Jason is a very pleasant, low key guy who prides himself on really knowing about strength training. He is always very considerate about the customer and their time. He is very punctual, never late and he always knows how to challenge you. He seems to know how to pace the workout based on his customer's ability and condition at the time of training. He is very knowledgeable and inventive on coming up with new exercises and movements that challenge you but never to excess. He is a very nice person and I would highly recommend him to anyone wanting to have personal care and training. Phil B in Beaverton, OR

Turk is a very experienced trainer. He is patient and very knowledgeable. People who stick with him will definitely achieve their goals. My goal is to bulk up. When I started training with him, I was 150 pound. I was skinny and a hard gainer. Now I weigh 165 with pretty decent muscles. Those 30 pound gain is not fat but almost pure muscle gain. I am a chemistry graduate student . I always ask him about what this exercise does since I have un-naturally high curiosity. He is always patient and takes his time explaining things in detail with me. I am really glad that I found him. he is way better than regular trainers from 24 fitness, LaFitness, and etc. The only thing I wish more is that I could gain more. But like I said, I am a very hard gainer. I am happy that I gained 15 pounds of lean muscle over 1 year. So if I can do it with my disadvantaged body type, you can definitely achieve your goal way faster with him training you.

Aaron has changed our lives! My husband and I have been working with Aaron Morton for personal training and it has been an incredible experience. He not only helps with fitness but meal planning, supplements and has incredible knowledge of physical therapy. I came to his sessions with an injury and he worked slowly with me until my knee healed. He understands people and training and is a great guy on top of it! I would highly recommend Aaron. Our lives have been changed in such a positive way, permanently!

Lisa was awesome! I purchased several sessions with her as a gift for my parents for Christmas and they have been so happy with her as a trainer. She has made them feel very comfortable, listened to what they were wanting out of their sessions, and really helped them get back on track with their exercise. Her knowledge in different kinds of strength training, exercise, and stretching has been perfect for them and the convenience of her coming to their house has made all the difference. I would highly recommend Lisa to anyone looking to get back in shape, become more flexible, and have a great time while doing so!

Taylor has been absolutely amazing since day one. When I began to look into personal training, I was a little nervous. I was worried about everything from hiring a horrible trainer who yelled at me or was uninterested to not having enough money to really commit to it. Taylor quickly calmed all of those fears. When I met for our free consult she was straight forward and professional while still being very personable. I took the leap and went for it and I have been SO happy with my results. Not only does Taylor completely know what she's doing, but she charges a very reasonable price and is always available to answer any questions I have at any time of the day. Shes fun and encourages me to live the best lifestyle I can. I promise if you hire her, you will not regret it.

I have been training with Laura for about a month and I am so pleased the results. She puts a lot of thought into designing a routine that works for me individually, she listens to me and knows what my goals are. I really enjoy the space where we train; I feel like I can focus and get the most out of my time with her. Laura is a genuine person and a joy to work with. I was training with Berley to improve my athletic performance, specifically speed, agility, and power. He worked with me for approximately five months and during that time really impressed me with his knowledge, interpersonal skills, and dedication to his craft. He always had excellent workouts planned that both tested my limits and increased my training-related knowledge. I would absolutely recommend him to others as a trainer.

I sought out personal training on the recommendation of my physical therapist. The goal was to continue strengthening exercises to improve the condition of my injured ankle and problematic knees. I have to admit, I was terrified to start working with a personal trainer... I was obese, out of shape, and feared that I would be judged. Then I stumbled across Corey at Thrive Body Balance and realized I had nothing to fear. He was very welcoming and willing to work with me unconditionally and without judgment. I've been working out with Corey weekly for nearly 6 months now. I feel so much stronger, and that has helped me both physically and in terms of my confidence. I also feel like I'm taking great strides towards lifelong health, as Corey works with me on "corrective" exercises to improve the alignment and balance of my body. I would most definitely recommend Corey to anyone and everyone. He is extremely knowledgeable, understanding, flexible, patient, wise, and truly just a joy to spend time with. After all this time, I still look forward to my weekly personal training sessions. They have been worth every penny, and I feel very lucky to have found a trainer like Corey.

I had a great experience strength training with Jaylen. I saw him twice a week over the course of 3 months to help strengthen/rehab a snowboard knee injury that had me out for about 3 months prior to meeting him. He helped me achieve my goals and exceed my expectations on many levels. He was more than able to lay out a plan for each session and was very receptive to input as to what worked and what didn't. He also helped me on target areas that I wanted to see more improvement on. He was very upbeat and helped me to stay motivated and made me want push myself every session. Also made me want to stick with a diet regimen. The end result was fantastic and the overall experience was superb. I would highly recommend him and would work with him again in the future!

I have been training with Jake for about 4 months. I can say he is the best trainer I've had. And I've been through a few. What I can say about Jake: I feel like he's got my back. Any trainer can push you to work hard and make you do a hard workout. What I like about Jake is that he can push me but knows when I should also pull back and rest. He is wonderful with stretches! He is also very fit and a good coach. The two qualities together make for an exceptionally effective trainer. His passion for fitness shows. Jake is also a good communicator. That doesn't mean he's always chatty or got a slick front but he's very good at reading his clients and seeks to understand and listen to you. He's a good read of people. I also don't feel judged by Jake like I have with other trainers. He's a super great guy who treated my initial difficulties working out with empathy, compassion and flexibility. With Jake, I had come back to working out again after a physical setback and had put on the most weight I'd ever gained. I am also a woman in her fifties and weight is the hardest to get off than previously for me. In three months he's helped me reduce all my measurements! And last but not least, Jake is a professional. He shows it in his voice, conversation and his attitude. Do not look any further for a trainer! Jake is the best.

I call Kim my Spirit Trainer because that is exactly what she is....she is always there with me—helping me dig deeper, listen to my body, celebrate my wins (big and small). Kim’s customized workouts were a game changer. They keep me accountable AND allow me to workout when and where it works for my schedule--on vacation, at the local track, early mornings at the gym. Training with Kim keeps me fit physically and mentally. Being able to check-in monthly in-person and continually set achievable goals is FUN and I always learn something new. I never thought I would be someone with a trainer and now I can't imagine anything different. Kim is a true gem!

Alex responded to my request quickly and was quite personable in his responses (not the generic messages one normally receives here). He was incredibly flexible and worked with me/my schedule to provide a training time that would benefit me. He adapted his training sessions to fit my personal needs and created an awesome workout regimen that worked me super hard but was really enjoyable the entire time. After our workout, he had some diet and supplement suggestions to aid me in reaching my fitness goals. Finally, to make it even better, he charges a very reasonable rate considering all the personal care he gave to my workout. I highly recommend Alex and Empire Fitness!

Matt has been training me for 6 years preparing me, through my discharge from the Navy in 2016, for my first football season at Southwestern College in 2017. Last year I sustained tendinitis in both knees during Southwestern's summer workouts, and had it throughout the season. He wrote out a specific training regimen tailored to reversing my tendinitis in December 2017, and within 2 months it has been completely reversed. Subsequently, I managed to PR in squat at 525 during my team's spring lifts. I highly recommend Matt for not only his knowledge, but his passion, energy, and attentiveness during workouts.

I began training with Laura December 2017. I have been impressed by Laura’s work ethic and sincere desire to help her clients meet their goals. Laura never misses an appointment and is always on time. I like to know that I can rely on her to be there because that motivates me to never miss my appointments. Laura is very personable, not judgmental at all, and always in good spirits. Laura has helped with weight training and with my overall fitness and health. It has been so much fun! I have had my strength and muscle size increase more than ever before! It is so nice to have a personal trainer that takes a huge interest in your goals. Laura stays constantly focused on your whole training session. I love that she is always getting the next machine or weights ready so that we can jump into the next set. Laura makes every minute of training count. Having a personal trainer is a way of life to me now. If you are committed as much as she is, having Laura on your side as a personal trainer will reap big rewards for you.

If I could give more than 5 stars I would. Shane was an amazing coach and I would recommend him to anybody beginning or even advanced in fitness. My friend who was training with Shane referred me to him because my goal was to compete in my first Powerlifting competition without prior training experience. She also had nothing but good things to say about him. He was really knowledgeable and clearly knew what he was doing. I was confident that he wasn't like other trainers/coaches out there, who just bullshit their clients. He was extremely helpful in helping me correct my form/technique with two main goals; to effectively lift heavy and train safely to prevent injury. He was very supportive and pushed me past my limits. But he knew just where to draw the line, to be sure I wasn't going to hurt yourself. I was the stubborn client who thought constantly busting my ass was going to get me far. But he taught me how to train smart. Making sure I was hitting rest periods, eating good and resting good. At first I didn't trust that approach to it, but noticed how great I was feeling and how quickly I was progressing when I would listen to his advice. Starting every workout he'd ask how I was feeling, how I slept, and how my diet was going. Sometimes life happens; long work days, poor diets, and stress. I'd feel really discouraged and mad when my lifts weren't going the way I wanted, but he knew how to keep me confident and motivated. One thing that set him aside from other trainers, is that he didn't clock out after the 1 hour sessions. He'd send me home with workouts to do on my other training days. Then he'd constantly text me to see how the workouts went, or critique me from videos I'd email him. He was very easy going and flexible with schedules and payments. I trained with him once a week for 6 months. Prior to this I didn't know much of powerlifting, never trained for it nor competed. But he really pushed me far. In my meet I took 1st in my weight class and a few state records. I couldn't have done it without him! He's a really great coach/trainer in every aspect!

I have been training under Paige for several months now and I can safely say that I would not have reached my current level of fitness without her expertise. Paige is an extremely professional, experienced, and very friendly trainer. The training sessions I have with her are always set at just the right amount of intensity to be challenging, but never too difficult. If I have some injury or if a particular workout movement doesn't happen to work properly for me, Paige always seems to know a variation or similar workout that gets the same results. That being said, she likes to be flexible anyway, and varies the workouts and even throws in new ones so that I don't grow too complacent. In addition to these personal training sessions Paige is well educated in nutrition, and has thus worked with me to plan out certain food goals and other additional changes I can make to my diet, specifically my macros. Signing up with Paige has indeed been a life changing experience since I've never been active in the past. She has been very nonjudgemental and has taken the time to teach me the basics of everything I need to know, especially when it comes to proper form when lifting weights and how to improve my running. Paige is remarkably passionate about her work; very motivational, and she's happy to cheer you on when you break your PR! In short, I highly recommend her as a personal trainer!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    Is kickboxing hard?

Kickboxing is as intense a workout as you want it to be. As with any fitness regimen, the more effort you put in, the more results you will get. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how physically challenging it is. Combat or self-defense kickboxing, where you train in a martial arts studio with sandbags or spar against combat partners, can be an intense physical workout. Group kickboxing classes that use sandbags as part of the workout will also elevate the degree of intensity, because of the level of exertion punching and kicking the bag requires. Cardio kickboxing group fitness, which employ kicking and punching moves but no sandbags, has comparable intensity to jogging but works a wider range of muscles while increasing strength, flexibility and coordination. Here are some of the core kickboxing moves:

    • Cross: A straight punch that you throw slightly across your body, using your dominant hand.
    • Jab: A quick, straight, face punch. Usually thrown with the non-dominant hand.
    • Uppercut: A punch thrown up from the midsection (using either hand) that connects with the underside of your opponent’s chin.
    • Hook: A curved punch (using either hand) that connects with your competitor’s jaw or chin.
    • Side kick: A kick delivered when your competitor is at an angle to you. Raise your leg to the side, then bend at the knee to deliver the kick.
    • Front kick: A kick delivered straight on while you are facing your opponent.
    • Roundhouse kick: A kick delivered by swinging a leg up in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion (depending on which leg you’re using) with momentum to strike the opponent with the instep of the foot.

What should you wear to kickboxing?

What you wear to kickboxing can vary based on the setting. For kickboxing group fitness classes that are part of a gym’s cardio class schedule, standard fitness attire is appropriate. Athletic sneakers, pants or shorts that you can comfortably kick in without getting tangled or flashing anyone, and a top that allows for easy movement when punching and jabbing are all good choices. You won’t need protective gear or gloves, as most cardio-based kickboxing classes do not use punching bags.

Kickboxing training that takes place at a martial arts studio typically requires protective gear. You may need boxing gloves (beginners may want 12-ounce or heavier gloves for more cushioning) and hand wraps that protect and support your hands under the gloves while you punch the bag. If your kickboxing training includes sparring with opponents, you’ll need a mouthguard and any protective head and body gear your studio requires. Always be sure to bring plenty of water, too.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

What do you need for kickboxing?

What you need to bring to kickboxing depends on where you are working out and what your goals are. For a gym or fitness club’s cardio-based group kickboxing class that does not use punching bags, you generally need only appropriate workout gear and enough water. For kickboxers who are training in a martial arts studio, working one-on-one with a trainer toward a specific goal or sparring with competitors, you will need your own boxing gloves (12- to 16-ounce gloves provide more protection for beginners) and hand wraps (to protect and support your hands under the gloves, as well as keep them dry). If your lessons are in a martial arts studio, you may not be permitted to wear shoes, so bring clean socks if you don’t like to go barefoot. If your training includes sparring, you may be required to wear a mouthguard and/or protective headgear. Whether you’re in a group fitness class or hardcore training session, bring a sweat towel for your comfort and the comfort of people around you.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.
