Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

So incredibly happy with the tile threshold these guys did for me. It was a unique job and they cared just as much about doing it well as I did. Dave went above and beyond with his time to cut the tile and the wood surround to perfection.

Jim responded quickly to my inquiry and was able to complete the job shortly thereafter. He did a great job with my kitchen backsplash and even encouraged me to add the special diamond-shaped tile above my sink that I had been debating. Highly recommend Jim for any tiling needs.

Most of the tile looks good and was done fast. However, they completed the job before telling me that they couldn’t manage the cut the tile for a piece, so they just shoved 3 shards in there. It’s now all I can look at and I’m sad that I spent so much money for something I’m going to have to contact someone else to repair. But they were a good value compared to other installers.

Chris, Josh, and Mel did a phenomenal job on our bathroom tile (floor, shower, and separate tub). Very professional and good men. Would definitely hire again!

Simple tile job gone bad and horrible communication. This should have been a 2 or 3 day max timeline as quoted. We are now on Day 12. I don’t know who is coming or going and I can’t get Steve to return phone calls or texts. The crew also blames one another for mistakes and complains about not being paid from the lead. It’s kind of mess. The worst part is that the quality of the job is amateur. I have the exact same tile in an upstairs bath that is flawless. This particular job looks like a DIY with tiles that are different depths due to mortar not spread evenly. Now no one will return a call and they have my deposit money. I learned my lesson the hard way and hopefully someone can benefit from not making the same mistake I did.

Everything about Ryan exceeded my expectations. He was prompt, planned the work very well, did an excellent job with the transition from glass to ceramic tiles, and then left the job immaculate. Very reasonable and professional. If you hire him you will not be disappointed.

We had a great experience with phill and his team! Ran into an issue with a tile being discontinued when we needed more and they were able to be flexible and help us find a solution that turned out better than our original plan. Great people to work with!

Glanton contractors did a great job with my tile installation and vanity & toilet install in my bathroom. The work is very high quality at a price that made sense for the work. He was communicative and made to be clean and orderly with the workspace so that the rest of the house remained clean. Really enjoyed working with them.

His price to do the work very reasonable, he showed up on time, did what I asked and more. He is everything you want a professional to be and he is awesome to talk to, very personable! I would most definitely hire him again. Thank you, Jim.

Jim was absolutely fantastic. He was very responsive and quick to schedule when we requested work. In addition, he was very helpful and patient with us as we needed to pick out a trim for our edges. We picked out the wrong trim but Jim offered to go to Home Depot to find the right one for us which we really appreciated. We also weren't sure if we ordered enough tile sheets for the backsplash but Jim made it work with his craftiness and ability. We were very happy with the end result!
