Scotty and his assistant are great guys! They were expedient in completion of repairs and took the time to explain what they found to be the cause of my plumbing woes. I will call them for any future plumbing and remodeling projects.

Joel isn't even done with my project yet, but I had to come here and say how amazing he is! Not only was his bid the most reasonable I recieved, he tackled a difficult existing texture problem with ideas that only a seasoned vet would have come up with. His team is extremely professional and man, do they know what they are doing! I am remodeling an older house, and I'm actually thrilled to have more work for him to do after our initial project. Hire this guy!!!

Juan was great. I am extremely pleased with how my bathroom turned out. He painted, and updated the commode, vanity, mirror, lighting and flooring in less than 2 days. When we ran into an unexpected issue due to the builder-grade plumbing, he had someone at my house immediately to take care of the problem. He is competitively priced and I will definitely use his services on other projects in my home.

Two plumbing problems: one complicated, one fairly simple. Both were fixed! Really professional, friendly and thorough work by Jim and Tony. The second bathroom proved to be something of a challenge but Jim kept working until he figured it out and got it fixed. Really appreciate the professionalism and positive attitude. Jim called to let me know he was running late and would be there 30 minutes later than originally scheduled, which was fine. Very prompt service overall. I will definitely use this company again.

Manuel, Handyman Walls, and his crew did an excellent job on this project which consisted of removing popcorn ceiling, retexturing and patching up the ceiling and walls. When you hire Manuel, you get someone that is diverse and has the ability to do things that are beyond the typical paint job. He was able to come up with solutions for some issues I wanted to address. He was able to take out an old return air filter vent of an unusual size and replace it with a new one of a normal size that required a little structural change. He finished out the tile in a bathroom and redid the thresholds. Installed some new fans as well. All of this was done in a timely manner. Manuel is flexible, competent, has a good eye for detail, and is passionate about delivering a fine quality of work.

We hired Felipe to help us remodel our bathroom. We wanted to remove the tub unit and install a standing shower. We hired Felipe based on his sheer honesty about the cost of the project as well as his ability to begin the project as soon as possible. He charged us only for the labor of removing the tub unit (and hauling the pieces away), and the installation of the new shower, including the tiling. All of the expenses came out of our pocket, so we purchased the tile and door on our own time. Any of the other materials needed (concrete, siding, grout, etc) Felipe purchased and billed us for later. He showed us every single receipt for anything he bought at the time of reimbursement. It was all at retail prices (he bought everything from Home Depot). He also picked up the door from Home Depot for us, as it was unable to fit in our car, at no extra cost. At the end of each day he told me exactly what he and his son (the only people working the job) did and exactly what his plans were for the next day. If there was going to be a delay of any kind, he let us know right away and made it known that it was not going to change the price that we agreed upon at the beginning of the project at all. If you are having any bathroom work done in your home, I HIGHLY recommend this man. We are extremely satisfied with the completed project and the entire process. We will definitely be hiring Felipe in the future should we want to remodel our second bathroom.

I also ask each contractor to provide phone number of references before I hire them and did this with David. The first lady I talked with was an elderly lady and she spoke so highly of David that I wanted to ask her to confirm she wasn't his grandmother! After hearing similar good things from others I hired David to do tile work for my bathroom and stone work for the shower. The quality of the work was superb. David is one of those guys who has great skill and the commitment to do the job right. Because I wasn't exactly sure how I wanted to finish the rock shower, David and I agreed on a hourly fee so I could make any changes as we went. I was very impressed when I saw on one invoice that he didn't charge me the whole time he was working one day because he felt like he had made a mistake that caused extra time and didn't feel that I should have to pay for him to fix it. Overall I was extremely pleased with his work. He does a great job and is honest in the process.

Mario is AMAZING!! I hired him and his employees to tile my bathroom floor to ceiling. As is often the case with a remodel, when walls were exposed, the design had to change. Mario rolled with it and helped in every way he could. Whether it was ordering and picking up tile, unexpected electrical work, changes in design, or just to check in, Mario's communication is off the charts. I always knew what was going on, what was changing, and it was always so clear that my satisfaction was his top priority. When the job was finished to my satisfaction, there was one small section of textured wall that Mario wasn't happy with, so he stopped by (himself) before work to make sure it was right. This is a great company and they will be my first call the next time I need similar services.

We hired Henson Home Solutions, LLC to do an extensive remodel of our home including new windows and trim, painting the entire interior, changing square room openings to beautiful archways, replacing all interior doors, adding ceiling lights to our dark living room and kitchen, installing beautiful barn doors between two bedrooms, and a total redo of our small outdated bathroom to make it look exactly like a picture I had fallen in love with. That included a beautiful tiled walk in shower that we just love. Henson Home Solutions is a great company to work with and we couldn't be happier with their work or give them a higher recommendation.

Working with Chad and his team at Figure 3 was an incredible experience! I never expected them to go so far above and beyond on my kitchen remodel. Even though I changed my mind on things and called nearly daily, they were always there for me and so friendly and adaptive at each step. They provided great pricing options that fit me well and always presented ideas even better than I could have imagined. The final project was so clean and amazing, I would definitely use them again for future projects!

From the very beginning, the process was smooth and professional. Tom was able to come out (on a weekend) and give me a quote on a very last minute job. He had his crew out for the door install just two days later! I had to install a new door and repair some wood rot before before my new floors were going to be installed. Tom made it happen! Tom and his team were great to work with. John and Wade removed my existing french doors, resolved the wood rot, and installed new sliding doors. They look great and function well. John went above and beyond my expectations. I could have hired the door installers from the Big Box stores, but my experience with them is they can only do the bare minimum that was written on the job quote. Tom's team was able to move on the fly and make repairs without any hassles or run around. It's very difficult to find quality workmanship and trustworthy carpenters. I highly recommend ToMakNew Remodeling and I'll definitely work with ToMakNew for future renovations.

Working with them was great and easy! We remodeled the whole living room, kitchen and master bathroom at a much lower price than other contractors. We are very happy with the result! They repainted the whole kitchen, added the statuary white marble countertops, changed appliances, added bamboo flooring throughout the whole living room. The entire master bathroom was tiled with marble, lights were added, mirrors, sinks, cabinets were repainted, we ordered a new tub and a shower - all was installed by the crew. It was a great experience.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

    • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
    • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
    • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
    • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
    • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

    • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
    • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
      • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
    • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
    • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
    • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
