We needed our roof and 3 skylights replaced on our house and 2 sheds so we used Thumbtack for the first time because we are new to the area and didn't know any contractors. Sean got back to us very quickly and came out the following Saturday to look at the job and give us quote. I also made 2 other appts. Sean was very pleasant and accommodating on the phone. Sean was on time for our appointment and was very thorough explaining the details of the job and the products that they offered. He gave us a quote and we hired him that very day at the end of the meeting. We were very comfortable with Sean and the quote was very reasonable. We also called and cancelled the other company that was coming that afternoon. The morning the work was to begin, P.J. (Supervisor) was early and extremely nice. He explained all that would take place during the day and answered every question I had in detail. The dumpster was soon after delivered and then the crew arrived and work began. The crew as well as P.J. were extremely efficient and took no breaks until they were done with the roofing and before the cleanup. (Just enough time to grab a quick bite to eat then back to work) They were very fast and the work was of high quality. They completed all of the work as quoted including all of the waterproofing and flashing replacement and great new skylights. The cleanup was great too! The crew left nothing behind, not even a nail or piece of old roofing. ANYWHERE! Sean came back to complete the inside trim work of the skylights and I was very pleased with his skills as a finish carpenter as well. I have used many contractors including roofers and I was totally happy and comfortable with Sean, P.J. and the crew of Stormworks and would not hesitate in recommending and or hiring them again. GREAT JOB!! I will also use Thumbtack again.

I hired H&R to do a garage roof. Ray was very responsive to my inquiry. He came right over and gave me a rough estimate as to what it would cost to replace my roof. He also made me aware of the potential extras that I might incur once they start opening things up. I ended up hiring Ray because other roofers would simply give me the drive by estimate. I needed much more than that as I had some wood rot that could only be seen from the inside of the garage. Fast forward....Ray and his team scheduled the job in a week and the job was done in one day. I was very happy with the outcome. The job was done professionally and meticulously. I could probably have found someone to do it cheaper but not for the quality that H&R provides. I am very happy with the outcome!! I will definitely hire Ray and his team again and/or pass his info along to the next person who needs a roof.

Bobby gave me no BS and clearly walked through what needed to be done and what definitely did not, something the other roofers I spoke with didn't take the time to do. The price was extremely reasonable and he completed the work in the amount of time estimated. Time will tell if there are any problems, but if so I wouldn't hesitate to call RC Roofing again.

Joan D. from Attleboro, MA. I had attic mold. I called Steven with New England Property Services Group after experiences with 2 roofers and 2 mold companies. Both roofers wanted to remove half of my roof and replace it. Both mold companies sent young representatives, kind, but without much experience. Their job was to get the contract signed, they showed pictures from previous jobs the company contracted with, but were not able to adequately answer my questions. Steven was the third mold person to come to our home. He was the only one who was happy to have us follow him into the attic so he could better explain the possible causes of the mold and how to satisfactory treat the attic. He was never in a hurry, gave us all the time to answer all of our concerns. His team arrived on time, cleaned up when finished and overall did a good job. Recently, I was having a bathroom remodeled and with demolition, mold was found on an outside wall. I called Steve, he came the next day to evaluate and treat. Very satisfied with New England Property Services.

We knew from the first time we met Jeff he was the contractor we wanted to get the job done. From the first time we met Jeff to get a quote about our roof he was nothing but honest, and very detailed about exactly what he would be doing to get our roof back to brand new. Him And his crew showed up at exactly 7:00 sharp yesterday to start on our roof. They were extremely organized, professional, and honest. Anytime we had questions along the way they didn’t stop to hesitate and answer them for us and always kept our best interest at heart when it came to getting our roof done right. We have had some horror story experiences in the past when it came to hiring other contractors for home improvement work. But JPV Roofing turned that right around for us in so many ways. If you are in need of a new roof, please take the tome to give Jeff a call. I promise you he will not disappoint and you will definitely be choosing him for all your roofing needs!

We needed a replacement shingle roof, and also wanted soffit vents placed and gutter guards installed. Romulo and his crew did an excellent job with all of the tasks...they were quick, efficient, and relatively quiet, the work site was cleaned thoroughly, and the finished product looked great. In addition, Laryssa in the front office was extremely helpful through the entire process. If you are looking for a roofer, hire this company!

After receiving three appraisals for a roof replacement Squire Roofing, Andrew (Drew) Oehler, owner, got back to me within a few days. His appraisal was in the ballpark and I had (word of mouth) heard that his company was very reputable. I rent this house and worked with Tracy Tomaselli, owner, to select a roofer. We agreed on Drew. Once the deposit was made Drew came by to say that a dumpster would be delivered that morning. And that materials would also be delivered by noon that same day. Both were delivered that same morning. Drew also explained that his crew would be starting at 8:00 am Saturday and work two days to complete the job. He questioned if 8:00 am was too early. (it wasn't) At exactly 8:00 am the crew showed up. I went out to introduce myself to the foreman which I found was very polite, knowledgeable, and personable. I spoke to him during the day to ask if there were any problems (ex: plywood warped, any rotting etc), there was nothing but the replacement of the entire roof, no issues or concerns. The first day they finished one side and said they'd be back the next. Unfortunately, it rained on Sunday, but Monday at 8:00 am the crew was back and proceeded to complete the job, (the entire roof, the flashing to the chimney and a small roof over the kitchen addition.) During these two days Drew visited and spoke to the foreman and also stopped in the ask me if everything was okay? I had absolutely no concerns. At the finish of the job the crew cleaned up the entire yard like it had never happened!! Immaculate! I couldn't find a nail or any part of any of the tiles. Drew was very on top of his crew and my concerns (which there weren't any). I would give this contractor a 10 or A+ and highly recommend him to anyone. Sincerely, Linda L. Eric was extremely knowledgeable about my minor roofing issues. His estimate of amount of work needed was accurate and his price was very reasonable for my small project. He came on time both to review my project and to do the job. Eric worked diligently and nonstop on the project until it was done. He cleaned up all of debris afterwards and hulled it away. I really appreciate his expertise, workmanship, and professionalism. He’s a great roofer. I will definitely hire him again if I have another roofing job. Thanks Eric, my flashing looks great.

We have many commercial buildings with varying Roof Systems. Northeast was able to restore some of our roofs as well as complete an ongoing maintenance program on all our Roof Systems. Northeast is very professional and showed up when promised. The quality of the work by far exceeds all other roofers that we have been using for the last 30 years. It's nice to speak with knowledgeable professionals who promised results and then deliver those results time and time again. As long as we keep purchasing buildings, Northeast will always do the pre inspection and evaluations for us. Once we purchase the buildings Northeast will be able to repair and restore our building roofs. As a building owner group, it is certainly nice to have a roofing company that we can rely on. Northeast has made our life for all of our building managers so much more enjoyable. It's really wonderful to be able to rely upon Northeast and that they can service our roofing needs.

I hired Secure Roofing to fix a problem around my chimmey. I had a number of roofers come to look at the problem, no one was willing to take on my problem. Then Mike, from Secure was recomended. He came out at the sheduled time to look at my roof. He recomended that the chimmey needed to be refinnished and new flashing installed. The workers from Secure set up the equipment, and worked in a very professional manner. They completed the job within the time table that Mike had worked out with me. They left my house and property cleaner than they found it. The workmanship was outstanding. We had the worst weather in years, since the work was completed and we haven't had a drop of water since he finnished. I would highly recomend Secure Roofing.

Bruce Wheeler did two jobs for us. He painted our interior and exterior of our primary residence in Milton. His work was on time and there were not any overruns. His communication was outstanding. Always letting us know ahead of time when they would be working. We have a family place in Falmouth as well. It was in need of a new roof and garage. His estimates beat local roofers and the quality of the job was excellent. Excellent communication and his estimates were always on. I would highly recommend him to my friends and family..

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

    • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

    • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
      • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
    • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
    • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
    • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
    • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
    • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
