Chef Damon and his crew did an absolutely wonderful job catering my son’s Bar Mitzvah. Chef Damon catered a luncheon and evening event. The food was delicious, presented beautifully, and his staff was courteous and responsive. Chef Damon was able to meet numerous dietary needs: gluten free, casein free, and was able to label all dishes appropriately. I would recommend Chef Damon for any event that you need catered. Everything went as promised, and it was all stress free. I truly recommend Custom Catering for your special event.

Matt with Manna Truck did an awesome job for my daughter's Grad Party last month. Everyone loved the food and every item was fantastic. Matt was flexible in allowing us to choose the menu and provided many great choices. We had a combo food truck/catering. The burger was a huge hit as was the grilled cheese and the fries and homemade chips. I will definitely use Matt and Manna Truck again. It was so easy and no mess in my house! I highly recommend Manna Truck! Everything was incredible!!

Food was excellent. Chicken Marsala so delicious. Serving sizes robust. Greens were crisp, salad fresh and dressing light but FULL of flavor. Dinner rolls out of this world. The food arrived exactly on time and was still hot as it was served over the course of an hour. I will only use Manna Catering in the future for all my party needs. Thank you Dave. Outstanding experience. PS ... my Italians relatives were quit impressed.

What a refreshing change for ordinary catering! I was incredibly impressed with the quick response to my quote request and also pleased with the value I received. The food was very good and the selection fit our needs perfectly. I was absolutely blown away at the presentation of the buffet, you won’t get this feature from many caterers. It was a nice added touch. The customer service was outstanding and our event was very successful. Thank you again!

I hired Tres Belle Events to host a private dinner for my family and I and it was EXCEPTIONAL! My family was so impressed, and they had no idea that we could actually hire someone to cater a special lovely dinner for us. Vanessa and her team communicated with us throughout the entire process. The chef was great! The food was yummy and the presentation was all well put together! I've never seen such service offered in Ohio before. We look forward to hiring Tres Belle Events for many more events. You can't go wrong with with them.

People are still talking about the food from my wedding. Sure, it tasted amazing at the initial tasting. The delicious food and Laronda''s professionalism and fun personality sold us on this vendor. But I definitely expected the food at the wedding to taste less fresh - pre cooked, you know, weddingy. Not the case. It looked beautiful, and was fancy restaurant quality fresh. It couldn't have been more perfect. My venue didn't have anything that resembled a kitchen. I dont know how they did it. Some of my fondest memories from my wedding day are chomping down on a beef short rib and rosemary garlic potato wedges. The mac and cheese - to die for. The staff was amazing and friendly and super efficient. They set everything up and broke it down before I knew it. I'm telling you - The Main Squeeze has magic catering powers. Admittedly, I was one of those high maintenance brides. The team was super responsive and patient with me. They left no concern unaddressed and no question unanswered. And all at a price that's just about the same as other local (and less highly rated) caterers. Looking back now, knowing what kind of food and service I was going to get from The Main Squeeze I would have been happy paying twice as much as I did. Totally totally worth it. Love you guys!! Thank you!

When my husband and I were looking for wedding venues we targeted ones that would allow us to bring in our own caterers. Although we have had some pretty good "wedding food" in the past, we wanted to break away from the formal/traditional wedding setup and incorporate a more relaxed and fun atmosphere into our reception. Wrap It Up definitely helped us to accomplish this! Not only was the food phenomenal, but the staff was some of the friendliest and most accommodating group of individuals I had the pleasure of dealing with. Chef Anthony sat down with me to discuss my list of wants/needs, and then gave me suggestions on how he and his team could help make it the best day ever! We planned a menu that focused on their signature wrap menu (and TOTS), but served it in a way that allowed for individuals to also create their own flavor combinations. This allowed for those with food allergies and dietary restrictions to create a meal that would fit their needs. Guests were also able to choose items a la carte, or for the carb conscious individuals, select to have their meal "unwrapped." We have more than a few vegetarians and a handful of individuals with gluten allergies and this setup really helped to allow them access to foods they can eat. Not to mention the Zesty Veggie Wrap was the food of choice for even some of our most carnivorous guests (it’s just so good!!!). As much as I can appreciate a good formal wedding dinner it never fails that mid-way through the reception I always find myself hungry because the portions are typically smaller. With Wrap It Up as our caterer there was no need for guests to make a late night taco bell run as they were served with hearty portions of home cooked food full of robust flavors. Wrap It Up also put together snack trays for our cocktail hour which included a fruit tray and cheese and crackers. All of this as well was entirely customizable based on the budget we had agreed upon. I truly can’t thank Wrap It Up enough for their service. Of all the vendors we had they were the ONLY vendor to not ask me (The Bride) any questions on the wedding day. They made it a point to cover all bases prior to the wedding day so that all that was left was a well-planned execution. So much time is spent on selecting the perfect wedding vendors to help you achieve your "dream wedding." For my husband and I that dream was very simple: all of our friends, lots of beer, and exceptional food. Wrap It Up delivered more than we could have asked for!! I would hire them again in an instant! P.S. Don't forget the TOTS!!! :)

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
