Hi! I work a regular 9 to 5 office job and do personal training and financial literacy training on the side. I have a B.S. in Management/Finance and am working in getting NASM certified as a Personal Trainer (although I do have 7 years of experience). I separated from active duty military this year so I’m looking for some extra cash. I really like helping people, outside of an office, so I thought I might find the opportunity here. I can shovel snow and provide pet safe ice melter for driveways and sidewalks, adjust the max temperature on most shower faucets for child safety, landscape, leaf clean, paint, install washers and dryers and ensure the plug fits your outlet or change the cord on your washer/dryer so it fits the outlet, replace broken parts on appliances, restore wood siding/floors/furniture, move furniture, dispose of yard waste, and assemble exercise equipment and instruct on proper usage. My technology expertise can help provide computer assistance, English/Spanish translation services, put together projects on various programs, assist with data entry, connect computer and smart devices around your home, advise you on how you can improve your home connection for things like gaming and security systems then help make any upgrades necessary, assist in running Ethernet cables between floors without being unsightly if your gaming room is on a different floor, install and set up smart devices like Google Nest cameras/doorbells/speakers, among various other services. These are just things I could name off the top of my head, feel free to inquire about anything and I’ll let you know if it’s within my skillset. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth getting a personal trainer?

If you have fitness goals that you’re having trouble accomplishing on your own, hiring a personal trainer can be worth the money. People rarely regret getting in shape — even if it costs money. Personal trainers create accountability, as you’ll have to confess to them if you don’t stick to your training schedule. They’re trained to push you just hard enough, and they take your body type and goals into account when creating a fitness plan.

How much does a personal trainer cost near me?

Expect to pay between $35 and $90 per hour for a personal trainer near you. The length of the session, as well as the number of sessions you book in advance, will have an impact on the price. You can often get lower prices per session by booking more of them. Group training also tends to be less expensive than one-on-one training, as is going to the gym instead of having the trainer come to meet you. Trainer certification is also a factor — trainers with more certification are likely to charge more.

It's important to do your research and get cost estimates from several personal trainers near you before you hire anyone.

How often should you see a personal trainer?

How often you should see your personal trainer depends both on your budget and your fitness level. If you’re new to the exercise routine, maybe start with one to three visits per week to establish a good routine and understanding. Talk to personal trainers near you to figure out the perfect cadence for your personal training sessions.

How can I find a trainer?

Search for personal trainers near you online, and identify the ones with the highest ratings. Read their customer testimonials, and look at customers’ before-and-after photos (if available). It’s also important to find out whether the trainers sought professional training and certification, if they can adhere to your schedule and if they can train you at a location that works for both of you.

Finally, contact several trainers for cost estimates. This way, you can hire a trainer who not only provides great services but also fits within your budget.

What exactly does a personal trainer do?

A personal trainer is tasked with working with a client to achieve fitness goals. Personal trainers may take clients in a small group or do one-on-one training. Their focus is on fitness goals — muscular capacity, working on cardiovascular endurance, improving flexibility, and even recommending diet changes and at-home exercises. Personal trainers may work with clients in the gym or at their homes, depending on their preference.

Is kickboxing good exercise?

Kickboxing is great exercise. It works your whole body and really gets your heart pounding. Kickboxing combines upper- and lower-body movements like roundhouse kicks and uppercut punches that boost calorie burning. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how much exercise you get. Kickboxing training that takes place in a martial arts studio will involve kicking and punching a sandbag or sparring with a competitor, both of which will sharply increase the amount of exercise you’ll experience in a kickboxing session.

Comparatively, a study by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) found that women doing group fitness cardio kickboxing burned between 6.45 and 8.3 calories per minute, or approximately 350-450 calories burned during an hour-long class. This is roughly what you can expect to burn with jogging or similar exercise, but ACE says that cardio kickboxing offers the added benefits of increased strength and flexibility, sharper reflexes, and improved coordination. Whether you’re training to fight competitively, learning kickboxing as a form of self-defense, or taking cardio kickboxing at your local gym, you’ll get a full-body workout with positive health benefits.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

Yes it is wonderful having a personal trainer come to your home, but that's just the beginning. Tania is professional, respectful, kind, and warm. She creates workouts that meet your needs and also don't make you too sore. I haven't had a personal trainer do that before. She is in tune with me and knows when to push and when to back off. She's the best personal trainer I've known. I've worked with 4 others over the years.

Throughout the entire exchange, joe has been the consummate professional. I will update my review after I've had some months of training with him. Joe was the third trainer I interviewed, and I was extremely impressed with the organized and scientific approach he takes to personal training.

Vanoy is the best at what he does! His approach to personal training is very individualized to your needs, and what you want to get out of personal training. I’m always sore in all the right places after my workouts, and I feel stronger and more in control of my body. As a dancer, strength training makes it possible for me to feel most comfortable on stage! I love working with Vanoy, and can’t wait to continue progressing with each session!

I've only been training with Tara for a few days, but so far I really enjoy working with her. She's very kind and caring, and has made the process of training less scary for someone like myself who has never had a personal trainer before. I'm looking forward to working with her!

I started with Strong Fit just 3 months before my wedding and the results were amazing! I was in the best shape of my life for my wedding & honeymoon. Marko was my trainer and he was fantastic. I worked out 3x / week and he always kept the sessions fun and interesting. Always something different and new. Marko is definitely an expert and designs training sessions to achieve the results you're looking for - I wanted to tone & trim and we did just that! He's also just very fun & friendly which made the sessions go by quickly. I've never been someone who works out regularly, so I was nervous to get started with a personal trainer - but StrongFit turned out to be an awesome place with a very comfortable environment. A small facility with all brand new equipment makes it a great place for a "non-gym" person. If you're considering a personal trainer, I HIGHLY recommend the crew from StrongFit!!! Your body will thank you :)

Jessica is so great at what she does! I was very hesitant to start working with a personal trainer being that I never have before and really have never lifted weights other than machines at large gyms like Planet fitness sometimes. I’ve progressed more with her in the last couple months than I ever have. I feel great and look forward to my sessions with her each week. She offers so much more than just an hour session. She’s helped with my diet and my work outs outside of the personal training sessions as well. She will adapt to your needs and comfort level but still push and encourage you when you need it. So glad I decided to give her a shot!

Tara is an exceptional personal trainer. She is very knowledgeable on many different types of exercises that help you work towards the results you desire. It never feels repetitious and never gets boring. She also cares to know about prior injuries or limitations you may have so you get the best workout designed for your abilities without putting you at risk. Tara takes the time to show you how to correctly do the exercises to ensure you are working out the correct muscles as well as having the correct form while executing the moves. She is very encouraging as well as acknowledging when you are pushing yourself and not just being lazy. However, she is also very understanding and adaptable if you are honest about not being able to do something you aren’t ready for quiet yet. She never belittles or pushes you to do a workout you aren’t comfortable with. Tara is also very flexible when it comes to scheduling workouts as well as sudden changes that may come up that affect the schedule. Her rates are very reasonable and you get the most bang for your buck. Instead of just solely focusing on workouts she also encourages you to stretch to avoid injury and stiffness. Tara takes the time to let you get water and stretch before resuming your session. She also makes it her priority to ensure you are eating well to accommodate the changes your body will start to experience as you workout. Lastly Tara is very personable and doesn’t just act as a personal trainer. She takes the time to get to know each of her clients. I would highly recommend her as a personal trainer if you are looking for a lifestyle change.

Bennett is extremely knowledgeable and knows what he is talking about regarding anything fitness related. He took on a guy like me, who was relatively new to establishing a workout routine, to someone that has now a decent knowledge about workouts, etc. nutrition part is tough, but like anything with personal training it is. But he is a professional, he cares. I lead a very busy, active life and sometimes it’s hard to get the workouts in, but Communication is Bennett’s highest quality and as long as if you do the workouts and keep up the communication with him, he knows. Virtual training is a whole new animal that I’ve never experienced before; but by being with Bennett he has shown things of myself that I never thought I could do when I’m doing a workout. Wish I’d be able to meet Bennett in person but if you want someone who cares; that’s Bennett 😊

Joe has been training me at EFF for over a year now and I can honestly say I can't see myself being committed to my own health and fitness with anyone else. The workouts are different every day with a grand variance of equipment that I either didn't have access to or would never have attempted on my own. Joe always pushes me to do my personal best. Along with being very knowledgeable in physical fitness and the necessary dietary needs, he is very accommodating with his schedule and is always professional. If you are ready to take charge of your health, Joe will give you all the tools you need !

I've been working with Tara for almost five months now and I've seen amazing results. I've used personal trainers before, but Tara has some truly unique workouts and knowledge to offer- way more than what you would get going somewhere else. She knows how to cater to your individual needs, switch things up when you need to, and figure out how to meet your goals. She has helped me eat better, work smarter, and be more motivated. Workouts are fun and energetic. I even look forward to getting up early to go to the gym. Definitely hire her- you won't regret it!

Robert blew me away and defied all expectations that I had. He is the meaning of a consummate fitness professional, and he drastically turned around for myself my personal training experience which was not good- since it predominantly was virtual that I had experience with. He is extremely knowledgeable about fitness and health 💪🏼💪🏼He is kind, caring, he catered workouts just for me, and he didn’t make me feel totally intimidated which Gyms and frequent Gym goers usually made me feel like over the years. He cares and his level of personalization speaks volumes. He made working out approachable and made it something for me now where I am excited to continue to work with him, which is why I hired him! I’m so lucky that I found him. I’m excited to continue working with Robert Kramer
