I have known Terry for almost 4 years and he knows his stuff! He is incredibly knowledgeable about personal training and massage therapy. All trainers and massage therapists should understand how your body works like he does! I am in the best shape of my life thanks to Terry! 👍

I really enjoy training with Isreal. He's not just a trainer, he's a friend and your biggest cheerleader and supporter. He's committed to helping you achieve your fitness goals and is truly invested in your fitness journey. Even on days when we don't meet, I receive messages encouraging healthy choices, to make sure I've done my homework workouts, or just helpful healthy tips. I've made major strides in my fitness journey while training with Isreal. He pushes me to do things that I never thought I could. With every session, I get stronger and my limitations become less. He kicks my butt and keeps me smiling while doing it (most of the time). Training with Isreal makes you want to better and makes you want to do more. If you want to train with a genuinely awesome person who is invested in reaching your personal goals, train with Isreal. You won't be disappointed.

I was looking for a personal trainer and decided to hire him based upon his all 5-star reviews. I am so happy I chose him. He is very easy to communicate with. He listens to all my concerns and addresses all those issues. He is very knowledgeable about what he does. What I also like about his training sessions is they are rarely the same. You don't have to worry about getting bored with the training :) He is always on time and I respect him for that. Jose is the best PT!

I've been weight training for 25 years and have a pretty good understating of fitness & nutrition. After my first session with Will, I knew immediately that I was working with a guy that had a very high fitness & nutrition IQ. Will takes an inside out approach, the right approach, to your body, and although the weights and reps seem at first a bit entry level, you will leave each session knowing that you just got worked out in a way you never have. I can honestly say that I would very highly recommend Will to anyone that is serious about a real long lasting transformation. No matter what your end desire might be, Will knows exactly how to get you there without wasting time or money! Jeff Snyder General Sales Manager Bentley/Rolls-Royce Houston

I've been training with Jerell for about 6-8 months now, and everytime I show up to his gym, he has a huge grin on his face ready to improve you to your fullest potential. He's very flexible when it comes to working out, tailoring every detail of a workout to fit your specific needs. He is very organized while also remaining very flexable to your schedual. One of my favorite parts about working out is the group lessons where he gathers a group, usually from 2 to 4 people, and trains us as a unit. He keeps us moving and I honestly don't think that I have left his gym without feeling exhauseted and that I had accomplished something.

Akshay Raju - Personal Training is really great. I was skinny but too unmotivated and shy to go to the gym. I had Akshay Raju as my personal trainer and now I noticed a positive change in my appearance. I am happy and now more confident with myself. I definitely recommend Akshay Raju to anyone looking for great quality personal training. Karla Gonzalez - 07.24.2016

This is my first time working with a personal trainer and my experience has been nothing but positive. José Alberto is 100% committed to get the results you are looking for. When you are training with him even little adjustments he does when lifting weights, from the way you position your shoulders or back to how your far apart your feet are make a great difference and the best part is that you see the results. I have been working with him for only one month and I have seen faster results with him by training smarter and targeting those areas that you want to improve.

Jonathan was by far the most involved trainer I've had to date. I've gone through 4 trainers in my life, none of which before Jonathan was personally invested in me sticking to the program and checking in on my progress. I opted to choose from his lowest cost training program. Even though I only saw him 5 times in one month, he made sure to be available to answer all of my MANY questions about the program and it's constantly changing challenges. One thing I truly enjoyed about training with Johnathan was his emphasis on safety and form. One detail I enjoyed about training with Jonathan the most was his concentration to you in your work out. He was never distracted by his phone or other things during my work out. He truly made personal training PERSONAL. That which is something that is lost with other trainers who get distracted easily or seem detached during your work out.

I first met Alex when he was but a humble front desk clerk at a local gym. Once he became a trainer he gave me a free personal training session. He was thorough and showed me new techniques on how to train my body for my athletic goals. Alex's training methods without a doubt work and whether he is at Illuminate Fitness or at a park, he can provide you with the pinnacle of what fitness has to offer. Take it from this D1 collegiate golfer, your trust is well placed in this man.

Darren has been a Godsend to me and in just the past 6 weeks has completely and totally changed my life! He is an incredibly smart, wise and knowledgeable trainer who is always in a happy, positive mood, full of energy, and treats me with the upmost respect and kindness. His expert coaching and guidance has been invaluable to me. I no longer suffer from chronic lower back and sciatic nerve and leg pain like I did prior to hiring him. He pushes me to do my best and always makes it fun and interesting with new activities that I would never have thought of that are transforming not only my body, but my mind and soul too. My friends and family have begun to see the changes in me and say I radiate with health and happiness now. He is positive and uplifting during training exercises and the time flies because he is so fluid at moving me from one exercise to the next. I am never bored. He is a gifted, talented human being with a heart of gold and soul to match. This man truly cares about his clients and I couldn’t be happier with my choice of trainers. I look forward to working with him twice a week for the foreseeable future. Darren is the real deal and I would definitely recommend his personal training services! He has earned my trust despite my reluctance and concern due to numerous health issues I had and not knowing my way around a gym, and I am truly grateful to him for everything he has done to make my life better. I look forward to every session! God Bless and thank you SO MUCH Darren!

Esteban is an amazing trainer!! I remember training with him back in San Antonio, Tx and boy did I get some gains!!! I used to be extremely skinny. I started training with a weight of 107. After a year and a half of training with Esteban, my weight was 123. I grew a lot of muscle with increasing weight every week. We set goals and we accomplished them. By far, legs were always my favorite to train and Esteban knows how to work that area extremely well. Not only is he proficient in weight training, but also his genuine care for getting his clients to their goal. He is someone you can truly feel comfortable training with. He is always right there with you sometimes doing the exercises wth you for encouragement! All in all, I miss training with Esteban. Was one of the only trainers to ever increase my muscle mass. Train with Esteban, he will exceed your expectations!

I just started working out with Chris in mid-November. He taught me how to use the equipment and has been great at answering all my questions. He designs really great workouts every time I work out with him to help me achieve my targeted goals. In the past two weeks of training I am already feeling a change in my energy levels and I see some definition in my muscles that I haven't seen in years. Thanks for your help so far Chris. I look forward to continuing the program.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is kickboxing hard?

Kickboxing is as intense a workout as you want it to be. As with any fitness regimen, the more effort you put in, the more results you will get. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how physically challenging it is. Combat or self-defense kickboxing, where you train in a martial arts studio with sandbags or spar against combat partners, can be an intense physical workout. Group kickboxing classes that use sandbags as part of the workout will also elevate the degree of intensity, because of the level of exertion punching and kicking the bag requires. Cardio kickboxing group fitness, which employ kicking and punching moves but no sandbags, has comparable intensity to jogging but works a wider range of muscles while increasing strength, flexibility and coordination. Here are some of the core kickboxing moves:

  • Cross: A straight punch that you throw slightly across your body, using your dominant hand.
  • Jab: A quick, straight, face punch. Usually thrown with the non-dominant hand.
  • Uppercut: A punch thrown up from the midsection (using either hand) that connects with the underside of your opponent’s chin.
  • Hook: A curved punch (using either hand) that connects with your competitor’s jaw or chin.
  • Side kick: A kick delivered when your competitor is at an angle to you. Raise your leg to the side, then bend at the knee to deliver the kick.
  • Front kick: A kick delivered straight on while you are facing your opponent.
  • Roundhouse kick: A kick delivered by swinging a leg up in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion (depending on which leg you’re using) with momentum to strike the opponent with the instep of the foot.

What should you wear to kickboxing?

What you wear to kickboxing can vary based on the setting. For kickboxing group fitness classes that are part of a gym’s cardio class schedule, standard fitness attire is appropriate. Athletic sneakers, pants or shorts that you can comfortably kick in without getting tangled or flashing anyone, and a top that allows for easy movement when punching and jabbing are all good choices. You won’t need protective gear or gloves, as most cardio-based kickboxing classes do not use punching bags.

Kickboxing training that takes place at a martial arts studio typically requires protective gear. You may need boxing gloves (beginners may want 12-ounce or heavier gloves for more cushioning) and hand wraps that protect and support your hands under the gloves while you punch the bag. If your kickboxing training includes sparring with opponents, you’ll need a mouthguard and any protective head and body gear your studio requires. Always be sure to bring plenty of water, too.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

What do you need for kickboxing?

What you need to bring to kickboxing depends on where you are working out and what your goals are. For a gym or fitness club’s cardio-based group kickboxing class that does not use punching bags, you generally need only appropriate workout gear and enough water. For kickboxers who are training in a martial arts studio, working one-on-one with a trainer toward a specific goal or sparring with competitors, you will need your own boxing gloves (12- to 16-ounce gloves provide more protection for beginners) and hand wraps (to protect and support your hands under the gloves, as well as keep them dry). If your lessons are in a martial arts studio, you may not be permitted to wear shoes, so bring clean socks if you don’t like to go barefoot. If your training includes sparring, you may be required to wear a mouthguard and/or protective headgear. Whether you’re in a group fitness class or hardcore training session, bring a sweat towel for your comfort and the comfort of people around you.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.
