Tony catered our semi-formal backyard BBQ style wedding reception. It was an enormous success! All of our guests talked about how delicious the food was and Tony's staff kept the wine flowing. Tony's menu was creative and well-planned, with options for everyone, from small children to vegetarians. The preparation was clean and fresh. He captured our value for well-prepared, fresh and healthy food. I would recommend Tony and his staff for any party!

What an amazing bartender! Brilliant Affairs had the pleasure to be at a wedding where Casey bartended. Immediately he seemed to be and was a friendly, and easy-going person. He was the only bartender at the wedding and did a splendid job. We ran out of cups and needed more ice during the reception so he went above and beyond his duties to go out and get more for the guests. We would highly recommend him to anyone! Cheers!!!

Anton was so wonderful to us during the whole process. From the first phone call, picking our buffett menu and pricing. We had a set per person price and he quoted us under it. We had impeccable service at our wedding reception. His staff treated my husband an I like a king and queen. Now to the food. The best I can come up with is amazingly awesome. Everything was way beyond my expectations. Every guest personally came to us remarking how superb the food was. I highly recommend Feast Caterers for any event you may need a caterer for. I look forward to planning another event with Chef Anton.

We had a small breakfast gathering for a few guests that had attended a wedding. The original guest count started out at 25 but ended up at 16. Linda rolled with the punches and easily made the adjustment. The menu was customized for us and all of our requests were met. We were glad to be treated as if we had been customers for years. The price was very fair, the quality of the food was very good and the service was extraordinary.

We can't say enough about Shonta and Indigo Blooms Co. Her creativity, and attention to detail were beyond every expectation we had. She worked so well with us, and the various vendors we had, that it made our wedding and reception flow perfectly. If you want someone that gets coordinating weddings, receptions, and various events, work with Indigo Blooms.

Clesha is an amazing person; highly professional as well as very nice. She did an amazing job planning our event- a wedding reception. She was really easy to work with (even though I hired her less than a month before our event) and I am really happy with the way our event decor turned out. I loved all the details from the floral stage backdrop to the centerpieces to the uplighting. It all looked perfect. I especially really appreciate the fact that she kept on checking on us till the end to see if we need anything else and there actually were some changes that we made last minute but she was really helpful in making things the way we wanted- I really appreciate that. I would definitely recommend her to anyone looking for an amazing decoration at their event and I will be calling you for my next event for sure. Thank You Clesha! You and your team did an amazing job!!

We used Allison last year for our wedding anniversary dinner and she made crab imperial for us. One of the best I've ever had. We are about to celebrate another anniversary and we will be definitely calling on her again. Very personable and she takes pride in her cooking.

My husband and I rented a taco truck through Jerry's Kitchen for our engagement party turned surprise wedding and we were nothing short of amazed! We loved that Jerry's Kitchen uses texting for booking and venmo for payments, this really made booking smooth and convenient. Scott was so easy to work with and helpful with finding which truck suited our needs and budget. 5 out of 5 starts for sure! We will definitely be using Jerry's Kitchen for future party needs!

I cannot say enough about how amazing Denise is to work with. The candy bar at my January 13, 2018 wedding was beyond my expectations. I had almost 100 lbs. of candy for the bar. Her selections were unmatched by any other vendor I looked at (I looked at a lot!). The jars, scoops, and bags (with personal labels) were so beautiful and professional. We supplied her with some photos and other decorations and she set up the bar the day of with everything we gave her and she even added her own touches that made it truly beautiful. Denise was so easy to communicate with and responded quickly. I choose to pay for the candy bar a little at a time using PayPal and Denise was sure to send me an email to let me know she received a payment every time! I will update this with a photo or two once I get them from my Photographer (the candy bar looked so good that everyone went up there during dinner and I didn't even get a chance to take a picture before people went for it!). If you are looking for amazing quality, service, design, and price for your candy bar you found it here in Brilliant Affairs!!!

I hired Tina for my best friend's wedding shower and the experience was outstanding. The time and detail she took to design the table made her bites look as amazing as they tasted! All of my guests raved about the food, it's presentation and how sweet Tina was to speak with. Thank you for an amazing event!! Tina will be my first call for our next big party for sure. Highly and happily recommended.

We hired beeandjay’s catering for our wedding and I must say we were very pleased with how professional they were. We were also very grateful that they allowed us to have a hand in our menu choice. All the other catering companies we called had menu choices for us to pick from and it was things I nor my husband ate. Beeandjay’s catering was understanding of any changes that we made. The day of the wedding they arrived early to make sure everything was running smoothly. I highly recommend beeandjay’s catering for your next event.

The whole experience was great. Latonya worked around my schedule and was answering my emails even at 11pm at night. I think the food presentation was outstanding and everything came out great and tasty! The guests were satisfied and I was as well. Only thing I can say was that the chicken tenders were a little dry but that's due to transferring and holding. Other then that, I will be very glad to have her cater my events again. :)

Dhara and pooja are two of the most talented and creative decorators I've known. They make a great team. My fiancee and I had no clue on what we wanted or wedding reception dinner to look like and only dhara and pooja were able to understand our gibberish clues and turn that into a very elegant piece of art you can imagine. And all of that in a very limited time. All the guests loved it and so did we. Will definitely recommend revecraft events for your wedding/party decorations.

If you’re looking for a woman who can plan literally everything for your wedding to the point where you are being told multiple times that you are the most calm bride to ever get married? Well, that’s what happened to me! Look no further folks – With Fab You Bliss Occasions I whole-heartedly trusted Lauren with everything she had planned for us, and my husband and I were NOT disappointed! Where do I even begin when it comes to writing a review for Fab You Bliss? From the second I was engaged up to even weeks after my wedding, Lauren has been by my side and was always two steps ahead of me when it came to planning and anticipating my needs! She takes her time and pays mind to every single minor detail (she seriously hot glued a million tiny rocks onto a tree for another event I saw!) She genuinely takes her time to get to know you, your likes and dislikes, what you envision and she runs with it. Lauren managed to transform my parents back yard North Carolina themed oasis to a country haven for our engagement party, had the most stunning location and theme for a wine cellar bridal shower, flipped a Wildwood shore house into a mini-Dublin for my Irishfest BASHolorette, then topped it all off with making our dream a reality with our rustic barn wedding. I cannot even tell you how many compliments I have received on every single event, even months after the fact I still am told that my shower & wedding were the parties of the year, and I genuinely believe it! Hiring Lauren was hands down the best and EASIEST decision I ever made for our wedding, having that peace of mind & creative mind for our events truly made a huge difference!

My husband and I hired her for our wedding reception, I was on a really small budget and she worked with us. Christine is so nice when you get to meet her and very professional. She helped us create a very beautiful memory in my back yard and all my guests had a great time. And I would hire her again in the near future!!

Sharrona did an amazing job planning my wedding reception. I could not ask for a better event coordinator. She explained everything clearly and honestly in regards to the look I was going for and my budget. She found a way to make all of my ideas come together tastefully. She took away the stress of my trying to plan my own wedding. I was extremely overwhelmed when I first started planning but after meeting Sharrona she took all of my anxiety away. I plan to utilize her services again in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
