Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

I hired this moving company to move a 2 bedroom house 3 miles away. I get this is a busy season but the communication was lacking. I paid a deposit and never got a confirmation in writing of my move. When I pressed them on it I was told they didn’t have a record of my booking (but had my deposit) which is exactly what I was afraid would happen. Communication through the app and texts went unanswered for days. I was given an expired COI and asked for a correction but never got it. The move is stressful enough I didn’t need stress from the moving company so I cancelled my move and booked elsewhere. They are very unorganized and unprofessional. I did however receive a prompt refund, thankfully.

Best moving experience ever! I was a little late and movers were not upset. Very courteous and overly helpful. Most movers would just pick up and drop off- not this company. After assembling furniture, they assisted me in functional layout. My furniture are large Italian-type furniture and everything was moved in 4 hours, plus they assisted me in garbage dumping at my location. I would recommend them to everyone I know because the price is very affordable and service is 100% on point.

Fair Price Movers were extremely professional and efficient. They understood my complicated schedule and was willing to readjust. From beginning to end I felt very comfortable and confident that my move was in good hands. I went based off the reviews I read about Fair Price on Thumbtack as I am a bit apprehensive because I am a new member. Trust me when I tell you these reviews written about the level of expertise and the fairness of the prices is indeed factual. Thank you Fair Price Movers for making my nightmare of a move into a reality I could live through!!!!

We moved furniture from one house to an apartment on the second floor. We needed them next day (Sunday) They were able to move us! I also have to say they had such a great employee named Neftalí (I hope that's how you spell his name) he was professional and ran the project as if he was moving his own furniture. Wonderful doing business with him. Also good communication with main office and driver A+

I’m so happy that I selected Yours Truly Movers for my move of a 2 bedroom 2 level home that we’ve lived in for 15 hrs. First he was very responsive and professional, he was very accommodating and really made me feel relieved to be dealing with this moving company. I added things on several times and it was never a problem. EVERYTHING WAS INCLUDED in their hourly rate including furniture pads and wrapping, tv covers, wardrobe boxes everything! I injured my back preparing for my move and could do nothing but sit and they did everything. Nothing was damaged or missing and the workers were all sweet, hardworking, and worked in harmony together, they never stopped moving. Im so so happy I chose them. It’s a really great company of hard working men who will make sure you get from place to place and will secure and take care of your belongings. I can’t say enough about how happy I am. I highly recommend them and will definitely use them again.

We feel so lucky to have found Kelvin. I have no words to describe how happy we are of our move! He delivers everything he promises, no hidden fees. He will do everything to please a customer. Very satisfied and will hire him again if we need his services.

The workers themselves were capable and hard-working, but miscommunication between the office and movers in the field caused delays and a serious incident following some accidental property damage. The head office needs to make sure the invoice is 100% correct and to customer specifications before sending out the team; in our case, we had requested a 26' truck and stated we had ~80 boxes. The movers had neither of those notes and so they showed up promptly and ready to work, but had to stop the clock after 2 hours and come back 2 hours later with a second truck from HQ to handle all our stuff. The worse incident happened after the driver accidentally ran into the gutter above our garage. I totally understand that accidents happen and don't hold anything against the driver. But rather than agreeing to receive an estimate for the damage and then revise the invoice, the office insisted we pay the full invoice on the spot and that they would "take care of us" later. When we insisted that we needed to get an estimate rather than simply "trust" them, the office said the workers wouldn't leave the property until they were paid. Only after threatening to call the police did the workers leave for the day. All of this could have been easily avoided with a more reasonable and communicative presence at HQ. It was odd to have the office escalate a simple situation about property damage (I get it, it happens and we deal with it) into a big scene over their insistence to get paid "now." Three or four days later we did get an estimate for the gutter, sent it to the movers and had a revised estimate sent over within minutes. That final process was fairly painless, and I still don't understand why the office insisted on "now now now," only to add to the stress of their own workers as well as their customers. Overall it left a very sour taste in our mouths, despite the movers working hard all day.

I needed to move a very large and heavy 3 piece desk from a very small room in my home and have it transported to my job. It required removing the door in the room and 1 molding strip from the door frame. They wrapped each piece carefully and removed the items from the room and the house with care. They disassembled and reassembled with ease and skill. I am very pleased with the end result. I would recommend them to any of my friends and colleagues. I got five quotes from Thumbtack and I chose this company because they were local and had the largest number of positive reviews and were also the most reasonable. **** At the end of the day the most important thing to me is did they do the job I asked of them and did they leave my home and belongings the way they found them-I can confidently say yes on all accounts.
