It can be stressful having work done in your house, especially if you no nothing about construction. It requires you to have trust and faith in someone you may not know, which is difficult. William Dever and his crew made that easy for me. From the start, Bill was professional, friendly, and easy to talk to. He listened to my ideas, was patient with my endless questions, and took time to make sure I understood the process. When unexpected things occurred which changed the scope of the work, he was flexible and reassuring, and more than willing to work within the confines of my budget. I was really impressed with his crew, and the HVAC crew he had on hand as well. They were friendly and respectful. The work they did was really stellar - absolutely high quality. They replaced a wall and ceiling, took down tile and repaired those walls, and replaced an old vinyl floor with tile. The wall and ceiling work was smooth, and the floor is beautifully done. The crew also did an excellent job leaving the work spaces as clean as humanly possible, which was a perk I wasn't expecting. I was impressed with A.D.A.D. from the start, and am still impressed, long after the finish. I would recommend them in a heartbeat.

I have a Cement Spanish Tile roof that was leaking. Sherman Keller came and documented the problems with photos and a detailed write up of the work needed. He did the repair when he said and did a clean, efficient and professional job when he said he would. I would call him again and recommend him to my friends and neighbors.

Mark (owner) has done several roof and siding jobs for me, but he has a genius for finding simple solutions to those one-of-a-kind problems and projects that you just can't figure out. I've explained problems to 4 or 5 contractors or handymen, who have to think about it so long it never happens. Mark always has an instantaneous and inexpensive idea that works. One trip to Home Depot and done. Examples of solutions: directing ambient heat from the furnace room into other spaces (about $45 in materials); diverting water with odd drainage routes around the house (under $20 materials); building a quick vine support in the garden (about $35); and so on. He works until the work is done -- sometimes finishing in the dark wearing a headlamp -- and he cleans up after himself. I first hired him for roof and siding, but now rely on him for all kinds of jobs, large and small.

Will has done numerous jobs for us- he redid our kitchen (floor, paint, cabinets, and mosaic tile backsplash), retiled our fireplace, redid our bathroom (floor, paint, and installed new sink and vanity), among other projects. He is honest, fair, and reliable. I recommend him to all of my friends and family.

A few months after purchasing our first home (an older rehabbed home), we begin to notice leaks inside two neighboring window frames. We reached out to several companies but were told the job was either "too small" OR that we needed to replace our ENTIRE roof ($$$) before attempting to fix the current problem (literally we got estimates from $75 to $30K). This left me pretty frustrated and stressed, I wanted to figure out what was causing the current leak then plan for what was potentially a larger project. After nearly two weeks of searching, we found Philadelphia City Roofing! They came out earlier than expected, gave me a reasonable estimate, and was willing to make suggestions about breaking my larger roof project into manageable parts. A few hours after they completed initial work, there was a significant rain. So far no leak! Their integrity, attention to detail and solutions-oriented approach make me excited about continuing to work with this company.

I give my highest recommendation to Jake Esh and his team. Polite, professional, prompt - followed through on each and every detail of the project. The workmanship on my Trex deck is the best that I've seen. Not a single screw, fastener or flaw can be seen. The attention to detail was superb. Jake explained every option of each detail for approval prior to moving ahead with the work. He also fixed a roof leak that has been plaguing our house since we moved in - and did so at a very reasonable price. We had some good choices in deck builders as we conducted our search, but now that the project is completed we are convinced that we definitely made the right choice with Stoney Ridge Home Improvements. We'll be asking them back this spring to look at our other renovation projects we have planned.

It was a pleasure dealing with Alec and AV Contracting. He immediately came out when I first contacted him to replace the roof on my Shed that was almost thirty years old. His price was competitive and well within my budget. He showed me different samples as well as made recommendations for the type of shingles and capping I should replace the roof with and venting for the roof/shed. Most important, the job/roof when completed what excellent - Meticulously installed with impressive installation. It took him one day to complete the job. Another note, that impressed me was that Alec was friendly and approachable. No matter when I called or text him, he was happy to assist me or answer any questions. When I replace the roof in my house, I will not bother contacting any one else- Alec and AV Contracting have my business in the future.

We found out one morning that our roof had damage from a storm over night. James came out that same day. Looked at our roof, told us he could be out the next day if the rain held off enough and gave us a quote. We booked him and he was out the next day to repair it. He took pictures and sent them to us (it was a 3 story house) in case we needed them. He was very polite, professional, and did and amazing job in a very timely manner. We would definitely hire him again for future jobs and would recommend him to anyone who needs roof work done!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
