Tommy was great, professional, on time, and knew his work. Originally I went with a different contractor to finish my basement and after 3 days, he hadn't done much of anything. I got a hold of Tommy, and he was able to squeeze me in right away and finished the job in less than a week of me calling him! He did the taping of the drywall and the corners. I couldn't be happier with how it turned out! He always wants to make his customers happy and I'll definitely be hiring him again for future projects!

I'll summarize this by saying this was the best experience I have ever had working with a contractor, and Capital Contractors will have my business for any project moving forward. My project was to have a pallet wall installed behind a bar area in my finished basement/man cave. That idea grew to also installing pallet wood around an island, and behind a dart board down there as well. I received several responses over Thumbtack and seriously considered three of the companies. While the estimates were all reasonable, my decision to go with Capital Contractors came down to the obvious pride A.J. McDonald and his partner Kris took in their work. They were passionate and excited as we talked through my vision, and were open completing the job however I wanted. They were true to their word in their attention to detail. Their craftsmanship was second to none, and they left a spotless work area. To top it off A.J. and Kris seem like legitimate and sincere good guys - very likable and trustworthy. Long story short, from the estimate through the completed project, Capital Contractors exceeded my expectations at every turn. I am offering my highest recommendation to family, friends, and anyone reading this. Normally I use Thumbtack to find multiple estimates for a given job, but in this case I found THE company I will be hiring for any project I need done moving forward.

Adam did a great job with my basement renovation. Always kept me notified of what time he was going to be there and showed up at the time he said. My wife went into labor early and had to leave the house while he worked. He is trustworthy and professional. Thanks for the hard work on the egress window.

I just hired Ray Holden at Capital Home Services for the 4th project on my house. Aside from redesigning and finishing a large portion of my basement to create a home office and large kids play room, Ray just put up railings today on my front porch. He always does spectacular work and is excellent with setting expectations and exceeding them. Ray keeps his word and I highly recommend him to anyone. I have also asked him to redesign my kitchen and family room as the next project. Looking forward to it:)

Working with these guys was terrific. They were there on JULY 4 for the estimate (the other guys who were supposed to give me an estimate were no call/no show). The weather was not cooperative, however, my basement entry has been repaired and I have a new set of steps. I would definitely hire these guys again!

Danny and his crew refinished my basement. I was very busy with a new baby and he handled everything. Delivery of materials, making sure he didn't come before 8:30 and wake the baby up, and knowing that I had a newborn upstairs kept any dirt or dust from traveling into our living space. A true professional. That is only one of the projects. I have used him multiple times over the past year. He and his entire crew are true craftsman in every sense of the word.

We have postponed the concrete job. However, we did hire A N D Construction, Jake Tucker, for our shower install and in addition to that he installed a laundry sink in our basement. Jake Tucker did an outstanding job on our shower install. He went over and above and also painted the entire bathroom. The laundry sink project was also very well done and neater than we had anticipated . He was very neat considerate and respectful of our home. I would definitely recommend him and I have recommended him for any of your home remodeling or repair needs. I will be having Jake back to do our concrete job in the very near future.

I hired Full Service Restoration when our upstairs toilet overflowed and our basement was flooded due to plumbing issues that we were not able to address on our own. We called them on a Sunday morning and they were at our house 30 minutes later, fully equipped to start to clean up the water and get to the bottom of the plumbing issue. They were friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. They competently handled every aspect of the job, including the clean up, plumbing, and repair of the damaged walls and ceiling. It was a complicated job that basically involved tree roots invading the plumbing beneath our very old home. They were thorough but efficient, and kept us informed and updated every step of the way. But what really left a lasting impression and prompted me to take the time to write a review was when they called two weeks later to ensure that we were satisfied with the work! I would recommend Full Service Restoration to anyone who needs any kind of home repair or clean up from damage.

Overall great experience with Justin at Sugar Maple. Not only was he right on time as we discussed, he did an outstanding job framing/drywalling/painting our basement. All of this at a great price as compared to the multiple other quotes we received. Would highly recommend and will use again on future projects.

Todd, the owner of All Dry Basement, is professional, prompt, and pleasant. He worked efficiently and came when he said he would. He and his assistant, Josh, are hard workers and did an excellent job waterproofing our basement, including a crawlspace. The attention paid to detail was amazing. Todd is a perfectionist who obviously takes pride in his work. We are very pleased with the outcome. We appreciated Todd taking time to explain things when we asked questions and sharing his ideas on how best to take care of some tricky issues we hadn’t anticipated. Todd knows his business and we highly recommend him.

I could not have asked for more. Dave did outstanding work, has superb skills in everything (carpentry, sheetrock, electrical, various paint jobs), understood the project and what I wanted to do. He provided his own excellent suggestions which I incorporated in the project, was always punctual, meticulous and hard working. The project was a finished basement requiring a drop ceiling, building and placement of walls, electrical work, painting the floor and proofing the area against dust which was a real problem. I very strong recommend him.

Built a wine cellar in our basement, and was flawless with craftmanship. He showed me a portfolio of work he has traveled around the world to do. I was that impressed that I hired him instantly and we're so glad I did.

Joseph recently poured a concrete floor in my basement, in Saratoga Springs. It is a turn of the century home, and he really went beyond my expectations, excavating a large amount of the existing dirt floor, and installing new piers, before pouring the floor. The job was done in a timely manner, and his finished product and clean up were exactly what he promised. I have since recommended Hoe to a number of friends and family, and will continue to do so.

Mike has done a wide variety of work for us over the years, everything from installing French drains and gutters to building kayak racks, staining our log home, exterior repair work, and interior painting and dry walling. Recently, and most impressively, he came to our rescue when we received a call from our security company saying we had a water leak in the basement. Mike went to the house, sucked up 14 gallons of water, cleaned the floor, and created a barrier to prevent any additional water that might come in from damaging a nearby wood floor. Mike stopped in periodically throughout the next week to check for additional leaks. Now that spring has arrived, he will return to repair the causal problem on the exterior of the foundation. We highly recommend the team at Berkshires Finest.

David was great to work with - I would highly recommend him to anyone needing home remodeling or other work done. I was looking to have work done on an older home to get it ready to sell. He replaced a porch wall that had some rotting; sanded and painted basement walls and painted the basement floor; tore out old carpet and put in new carpet where needed; and put in a new bathroom floor. He also did work on the outside of the house. There were other areas he worked on as well. He did great work at a reasonable price and always communicated well with me as to what was going on. Being out of town, I also appreciated Dave helping with things like bringing garbage out to the curb. He was willing to do everything, large or small, and it shows in his final work.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
