Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does computer repair cost?

The cost to fix your computer or laptop will depend on the extent of the repair and the labor rates in your area. For example, a repair service may charge $100 to fix virus or malware issues or $320 to fix a cracked or damaged screen. On average, computer repair technicians charge $60/hour for their services. However, hourly rates can range from $45-$90

To find out exactly how much it will cost to fix your desktop, laptop, Apple or PC computer, request cost estimates from computer repair specialists near you.

Who can fix my computer?

If your computer needs repairs, hire a technician who has experience with your computer’s model and brand. Ideally, the pro you choose should have certifications, training and/or a degree in a related field.

Look for top-rated, qualified computer repair services in your area on Thumbtack.

Is it worth replacing the motherboard on a laptop?

If your laptop’s motherboard was damaged by physical impact, liquid, heat or electrical damage, you may need to replace it or buy a new computer. You should consult computer repair experts near you to determine if replacing your laptop’s motherboard is worth the cost. Compare the price quotes you receive with new laptop prices, and decide which option is the most cost-effective.

What should I do before sending a computer in for repairs?

Before you send your computer to a technician to fix it, take the following precautions:

  • Make sure you hire a reputable, top-rated professional to handle the repairs. Look at past photos of work they’ve completed and read their customer reviews on Thumbtack.
  • Back-up your data. To ensure you don’t lose the data on your computer, back-up your files to an external hard drive.
  • Ensure you have access to important information. If you need to access certain files or information from your computer, make sure you can access that information through a cloud storage system or external drive.
  • Erase sensitive information. If you have files (documents, photos, etc.) that contain sensitive information about your finances, accounts, passwords, etc., delete them before you bring your computer to a repair shop.
  • Log out of your accounts. Make sure you’re logged out of your bank, social media and other accounts.

How many years does a laptop last?

Depending on its quality, age, condition and maintenance, a laptop may last only a few years or up to seven years. Of course, your laptop may last longer or shorter depending on how well you take care of it. If you think your laptop needs repairs, don’t procrastinate — hire a technician to look at it before the damage becomes irreparable.

Is it worth fixing a computer?

It depends. If the damage is severe, you might be better off buying a new computer than spending hundreds (or thousands) of dollars on repairs. Always get price quotes from a few computer repair services near you, and compare those estimates to desktop and laptop prices. If it's cheaper to fix your computer,  consider doing so. But if it's cheaper to buy a new device, that's probably your best option.

Should I repair or replace my computer?

To determine if you should replace or repair your computer, consider the following:

  • Has your warranty expired?
  • Is your computer old and out of date?
  • Is the cost to fix your computer 50% or more of the cost of replacing it?
  • Before it broke, was your computer working slowly and inefficiently?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, it’s probably time to replace your computer. When in doubt, consult a technician for their expert opinion.

Don repaired two laptops for me. He picked 'em up and delivered them. Demonstrated they worked, presented a professional invoice, itemized for each computer. He offered a backup service, which I accepted. In short he did everything I asked, honored his quotes and made suggestions for better utilization along the way. He communicated religiously throughout the repairs. This guy is now my go-to computer repair person.

There is not one thing I would change about Jon’s performance. As someone who knows little about computers I never felt stupid. He was so professional with the perfect blend of showing that I was working with a person. Just like having a conversation with a friend. I waited until I had a chance to work on the repaired/updated computer before I wrote this review. I now have Jon’s information in my contacts. He is my go-to computer guy from now on.

Norman was able to diagnose and remedy my computer issues. It did take a few days longer than he first thought but he called to let me know that. He met me at a convenient location to pick up the laptop so I didn't have to make the drive to Addison. So glad to get my computer repaired and running well for a fair price.

They diagnosed the problem quickly and had it repaired in no time at a very reasonable price. The last shop I'd taken it to (three different times) couldn't tell me what was wrong and charged me double what Computer Junction charged. I'll be back! Glad I found them! Sam

What a fantastic guy! When he found the computer could not be fixed, he thought to check if it was under any warranty. Sure enough it had an extended warranty and called to get the trouble ticket opened. Laptop will now get a full evaluation and repair. Did not even charge me for all the time he took with me to get the best solution! I recommend Don.as your first choice for getting the best resolution to your computer problem. I even made a new great friend.

My computer is very old and I was afraid it might not be repairable. Norman was, of course knowledgeable, but not all techs can adjust so easily to the customer's level of knowledge. I felt very comfortable asking questions and he made sure I understood everything he told me - that's a great service. I highly recommend him, and I will call on him again.

I couldn’t be more pleased with the assistance I received from Mark solving my laptop repair dilemmas. He recovered my lost data, transferred it to another machine, repaired my laptop, replaced it’s hard drive and loaded an upgraded OS so I could continue to use it going forward. He did the work in my home, on the day I asked. He was sensitive to issues of data protection as well as COVID care. I would recommend Mark to anyone needing computer or network help and I’ll be sure to call him again when the need arises. Thanks Mark!

My computer went into the infamous automatic repair loop and I tried everything the Internet had. Eventually I gave up and looked for help. I chose Norman not because of his outstanding reviews and professionalism compared to the other computer pros but because he had a reasonable price. $75 initial charge, was the price he gave me and I didn’t think it would need to change. Once I met him he came across as a hustler rather than a expert so I was very skeptical about giving him my machine but I was anxious to get it up and running. Two days passed and he said my OS became corrupted and it’ll take a little longer than expected and that the price jumped from $75 to $150. Honestly I was upset about the price, why you may ask? Because for that same price of $150 other more professional people were charging for the whole repair not a “initial charge” but for the whole thing. I put my feeling aside and just told him ok. 8 days it took him to fix it, and i was eager to get it back. He told me to come to his “shop” and to my suspicion the shop wasn’t a shop, and my theory of him being a hustler rather than a professional came true. Anyways he did as he promised. My PC is fixed and running as usual and he managed to recover everything in my main drive ( sadly my other two drives became dead as he said ). I can not recommend Norman nor can I discourage people from calling him up for this very reason. I have no problem with people trying to hustle and make a living, I do however have a problem with hustlers charging expert level prices. I wouldn’t of had a problem with the price if he would of shown a more professional character because at the end of the day, if I’m giving you my PC to fix i am trusting you with my work and personal data, I’m sure anybody can understand.
