As everyone knows, guests always remember the meal at a wedding. Our wedding meal was over the top outstanding. Jen and her fantastic team couldn't have been any more efficient, professional, engaging and in a word "perfect". We would highly recommend them. We were so fortunate that she was available to cater this event for us, a true blessing.

Sara and her staff did an absolutely fantastic job catering our wedding in late July, 2016. The event was at a small horse farm in Rehoboth, MA, and Sara planned a menu that perfectly reflected the verdant, warm and playful atmosphere of the venue. Throughout the planning process, she and her staff were swift to respond to any questions we had and were very transparent about all of the costs involved. They were incredibly friendly and professional, reflecting a true pride in their work. The event itself went flawlessly and all the guests we talked to (we had about 150) really enjoyed their meals and the buffet service was well run. In short, the food was excellent and the customer service, friendliness and overall professionalism were superb. I highly recommend hiring Sara and her crew to cater any special event!

I met Daniel for catering for my wedding. He was the only caterer who came to my venue right off the bat to view how everything would work. He also came to my home and put together a fabulous tasting with enough leftovers for us to enjoy in days after. Daniel was very willing to work with in our budget and was very professional, warm and friendly I would highly recommend Daniel and will be contacting him for any future altering needs.

John and his team were very professional!! They performed duties beyond their scope because my event planner wasn't doing her job. They all-in-all were instrumental at making sure my guests, myself and husband were well taken care of, from bringing water and a platter of food out to us when pictures were being taken, communicating with our DJ in a professional manner which in turn prompted my DJ to make a public announcement on how spectacular J & L Catering was. If I hadn't mentioned, the food was fantastic. I had great reviews from my family and friends for days/weeks. I would whole heartedly recommend John of J & L Caterers for all weddings.

William and his team catered our wedding of about 100 people and I would highly reccomend him! William truly went above and beyond both with his amazing food and constantly offering to help make things easier on us as we got closer to our wedding. The food and presentation was absolutely amazing! Even our vendors who have eaten at countless weddings raved about the food. William also surprised us with some special treats for my husband and his groomsmen and a great display for our late night pretzel bar. William was so much fun and easy to work with and I really can't say enough about how delicious the food was!

Planning a destination wedding in Newport, RI in 6 months while living hundreds of miles away, working full time, moving once cross-country, finding a new job, starting a new job, etc, etc, is no easy task, even with a wedding planner! With everything going on in my life, plus the short timeframe (the wedding date we selected was 6 months out from the day we secured the venue), and the fact that I am a perfectionist, I knew I was going to need help. I was lucky enough to come across SYB Event Planning while on Thumbtack. I interviewed a few companies and ended up selecting SYB because Soraya, the owner, and I really clicked while talking on the phone. While I wasn't necessarily looking for a cultural wedding, I knew she would understand some of the nuances with our families because my husband and I come from different cultural backgrounds. Soraya specializes in taking the time to understand different cultures and she goes out of her way to embed as much or as little as you want of you or your partner's culture into your wedding. I'm so glad I had Soraya for the entire wedding planning process and for the day of the wedding. Our wedding was absolutely beautiful and totally exceeded my expectations (this is a perfectionist speaking...just for some perspective). I don't think that could have been possible without having Soraya helping along the way. She challenged me to think about things I would have never thought of and took care of all the details. She went above and beyond to make sure the wedding was as successful as it could be. She even drove over 90 miles each way to get us a cute favor that we really wanted for our guests...without hesitating! I didn't even ask her, but when she heard me talking about what I would like to do if the place was closer, she just jumped in and said she would take care of it. I'm so thankful for everything Soraya did to make our special day a success and would highly recommend her to anyone trying to plan a wedding.

The foodie in me was wowed by Steve, yet again! He has cooked for us before, we loved him and his food so much that we had him back again. He cooked a brilliantly planned Mexican meal for four. The meal was creative, fresh (garden vegetables picked that day!) and so TASTY. It was the best taco I’ve ever had, and I’ve had LOTS of tacos from all over the world. Also the man can multitask!!!! He’s was teaching me how to make margaritas (that were delicious) while plating our meal and entertaining our guests! Also he does a fabulous job of clean up and packed up all the left overs for us. HIGHLY recommend! We love him so much we are having him cook for our wedding shower!!!

Shamia provided a delicious buffet for my son's wedding brunch for 15 people. She even took the time to transfer additional food onto her serving platters to make everything look just right. People loved the food, which included beef tenderloin with horseradish sauce, an arugula, goat cheese and pear salad, a roasted sweet potato and mango salad, two kinds of delicious frittatas (which the bride said were the best she had ever tasted), and potatoes au gratin. She also prepared a two-layer green-tea cake with buttercream and coconut frosting that was perfection. She brought a lovely server, Paula, with her to handle all the details of prepping, keeping things fresh, and cleaning up. We had mountains of leftovers, and everyone was delighted.

There aren't enough stars in the land of internet rating to give to Tony and his team at Ambrosia Events & Catering. I hired Tony to cater a client's wedding. From the very start, Tony listened to the client's needs, worked with me to create a proposal that not only impressed the clients but also excited (yes, excited) about their wedding menu. Being an event planner with clients who were very much making last minute decisions, and a venue with peculiar and strict rules, I cannot express how much I appreciated Tony's quick response and excellent communication, as well as his professional experience and advice. Tony never seemed overwhelmed or frustrated, and he always had a reasonable solution. Tony paid attention to every detail that we had planned into the wedding and styled his presentation to complement the linen selections and overall feel of the wedding. My only wish is that I could get all my clients to hire Ambrosia Events & Catering.

Recently, I planned a wedding in just a month. Stressed, I turned to Shana/The Laughing Pickle for catering expertise. What we received was far beyond my (high) expectations. Her personality, willingness to meet, accommodating spirit and cheerfulness made a stressed time a pleasant experience. The presentation of the food was beautiful, tasteful and classy--but I already knew that was a trademark. What I didn't know was that she is the best at what she does and I didn't have to worry about ANYTHING. The variety of her menu leaves nothing to be desired. She arrived with a pre-planned menu which was perfect--I also didn't know HOW DELICIOUS everything would be. What do you usually forget about a wedding? You normally don't remember what you ate at the event. But if 'The Laughing Pickle' caters, you will remember!!! It was beyond delicious and guests are STILL talking about how good it was. As one guest stated..."I want to have an event so I can use this catering service". HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

        • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
        • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
        • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
        • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
        • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
        • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

        • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
        • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
        • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
        • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
        • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
