What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Will is a great trainer. I have been training with will from past 3 months and I see great results. He understands the needs of his clients very well and prepares triainig curriculum accordingly. Darren has been my personal trainer for about 10 months now and I am so grateful that my wife discovered his profile on Thumbtack. I wholeheartedly endorse him for anyone considering embarking on a new fitness goal or even for seasoned athletes looking for a jolt if their existing routine has gotten stale. Darren not only excels in the physical aspect of training, but he also brings a balanced mental component to our sessions. As anyone can attest who's recently started to workout after a long layoff, the hardest part is starting. What they also don't tell you is that maintaining your workouts is probably the next hardest hurdle to tackle. But that's where Darren really shines. Under Darren's tutelage, I've become accountable to myself and I really look forward to my sessions to see what new exercises we'll incorporate or to try and beat my weightlifting bests. I would classify Darren's workout management as 'adaptive'; that is, he can take what he's given in terms of available equipment, or if the gym is too crowded on a given day, and craft a workout routine that is challenging and never boring (he takes what's he's given and makes lemonade from lemons). I think that boredom is responsible for more broken fitness promises than any other factor. With Darren as my trainer, I've never been bored and almost a year later I don't think we've ever repeated a workout! With Darren as my trainer I've been steadily increasing my strength gains while steadily shedding excess weight and improving my cardio fitness. Darren also provides nutritional counseling, rehabilitative training, and he will travel to your home or business for your workout needs. I reached out to Thumbtack because I was finally ready to get motivated with my health and fitness. For too long I’ve been unfit and overweight and knew I didn’t have the knowledge nor understanding of fitness to do this alone so set out to find a personal trainer. One of the other reasons was I was interested in lifting heavy weights (I’d read a lot about it but didn’t have the knowledge or courage to start). I received numerous responses but choose Max for his willingness to tailor his training to my requirements whilst demonstrating a great knowledge for fitness and nutrition in general. I’ve been training with Max 3 times a week for almost 5 months now and I’ve lost both inches and lbs and noticed a difference in my overall health. When I’ve not been able to attend my sessions due to vacation, Max has given me exercises to continue with whilst I’m away. Most recently Max has been teaching me more and more about nutrition, which has certainly been an eye opener when reviewing my own diet.

I highly recommend Akshay for a personal trainer. He is flexible and always willing to work with my schedule. At the end of a challenging day at work, my training sessions with Akshay are a great mental and physical relief and he somehow manages to pull energy out of me so I make it through the session. Akshay is professional, fun to work with, and has an easy to get along with personality. Another note worthy attribute is he is well-educated and is happy explain the nerdy physiological science that goes along with the training. As a former science major myslef, nerdy explanations are welcome. In fact, one might argue the nerdier the explanation the better. Ashleigh was chosen from a bundle of personal trainers to be our official trainer for our Real Women, Real Results Houston weight loss contest for I-REMOVE. She did wonderfully! Each of the ladies she worked with had so many amazing and great things to say about her too. All together they lost 48lbs across 4 ladies and that is wonderful! She worked with them on an individual basis and even put together a home routine for one contestant that couldn't make sessions. She did everything in her ability to help these ladies succeed and worked with various levels of fitness too. Ashleigh has even helped our company (InQpharm North America) internally by giving our office material for blogs, and helping us to come up with some in office exercises we can do to stay moving all day. CJ is not only my trainer after the last 6 months that we have been associated but also we have become best friends. He is someone who will get to know you and your personal fitness goals. Once that is done, he invests time in getting to know how driven you are to get there and makes a realistic plan unlike other trainers/pros (no offence but most of them try and teach you what they did and how they succeeded - sorry, but fitness is not a one solution fits all regime). I was extremely impressed that he respected my work schedule and would also understand if there were situations when I could not make it for the scheduled session and we rescheduled. Given that I travel a lot for work, we communicated a lot and CJ helped me understand how I can work out even from my hotel room and made me understand ratios and nutrition. This guy is amazing and even if I had a tough day I would look forward to sweating it out in the gym with him or go work out outside (ya, he doesn't just believe in working out in the gym but also go running, working out etc in parks outside weather permitting). Once, I had an ankle injury during a soccer game after work and he never pushed me to train or take my sessions within the scheduled time period. So, he is a professional but doesn't just live by the rule book. Having said all of this, CJ, is extremely professional and punctual. He is also very realistic and straightforward and will go out of his way to ensure that at the end of the day you are getting more than your money's worth. He knows how to kick your butt too so if you need a trainer actually no if you need a best friend to go work out with and crush your fitness goals then sign up for sessions with CJ. P.S. I have lost 12 pounds in about the last 6 months in a healthy manner and gained muscle and developed stamina. Quantitative results; if you care for them :)

I've always been in "okay" shape, but this year, I wanted to take it to the next level by really focusing on my weak areas, and become more consistent with my workouts. I sought the help of CJ, and from meeting with him for my first consultation, I knew that I wanted to work with him. CJ is an amazing personal trainer, and I don't think that this review will do him justice but here it goes: From day one, he listened to me about what my fitness goals were, and created a personalized plan to help me reach those goals. We do a combination of HIIT and weight workouts, and he creates workouts for me to do on my own for the days that we don't meet up. He follows up with me even on the days that I don't meet, and definitely keeps me accountable for working hard throughout the week. After a month of working with him, I can already see a significant improvement in my strength, endurance, and overall wellness/energy levels. CJ is passionate about what he does, and goes the extra mile for his clients. If you are looking for a trainer that puts a lot of attention and focus into each and every session, you've found him!
