After having granite installed in my kitchen, I needed the plumbing installed in my new sink, the disposal hooked up and the new faucet installed. Mike did a great job, cleaned up after himself and arrived on time! I will definitely be calling him again.

I bought a gas oven from an online retailer and needed to find someone who would install it locally. Juan Ornelas bid on the job saying he needed more information, and then coordinated with me to find a time to look over the job. He made sure it would fit before I ordered the oven. Then he gave me a quote that was very reasonable--much less than what install.com would have charged. When the oven was delivered, Juan said he could be there the very next morning to install it. He brought another guy, and they had it hooked up in a short time. What helped me out a ton is that they did some carpentry to fill a hole in the floor that would have let vermin into the house. I know Sears or Lowes installers wouldn't have done that, and I would have had to find a carpenter. So all in all I was super pleased with Juan Ornelas and would recommend him highly. I now have a handyman for small jobs and will call on him again soon.

I contacted Clint for a job that our company needed assistance with in his area. I discovered that he was NWFA certified - which is a qualification we look for when establishing a business relationship with professionals in the wood flooring industry. Not only did Clint respond to my request in a timely manner, but he was easy to communicate with and understood what our needs were. The job he helped with required a professional with quite a bit of experience working with master oil and possessing a high level of attention to detail. The quality of his work made the homeowner a happy and satisfied customer. I recommend Clint and will happily contact him again for future needs.

The best floor experience EVER! Michael helped me match a previously laid wood floor. He laid a hallway, bedroom and closet in wood flooring to match a previously laid living room. He was so detail oriented. His work is so much better than the other company's which he was matching. I wish I'd known about him years ago when I put in my first wood floor.

Mike is awesome! His quality of work is unsurpassed. He installed laminate flooring on my second floor and I could not be happier with how great it looks. I would recommend him to everyone and have already given his number out to friends. Thank you Mike so much for the time you put in and for making my home beautiful. Mike takes the time to talk to you and fully explain the process so that you don't feel you're getting taken advantage of like other contractors make you feel.

The crew did a great job, and went above and beyond! In fact, they were able to install engineered wood flooring on a particle board sub-flooring (pier & beam house)...something installers for a home improvement store said they would NOT tackle. I would highly recommend MP for wood floor installation in your home!

Excellent work. Felt like she cared about my home looking the best it could look. It’s more than a job to them. They want the customer to be happy and proud of their home. I truly appreciated how they got my home on their schedule as soon as they could and did a fantastic job matching my previous tile job from years before. They completed the final tile flooring that was needed after a kitchen remodel. Excellent stars all the way. You will not be disappointed when hiring them for your tile work!

Rey and his team did a great job painting the inside and outside of our house even when I added extra rooms at the last minute. They repaired siding and drywall where needed making the repairs unnoticeable. They washed the cabinets down before painting them and installed new hardware. They even came back to paint the new baseboards after we had new flooring installed. They were on time, polite, professional, cleaned up when they were done and reasonably priced. We would hire them again if we needed work done.

Roberto did all the flooring in my house. 95% laminate, 5% tile. Everything came out great! We had an amazing experience working with Roberto, he was very professional, available at all times, and willing to help us with every question we had. He completed the work on time, and he delivered everything we had originally agreed on and more! I definately recommend working with him. I also bought the laminate from him, and everyone that comes to my place loves it. He did a great job.

The quality of the work is good. They worked quickly, but as time passed once they were done I started to notice maybe they worked too quickly. Not bad things, but small like the precision of cuts for T-molding around fireplace and baseboards uneven, not something to see on a quick first glance. When moving items around the house, they made small scuffed a few items. Also, I understand they arent a cleaning company but cleaning after yourself is a big thing. I had paint on the kitchen floor and table when no work was done on the kitchen, wood chippings or something in the blinds and window seal. Probably would be 5 stars if not for those things.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
