, you should proceed only if both parties feel comfortable with the project. Consider taking extra steps such as waving instead of shaking hands, staying 6 feet apart, using digital payments and sanitizing common areas.

Does a plumber need to enter my home?

A plumber will need to enter your home to fix plumbing issues like dripping faucets, clogged sinks or toilets and leaky pipes. They might not need to come into your home if the faulty appliance is located outdoors or in the garage. Before you begin the project, contact plumbers near you to find out they will need to enter your home.

Can I use digital payments to pay for plumbing services?

Some plumbers accept digital payments -- Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, etc. -- for their services. Before you hire a plumber, ask them if they accept your preferred online payment. Many also feature digital payment options on their profiles. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, digital payments are typically considered safer than cash and credit cards.

Do plumbers offer remote or virtual services?

If you see a profile that states the plumber is offering remote services, contact the plumber before hiring them to see what those services include. Although plumbing is a job that has to be done in-person, you can ask them if they offer virtual consultations or an online walk-through.

What do you do if you have a burst pipe?

First, switch off the water supply to reduce the water damage. You should also turn off the electricity for the part of your home that has sustained the leak, as it can be extremely dangerous if the water comes into contact with an electrical socket. Next, drain the remaining water from your faucets so it doesn’t freeze inside the pipes.

Once you’ve done all of this, search for qualified plumbers in your area and ask them to provide you with a quote.

What happens when a water pipe bursts?

When a pipe bursts, the water can cause indoor flooding and damage your home. If the pipe is in an accessible location, you will likely notice puddles of water right away. However, if the pipe is underground or behind a wall, it may cause reduced water pressure, a sulfur smell or discolored water. All of this can cause significant (and expensive) damage, which is why you should always contact a plumber near you if you suspect your pipes are leaking.

Can a leaking pipe burst?

Yes. A leak in your pipe can build up pressure and wear through the material. Left unchecked, this pressure can cause the pipe to burst. This is why it’s so important to fix your pipes and contact a plumber as soon as you notice a leak — no matter how small or insignificant it may seem.

Smaller leaks are easier and inexpensive to fix, saving you time and money in the long run. In addition, many insurance policies will not cover water damage for pipes that burst due to gradual leaks.

What are the signs of a burst pipe?

If your water pressure has suddenly dropped or your sink and toilet have unexpectedly started clogging, you may have a burst pipe. Other tell-tale signs include watermarks on the wall of your bathroom or laundry room, drips or puddles in your home or basement, or water from your faucets that have suddenly turned brown. You may also notice a strange rotten-egg smell or the sound of gurgling water in your home.

If you notice any of these signs, contact a plumber near you to fix your pipes immediately.

We reached out to Top Performance Plumbing for a Spigot install. Ira showed up at our home, looked at the job, provided a price quote and after discussion, accepted the task and began working immediately on the installation. I found Ira to be very pleasant, professional, knowledgeable and thorough in his work. He also expressed good attention to detail. And, although the project appeared challenging due to the construction of the house and where we wanted to place the Spigot, Ira reassured us he could do the job. Honestly, I would happily recommend him as a dedicated, trustworthy and sensibly priced individual/Plumbing service. In today’s competitive market for contractors, I appreciate Ira for taking on tasks ranging from small to large with integrity and reasonable pricing. 5 stars undoubtedly.

Anthony did an absolutely fantastic job and I highly recommend him to anyone looking for an honest great quality plumber who isn't trying to rip you off. He provided amazing customer service even going as far to meet me at the retailer to purchase the new water heater and brought it to my house in his truck. Not to mention he also took away my old water heater and discarded it. He has great knowledge of plumbing and was easily able to solve any issue that came up during the installation. Not mention he came well prepared and had every tool and accessory need to complete the job. I once again strongly recommend him if you need any future plumbing work

Edvinas was great! We had multiple plumbing issues in our home and I was not sure if it could be fixed all at once, but he came early and inspected the issues, and found good solutions to them. He took the time to walk us through what he was going to do before proceeding, and the job was done in a few hours!

Stanley is the greatest person available for any plumbing job. He fixed a horrible situation for me and charged me far less than half of what a major company had quoted. He did the job for an incredible price and in an amazingly short period of time. The man is a saint. I am forever grateful and could not recommend him more. If you need a plumber, hire this man, he is the best.

I would highly, highly recommend Airstream Heating and Cooling, LLC for any plumbing job. I called for a water heater that had suddenly started leaking, and needed to be replaced. When I reached out on Thumbtack, I got a quick response, and a reasonable price. Yan and Wes came out quickly, were knowledgeable and professional, and replaced the water heater in short order. There were additional fixes that needed to be made to bring things up to code - they took care of them with no upcharge, explained everything, and answered all questions. I will definitely use their services again, and suggest anyone reading this does as well.

Mike and an assistant came over to look at the project 6 days ago and said they would get back to me with a price for the work. They were also going to source trench drains and ask a colleague to come up with a price for the tile and glass work. I mentioned that I needed to get the job finished in 8 days and they said it would be tight but they will be able to start on the weekend. The plumbing part is only about 1/2 day of work. That was last weekend and I never heard from them. I had the minor electrical work done while waiting. Also sourced my own trench drain and wanted to send Mike the specks but he didn't give me his email until yesterday. I haven't heard back from him since I sent him the drain specs for his approval so I could place the order. My project should've been completed by tomorrow and now I won't even have it started because I need to find a different plumber. I will definitely keep Gator Sewers on my "do not hire" list.
