I went with Compass as Chris was able to give me a time to replace my garbage disposal unit. He was thoughtful to say there was a traffic delay and still make it with a few minutes. After the installation, Chris took a look at another plumbing problem with a shower faucet and we made plans to repair that at a later date. Call him if you're in need of most household repairs.

Lino did an excellent job of cleaning up and preparing my rental house for occupancy after it was vacated without being properly cleaned or cared for. He did major cleaning in the kitchen, painting and wall touch-up in the living room, minor cupboard and storm window repair; and cleaning of gutters and debris left behind by previous tenants. He came to the job exactly at the time promised, worked diligently, and completed the work on time. He asked me about a couple of things I had overlooked--and agreed to take care of them. I was completely satisfied with the quality, time required, and cost of the work Lino completed. I will definitely use him again and have no reservations in commending him for the good work he did on my house.

Anatolie the owner of Oscar tiles is a professional! He cares about getting the work to your satisfaction and will not assume anything before he reach you and get your opinion. Tiles are art! Each customer likes it to be installed to their taste, and Anatolie make sure this is what he does. He also worked very clean. His English is not perfect, but I worked on other remodel projects with native English speakers that were not even near to communicate and close all the details and small things as Anatolie did! If you hire him you will just be in the best hands!!!

I truly can't speak highly enough about Jose's work with us on a last minute, high pressure drywalling project this week. I contacted Jose through Thumbtack once I realized we wouldn't be able to finish in time, and Jose truly saved us from closing for another work day and canceling over 20 appointments in the process. He was very quick and clearly an expert in the process of hanging drywall. He's very "let's get to it" about his work and doesn't waste time talking or otherwise fussing around. He saved us big time. Next time, we will just hire Leftcoast to do the drywalling instead of messing around with it ourselves. Thank you Jose!

From replacing light fixtures to repaving our driving, Paul has been our go-to guy for all our home improvements. He is currently remodeling our kitchen and has gone above and beyond our expectations. Paul is professional and charges a reasonable rate for his high quality work. I have recommended him to several friends who say the same thing!

We had Gavin do a variety of items (reconnect a bathroom vanity, hang a mirror, install bathroom items, install closet door guides, vertical blinds in the dining room, reconnect the kitchen sink, reconnect an electric cooktop and install smoke/carbon monoxide detectors). He was a great communicator before he arrived to verify the time he needed to arrive (had to coordinate with a countertop installer and carpet shampoo company). He arrived on time, very personable and asked if there was any additional work. Gavin is very nice and performed everything on our list without hesitation.

Brett led the design and purchasing of our Milgard premium Windows and Hunter-Douglas Blinds including installation follow-up. He also advised us on tile design. Over $8k spent and we could not be happier with our Remodel. Brett is creative, honest, and personally skilled in remodeling work as a former professional installer himself. Next project we'll be happily once again calling on Brett!

When I hired Sharon Hocking to come in and do a complete Interior Design of our Living and Dinning Rooms I had no idea just how wonderful this experience would be. Sharon was excellent to work with and listened to all of my concerns, ideas and suggestions. She was very communicative and prompt when we would set up meetings. Her attention to detail is beyond anything else I could have done on my own. Because I still work full time Sharon was able to do all of the leg work and then some. The next time I get ready to do some more decorating in my home Sharon will be the first and only Interior Designer that I will hire.

My experience with JDR Builders, John Rank specifically, was outstanding. The project was a complete renovation of a dilapidated dry cleaning building into a state compliant OMMD facility. The project was roughly 3 months long, and required tight timeline management both for cost reasons and filing deadlines for the state certification. John's construction experience, and project management experience set him apart from most of the contractors we have worked with in the past. His initial proposal was well thought out. We agreed on a realistic budget. He managed to that budget, and submitted 1 change request for the entire project. He managed the inspectors and the permitting, which was an area of real concern, as the building was old, and the city was waiting for someone to renovate it. His commercial experience really came through during this phase; the city had numerous issues regarding the antiquated electric. At one point we were in jeopardy of being able to even receive power from the street. He was available when I needed questions answered, and he never tried to confuse the issues with technical details. In short he was good to his word start to finish. The quality of work was top notch, with a great deal of finishing work done at his expense. He recognized obvious gaps in our planning, raised the issues to us, and then took action based on our feedback. What went wrong with the project? Nothing. As issues came up, there was always a plan for resolving them, always options for maintaining the budget. I have personally been involved with a dozen projects of this scope and size, and have suffered through all forms of contractor short comings, and bad circumstances. Contractors who are great at construction, but terrible at managing a timeline or budget, or great at managing the budget, but at the expense of a useful product. This was simply a clinic on how to run and delivery a project. Thank you to JDR Builders for your hard work and know how.

We had a great experience with Start Remodeling. We had them replace 9 interior doors and do several sheetrock repairs throughout our home. Warren was very responsive in setting up an initial bid and answering any questions we had. Both he and Loren were punctual every day and kept us abreast of what was going on, even when there were unexpected hiccups (like defective doors that had to be returned). I appreciated Loren's attention to making sure that the work was done correctly and thoroughly. They were both very courteous and considerate of our space/belongings despite the fact that we are living through a remodel and have stuff everywhere. I was pleasantly surprised at how thoroughly they cleaned when the job was all done...they left my floors better than when they arrived!

"JR was very professional and friendly. He was answered all of our questions at the estimate visit. The estimate was complete, including detailed drawings of the remodel which made it easy to see the vision of the completed remodel (we got 4 estimates in total for our kitchen remodel, all of the other contractors wanted to charge for any drawings of the remodel AND we would only get them after we signed a contract). JR met with us to pick out the granite and answered many (and I do mean a lot) of our questions about the process of the remodel. The estimate for the remodel was exact, and there wasn't any additional or hidden fees in our remodel. We love our new kitchen. We will recommend Accurate Construction to all of family and friends. Thank you James and Angie Anderson

We were blown away with the remodeling that Clint did. He transformed both of our bathrooms from, “Gee, sure hope no one has to use the bathroom” to “come on and check out our bathrooms!” He did everything from top to bottom, including installation of tile on the floors & showers, cabinetry, sinks, counters, ceiling fan/heaters, and painting. His skill, attention to detail and work ethic are all top notch. We highly recommend Clint for whatever work you want to love!

Arthur is a great guy to work with...I was able to work with him during the initial stage of the project. He is detail oriented and was very responsive in providing the quote , confirming the scope and details for the renovation project. Would work with him in future projects from start to end to give better feedback the quality of work and service of the whole EvoDesign Enterprises team. Cheers!!

The workers did a excellent job, doing a no seam installation. They also did our kitchen floor, which had some very tight spaces to work in, also with no seams.

IRL did the majority of the work on a complete renovation of a condo built in 1975. New flooring, paint, baseboards, crown molding, doors, ceiling fans, kitchen and bathroom cabinets, appliances, new toilets and sinks. It turned out just as I had imagined.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
