What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. I hired Ralph for the goal of gaining some weight and learning the tips of not injuring myself while training. Ralph's training started with a information/Starbucks session to understand you goals, your body and shares his training method. During the trainings, Ralph always comes prepared on time, with list of exercises tailored for you. He teaches you the drills and answers questions before actually doing a particular exercise. He also shares free tips and research papers from time to time that pertain to training, keeping the right posture at work and diets. At this moment my Chinese martial arts training demands most of my training time. I would use Ralph's help again when needed in the future. I would also recommend you to have a try!

Beau keeps up with scheduling promptly and consistently, is flexible and understanding. The online app Beau has set up allows him to create personalized workouts that can be followed on your own outside of training sessions, it is a huge help in keeping up the progress. In the past, I have been unable to keep up with workouts on my own, not because of a lack of motivation but because I can't remember the exercises well enough, Beau uploads videos with each exercise to help you walk through your circuits outside of his additional in-person training. I have such an issue rating Beau as a personal trainer. He is a lifestyle health changer. I can't think of a term right now. When I think of a personal trainer, I think of the 50 minutes in a gym, some yelling in lieu of encouragement, maybe something condescending when you don't reach a goal. This is not Beau's method. Beau teaches life changes, from nutrition to exercise to overall mental well being. I did the 4 month program and although I failed at reaching some of my goals this was not because of Beau. I excelled in nutrition and learned so much but, exsercise I didn't complete as well as I thought I would. Again, this was all me, not Beau. Beau, has and will continue to be encouraging and helpful. He cares about long term life goals, not the pump you up method of personal training. I can't say enough good things about his program.

I posted on Thumbtack looking for a personal trainer, and Zach sent me a message asking if I would be interested in working out with him. We did a free trial session together and I have been using him ever since (almost 3 months). I recently got engaged this year, and I want to make sure that I look my best for the big day. I wanted to look more toned, be able to run a half marathon, and live a healthier lifestyle and be more active. I also have a history of asthma, so he made sure to watch out for that during our workouts. Zach set up a program customized for me and my goals, and then we went to work. I work out once a week with him, and do a variety of cardio, strength training, and balance exercises during our time together. He also writes out additional exercises to complete during the week as well, so I keep myself accountable. He is also very flexible on different workout times throughout the week, so if something comes up, we can change it easily to fit out schedules. When I started working out, I weighed between 150-145. I am down to 135 and have lost three inches around my waist, as well as other target areas. Zach has been a great personal trainer for me and I will continue to use him.

We needed a flexible and creative trainer to help us work out at home after our 6 month old son went to bed. Keep in mind, we only have a couple of yoga mats, a few sets of dumbbells, and an overly friendly dog. No problem at all for Christopher- he came up with hard hour-long workouts for us to do in our living room, and made sure to walk us through exercise series we could use for workouts throughout the week. He even sent accountability texts to make sure we were doing the workouts between sessions and to check-in on how we were feeling. The workouts were hard, but also super fun- Christopher is very clearly knowledgeable about fitness and physical training, and he also has a great sense of humor. He was flexible with finding times for sessions that worked around our work and baby schedules. And he didn't mind the playful dog jumping across the room while he worked us out. Christopher is fairly new to Austin, which I consider to be a temporary advantage- I'd bet he'll have a very full clientele list in no time. Do yourself a favor and book him now while he still has availability!
