Rick was a joy to work with! He was organized, always on time, and did a wonderful job at our wedding. Musicwise, I'd say my husband and I were not terribly concerned with what songs were played, we just wanted our guests dancing and having a good time. We picked out all the "special moment" songs and let Rick handle the rest. There was one missed entrance song, which didn't really matter to us anyway, but everything else ran smoothly. Rick is easy to work with and easy to get a hold of (this is not always the case with all wedding vendors, as we found out, so it's definitely appreciated). As a bride, I found relief when I could hire a vendor and be confident that that aspect of my wedding is "taken care of" and not something I needed to worry about anymore. Rick gives you that confidence. We highly recommend him!

We hired Steady State Studios to provide photography, videography, and DJ services for our wedding on 08/25/18, and we were beyond impressed! Not only was it convenient to have all 3 services combined into one business, but it also allowed for the entire event to run smoothly. The photographer, DJ, and videographer were very professional, and a ton of fun to work with! Each of them made sure that everything went as planned to the best of their ability. We were also able to rent a fantastic Photo Booth from them, which our guests really enjoyed and were able to keep a photo from our wedding day. I would definitely recommend Steady State Studio to anyone searching for a reliable, fun photographer, videographer, or DJ.

Julie bartended my large wedding of 250 people. She went above and beyond to be of help preparing for the day, suggesting amounts of alcohol to purchase, and keep in contact with me about details and plans for the day. I only heard positive things from my guests about her and only saw her smiling and enjoying herself throughout the whole night. I would recommend Julie for any event large or small in the area that you need a friendly professional bartender for!

For my parents 50th wedding anniversary we purchased a family photo session with Jerrad and was impressed from first contact. I had never used Thumbtack before, and Jarred was prompt with a response and his package/prices were reasonable. The photo shoot occurred on location and Jerrad was timely and professional. He was patient with our ideas and offered some excellent advice along the way. My son will need senior pictures in a few years and I will not hesitate to call Still Soul Photography. Thank you Jerrad!

Tom walked us through the overall process and worked with us on the ceremonial aspect of our wedding. He traveled across Portland in a short amount of time to meet our personal needs. The ceremony was short and sweet as requested and he was audible and clear the entire service. Even after the wedding Tom continued to go the extra mile by helping us obtain our certified copy of our license in a timely manner. Nothing less than an outstanding minister and would recommend to all.

Alison took us on for a wedding at a very late date. Our wedding planning had gotten delayed and we really needed to find someone who could jump in and help us. Alison certainly did! She was fun and calming to work with. She worked with us even though we had a very difficult venue to work at. No electricity and no real prep area. She was still willing to give it a go.She and her staff were on time and worked well and professionally. There were minor issues with the food but I blame that on the venue. It is difficult to keep cold things cold and hot things hot when you have to transport them to a park setting. We chose a coleslaw as one of the dishes and it got quite soggy. It was a warm day so I think that might just be par for the coarse. I would work with Alison again. She has a wonderful selection at her wonderland of food!

Tami was AMAZING! From the first time I reached out to her to the day of our wedding Tami was so incredibly helpful and commutative. Not only is she truly gifted, but she is just a genuine person! We had so much fun meeting her at our cake tasting that my fiancé was really looking forward to seeing her again on our wedding day, but Tami was such a pro she was in and out with her delivery and he just missed her! We think you're awesome Tami! Thanks for everything :)

Will was absolutely wonderful! We had an intimate little wedding of 30 people, but even with that low of a head count, there was so much to be coordinated. He took charge in the best way possible--very courteous and collaborative. He was so pleasant to work with and so calm under pressure. He also had such nice mannerisms dealing with all the guests and our wedding party. People loved him. Our wedding day was absolutely perfect because of him and I can't say enough good things about him! Just know that you're in good hands and with him, you'll be able to enjoy every single minute of your special day with no stress or worry!

Working with Maribel at Fusion International Catering to cater our Wedding was a dream. She was very responsive and adapted to changes, answered all our questions, and offered great suggestions. The real star however was the wonderful food. We had plenty in quantity and variety and many people took plates home. It not only tasted amazing but it was presented beautifully. We had originally worked with another cater and a month out it became clear they were not going to work. They did not get back to us timely and we were afraid they would not be reliable on the big day. Maribel and her team stepped in and saved the day. I highly recommend them!

Ricardo did an excellent job of videotaping our 50th wedding anniversary. Since we have a family member who does video editing, we just needed the videotaping service. Ricardo is reasonably priced and we enjoyed working with him. Dave & Kay Klick Beaverton, OR

McCale did a wonderful job DJing and MCing our wedding reception! He was very responsive and very professional during the planning process and our event. We had guests of a variety of ages and he made sure there were hits from a variety of decades. Everyone had a blast on the dance floor, young and old. We had so many family members and friends comment on how great the music mix was after the event. He also helped facilitate various announcements during our reception, which helped our reception to flow smoothly.

Sarah Haimes has truly been a dream to work with. I started booking her travel dates and can't be even more thankful for having her be the one to document very precious moments of my life. She is primarily a wedding photographer, but OMG you know it's talent that no matter the time of day, or the location, or the genre of portraiture. Because Shuttergram Photography PREFORMS. That is the true beauty of working with a professional! Shuttergram Photography stands out from other photographers in the industry because of her unique eye and artistic approach to all sessions. She has strong work with single subjects all the way to group photos for families or wedding portraits. But what really gets me is her artistic editing and knowing how to highlight your best features that make you feel like a million bucks. I'm a proud client and supporter of Shuttergram Photography. And I've been contemplating on a vow renewal just so I can get wedding portraits with her artistic vision!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

What does a wedding event coordinator do?

Pulling off a large, complex wedding or an elegant, small affair requires juggling myriad details, including the officiant, food, drink, wedding cake, entertainment, transportation, rehearsal dinner, photography, equipment rentals, venue reservations and more. A wedding event coordinator can help you keep track of these details, overseeing the planning process and managing everything on the day of your wedding. Each wedding coordinator (and wedding) is different, but in general you can expect an event coordinator to:

  • Help you devise a realistic wedding budget and hold your vendors to it.
  • Map out a master plan that includes all of the details including ceremony music, favors, the guest book and more.
  • Suggest ceremony and reception locations that fit your wedding size, budget and vision.
  • Suggest florists, photographers, bands, caterers and other vendors that fit your budget.
  • Negotiate vendor contracts for the best deals.
  • Create a timeline for the day of the wedding that includes each vendor and member of your wedding party.
  • Mail invitations and track RSVPs.
  • Answer questions about wedding etiquette and current wedding trends.
  • Manage the wedding day from supervising vendors and setup to handling last-minute emergencies.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

What is a wedding planner?

A wedding planner is a professional service provider whose job it is to organize and execute all the details of a couple’s wedding. A wedding planner can be contracted at any stage in the wedding planning process to help to any degree the couple is willing to pay for. Wedding planning is similar to event planning in that a planning team handles the coordination of multiple wedding elements including catering, venue, guests, entertainment, decor, transportation and more. Anyone who has ever been involved in a wedding can confirm that wedding planning is hard work. Experience brings wisdom when it comes to avoiding or resolving day-of challenges. There is no legal regulatory body that oversees or certifies wedding planning as an industry. Anyone who chooses can call themselves a wedding planner. When looking for a wedding planner, be sure to read reviews, and make smart hiring decisions by asking about licenses and insurance.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.
