Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

Emanuel Movers, Inc were the best movers I have ever hired. At first I contacted them about moving my Baby Grand. I wanted that done first. When I saw how perfectly they did that, I canceled the house movers I had booked and turned the job to Emanuel. Need a job well done....call Emanuel !

Great experience. Movers were quick and efficient, and managed to get an entire four bedroom house moved, including the belongings we had stored at a different address, in one day. The gentlemen moving us were polite, and did their best to put our belongings in the correct rooms, despite the odd mixture of packed boxes. Our electronics were safely wrapped and delivered, and our furniture was transported without anything breaking. I would absolutely recommend them to anyone considering hiring a moving company.

Justin went out of his way in a time crunch to get my table moved from house to house on my last day to move it out. He didn't have time to re-felt it or replace the banks that day, but he got it moved in my moment of need, and then came back the next business day to finish the job, and he did amazing! My table has never looked better!

Godfrey and his team wasnt good they were fing AWESOME. Extremely professional. His crew were laughing and hung fun moving the stuff. It would have taking me and my friends 2 days to move they did in 4 hours. He organized the storage and his truck to make sure how it will fit in there. He is like a an offensive coordinator drawing up plays. We are using him again in 2 weeks when we move in to new house. He accepts cash or Venmo. Takes 2 seconds to pay.

Movers were very prompt and professional, started working right away and were very careful with my furniture. They wrapped what needed wrapping and worked fast but careful. Unloaded furniture where I wanted. It. It cost me more then I expected, but I didn't realize I had so much to move. It would be safer for costumers if you had a flat rate.

I had a very pleasant experience with this moving company. The owner and his workers were very polite, professional, and personable. They called me about an hour prior to arrival to let me know the status of their arrival, they were on time, they were very careful in handling my furniture, and the price quoted did not change. I will use them again, and I will recommend them to others. Great job Emanuel Movers!

Well for starters, the movers showed early. Then they took very good care of all our furniture especially when they got to out new house where the painters had just finished painting the trim and not one spot on the house. Thank you Texan Movers I will refer you to everyone I know that needs a great service. Special thanks to Santos and his crew for taking good care of everything.

Godfrey and his assistant arrived on time and after introducing themselves went to work right away wrapping my items in moving blankets and securing with shrink wrap. After delivering the items to their address he called to give me a status update on the delivery. Will use this company again. T. Neal

The movers were great time wise and willing to go to several locations. However, they damaged furniture and when I called to speak with the manager I was told I would get a call back. After several tries to reach the manager I was unsuccessful and never got a call back. If you like your furniture more than time and money go with someone else.
