Dealing with Greg Lutz with a Catered Affair was a pleasure. Greg always responded back to my messages sent and he responded very quickly. The service and food was excellent. All the staff I encountered with A Catered Affair were very nice, perfessional and they made my party a very enjoyable event. I have used caterers before but after dealing with A Catered Affair I will not use anyone else. I would recommend them to anyone because I know they will do an excellent job. Thanks again Catered Affair!!

From the very prompt responses from Chuck and John to ALL my questions and such when I was first thinking about booking them for our catering job for my office, to the food and the service we received, everything was TOP NOTCH!!! Honestly, Chuck and the quick and thorough customer service is why we decided to go with A Catered Affair for our office Christmas lunch. Jeremy, who delivered, served and cleaned up at our event was WONDERFUL and the food was TRULY delicious!! The ONLY comment made in any negative light was that the green beans and the carrots could have been cooked longer - they were a little too "crunchy" for most folks' liking. The meat however, turkey and the ham was literally the BEST we'd all had - everyone RAVED about it and the other side dishes (and we got ALOT of side dishes) were totally YUMMY! Everyone was extremely happy and FULL! We had a ton left over as well and we enjoyed it again today! I would recommend A Catered Affair to anyone and we WILL be using them for ALL our catering needs and have shared about them to our entire company here at Cox Media in Dayton, OH.

I hosted a baby shower for my best friend and needed the event catered. I was a little hesitant to use thumbtack for the simple reason I needed top of the line food and service. Jessica had a lot of positive reviews and was reasonably priced, so I decided to give her a shot. I can't possibly put into words how happy I am that she was available on Thumbtack. She went above and beyond on so many levels. Our food was absolutely delicious and looked amazing! From the presentation to the taste, she nailed it!

I had The Happy Chefs handle a birthday celebration dinner party for 10. Chef Jay and his crew did a top-notch job. Chef Jay was great at communicating before the event. At the event the food and the service were tremendous. The guests all raved about the food and clearly had a memorable evening. There were a number of courses/interaction points and their professionalism, personal interaction, flexibility and politeness were absolutely first class. In short, it was a spectacular event and I recommend The Happy Chefs without hesitation.

Charlie is awesome! Having only a day's notice, Charlie was able to work with me on creating a food menu (with certain dietary restrictions) while also providing me with a bar tender/ server, as well as plates & glassware. The day prior to my fundraiser, my caterer called and cancelled and I was stuck trying to find a new caterer that could provide a specialized food menu (no shellfish, pork, or dairy appetizers) for 30 guests as well as both a server to help set up/ close down the event and a bartender to serve drinks. In addition, I also required glassware and plate rentals. I contacted more than 20 caterers in the Cincinnati/ Kentucky area trying to find someone who could fulfill all of my requirements. Charlie responded quickly and worked with me (well past business hours) to create a personalized menu, find servers, and have everything organized. The next day, Charlie personally went to the event and did the set up to make sure that everything would run smoothly before handing off the event to one of his capable servers. Throughout the fundraiser, people came up to me and complimented the food and were pleased with the service. At the end of the night, I spoke with the host (who was unaware of any catering issues) and he thanked me for arranging the food/ service and praised Charlie & his server for the delicious food as well as leaving his kitchen clean and organized before leaving. Not only did Charlie work around a very tight schedule, but he kept me at ease throughout that very stressful day, letting me know what everything was in good hands and updating me whenever I called. Finding a caterer in the Cincinnati area that can help throw an elegant event with tasty food and great service is do-able; finding a caterer who can provide these same great services with only a day's notice is rare. I highly recommend calling Charlie for future catering needs- you will not be sorry.

We used Horchata LLC to cater for a group of people that we were presenting to. There were about 15 people in attendance. Every single person was highly impressed with the quality of food as well as the taste. There was plenty of food left over. The team at Horchata set up everything for us. I would recommend them to cater for any of your catering needs. I'm looking forward to using them in the future.

I used Divine Catering & Events to cater my baby shower. Mrs. Dabriah helped me from the beginning with picking the menu & finding something that fit my price range. She even went beyond that & helped me find a venue that would allow me to bring my own food in which was a huge help. She arrived on time & everything was set up perfectly & all my guest enjoyed her food. I would definitely use her again.

I had smoker ez BBQ supply the food for my wedding in June 2014. It was delicious. It came ready to eat, hot, and with all the supplies I needed to keep it hot, and ready for serving. Craig helped me to determine how much food I would need and portion sizing. Everything was wonderful and every time I get the chance i recommend smoker ez BBQ. I have also ordered from them for the super bowl 2015 &2016 and am always pleased with the food and service. I highly recommend both the food and the company. I order from them every time I can. Thanks for your awesome food and I will be returning for some more shortly.

Chef Otis is VERY knowledgeable. We organized a grilling how to class and date night for 5 couples. He dealt with a food allergy without batting an eye. The theme of the meal was Jamaican Jerk Chicken and it was amazing!!! We are already planning our next event with Chef Otis.

Streetside 62 has excellent food for a good value. The restaurant is a terrific place to have a meal in the dining room and a cocktail on the patio. Their catering is top notch (of course it helps dealing with the owner directly). The food does not drop in quality just because it is a catering job. The 2 weddings and a few corporate events catered by Matt where very very good. Would recommend to anyone for sure.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

      • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
      • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
      • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
      • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
      • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
      • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
