Steve was excellent!! Prior to, I had a handyman and a professional plumber attempt to install my kitchen faucet with no success (One even told me I needed to get my granite and sink replaced). Steve showed up on time and figured out the trick to install the faucet in a tight/narrow space with ease. I appreciate his expertise and will definitely use him for any future handyman/plumbing projects. My faucet looks beautiful!!!

Sergio replaced 3 toilets and installed a sink and faucets for me. He had to go to the store and buy parts as the valves and flanges were broken or in terrible shape. He explained each step and offered us options . He also looked at a few other issues we have and offered options on those. He was knowledgeable and responsive to our questions and we will hire him again to take care of other plumbing needs.

The problem with home repairs is that they don't always go as scheduled. The good news is mine was not an emergency and I was willing to work with Jason. Jason called, let me know what was happening on his current job and that he was running behind. We agreed to reschedule. He showed up late the next day. In his favor, he did call me and let know what was happening and the reason for delay. He did make it to house, found the problem with my plumbing and was on his way in 30 minutes. I have no issues with hiring him again if and when needed. Sad part is, even though he was done in 30 minutes he was still running behind for his last job of the day. Told him I would keep his number on file for future use if he was ok with it. He was. Will not hesitate to call him again if needed.

Joel and his team did an outstanding job on our upstairs bathroom tub/shower after it leaked behind the tile. After tearing out the old tile, redoing the plumbing and re-tiling it, it looks like a new bathroom! We are so happy with the results! I highly recommend HandyJoe / Joel.

Jason was able to install the new faucet, which we primarily got to hookup a special water machine. We were not able to get it to connect to the new faucet. So, he went to a plumbing store nearby to try to find an additional part we needed (which they didn’t have). Since we couldn’t get it to work, he removed the new faucet and reinstalled the old faucet. Would definitely hire again, he went above and beyond!

I had a small bathroom remodeled, including some plumbing using PEX, a shower insert, some hardee backer board and tile work. Johnathan is a trustworthy, friendly, hard working man. He has real world knowledge of everything needed to do the work. His integrity showed as he advised how to solve problems, suggesting solutions that required more work on his part, but that turned out to be correct. His work was beautiful - everything we wanted. And his price was more than fair.

Y&J Constructions has done several repairs for me including fixing broken windows, replacing an exhaust fan, plumbing, electrical and sheetrock repair, and installing an attic ladder. Dionni is wonderful!! He worked around my schedule to make it more convenient for me and completed the jobs quickly. One of the things that stood out to me most is how he took pride in keeping the work area so clean. I've had contractors come out before and had to clean up after they left. Not the case here!! I also like that the owner came out twice to meet me and to make sure I was happy with the work. EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! I will definitely use Y&J Construction again for future projects and HIGHLY recommend them. You won't be disappointed!!

I needed my house made ready for sale. Mitchell painted, changed out my plumbing and light fixtures, fixed a few windows and tilted the kitchen. If I were still in Texas I'd use him again. But I do recommend him to my friends back home.

Bill Wood installed our Hot Water heater. Everything about this process was exceptional from making the appointment to the completion of the project. The appointment was timely, Bill was on time for the appointment, work was done in a timely manner, the work was excellent and the price very reasonable. I would not hesitate to call Bill for future work or to recommend him to others. As a Realtor, I am happy to have him as my primary plumbing vendor and will gladly refer others to him. Thanks Bill for a GREAT experience!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
