If I could give 6 stars I would. Working with Leslie was so easy! Usually the breakfast/lunch part of our events is the most time consuming and stressful, but for the first time, I wasn't freaking out. She was incredibly prompt with quotes, answered all my questions (no matter how stupid), and thought of everything before I even asked. I'm always nervous about catering since I've had some horror stories with incredibly late caterers. Not them! They arrived an hour early, prepped, and we had an excellent breakfast. My office is notorious for being incredibly picky when it comes to food, and all I heard around the event was how amazing the food was and how friendly and fantastic the chefs were. This was a first for us! I'm afraid they're going to see a lot of us in the future, and I can honestly say that one of the reasons my event went so smoothly is due to Fabulous Affairs.

Natalie was an Amazing chef! Our meal was prepared to perfection! We let Mrs. Blackburn have control of the menu, and I can tell you that we were so happy we did! Delicious, nutritional and exquisite. Having Natalie prepare our meal on the first evening, left us with high expectations for the rest of the vacation. After visiting some of the best restaurants in the area, we both agreed that Natalie was above any competition in the area! I hope to utilize her Expertise in the near future. If you want an amazing meal to remember, you must try Natalie Blackburn’s Delectable menu.

This was awesome. We love dinner parties, but this year we've just had no time. And even when we did have time, we were wiped after the week, and couldn't face the cleaning, cooking, and cleaning again (dishes -- like a hangover without the fun drunk part beforehand). We decided to splurge and try a catering/chef service. We chose Chef Bonnie and were very pleased. Communication via email and phone was promptly responded to. She handled the somewhat complex dietary issues of some of our guests without batting an eyelash. She noted our requests and confirmed them, also dealing with my questions and minor changes perfectly. The day of the dinner she and her assistant arrived with everything they needed to cook an awesome meal. All we had to do was occasionally point out where some of our serving dishes and kitchen items were. When our guests arrived we were able to relax and enjoy a conversation for hours while Bonnie and her assistant dealt with all the food, served us, and then CLEANED UP ALMOST EVERYTHING. They even labeled and stored the leftovers in our fridge! Have I mentioned the food was delicious? It was! Rounding it all out, I felt we got good value for our money. I would not call it "inexpensive" but two people working hard for 6 hours (skilled labor at that), plus the prep time beforehand, and all supplies except the wine, salt and pepper? AND the ease of mind? Bargain. Oh yeah, almost forgot: She was very patient with our dogs, who spent most of their time under her feet until we finally put them away. Give her a try! I think you'll be pleased!

Didn't feel like preparing a 5 course meal for my special guest in my home, wanted to hire someone that I could entrust. Thumbtack referred me to Chef Haggerty, I discussed with him my desires he emailed me his suggestions. I was greatly concerned because I hadn't sampled any of his food. Chef Derrick was just as concerned about details as I was, so I hired him. The day of the event he was on time, ready to get started. The crawfish beignets and Chilean sea bass with lobster mornay sauce were excellent, but the Shrimp and grits were to die for(and I'll challenge anyone to a grits cook off). Presentation was superb. The next day my guest and I were still raving over his food. Chef Derrick, thank you so much for making my special night one to remember and we will be working together again

Chef Brian provided a cooking lesson for my junior girl scout troop. The girls were all excited about the prospect of meeting a Brian and couldn't wait for our monthly meeting. Brian showed them how to prepare 3 easy, healthy snacks. He provided great instructions, involving all the girls in each project. He shared kitchen safety tips as well. The food was great. They girls will be able to make these dishes at home. Brian has a great big personality and was a resounding success with my girls. Rowena Y.

Identifying a team building event that is truly collaborative in nature, out of the box, something everyone can participate in and that includes good food and drink is no easy task. Thankfully, Silver Whisk has the perfect recipe. From start to finish, the experience was pleasant. The team at Silver Whisk is extremely professional, responsive and passionate about what they do. They worked with us to plan a truly customized event that worked for the size of our group and budget. The venue was also a perfect fit. It was our own private home for the evening and was beautifully decorated and set up when the team arrived. The Iron Chef competition was so much fun. Everyone was engaged and involved, whether as a cook or judge. The dishes we prepared were delicious - unique, but easy enough that anyone could easily prepare them at home. We selected Thai and French. Everyone wanted the recipes afterwards! Jake and Myrna were great coaches and made the evening educational, but fun, competitive and very tasty. Everyone on the team agreed that this was, by a long stretch, the most fun team building activity they participated in. I would not hesitate to hold another event with Silver Whisk and would love to take advantage of some of their other offerings!

The pair that make up Mi Paella - chef Saul and sommelier Sisi - stepped up our event to the next level and left all of our guests raving about the great time they had! They are so knowledgeable about their cuisine and you can feel that they are passionate about it too. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a unique, fun way to feed a large group of people something delicious. Oh and did I mention, they cook the paella right in front of you on a HUGE skillet? Also adds to the great energy of their services.

About

Fortunately (or unfortunately), I tend to be a little obsessive about putting out the best tasting, utmost quality food there is. If I can't prepare what you want, or don't have that particular skill (like very large wedding cakes), I'll send you to someone that can help you. Food equates to love. Whether it's one person enjoying a well earned meal after a tough day, a couple at date night, or any number of people, food is almost always a part of making great memories. You might not remember what you had for lunch, but you remember the food when friends & family were involved & you made memories. I spent my childhood & early adulthood in Louisiana. Food was everywhere.....at church, at wedding receptions, at funeral receptions, at parties to celebrate important milestones, on Mondays because my grandmother cooked red beans & rice, on the weekends with family & friends. Have spent 25 years in Texas & Texans and their guests have the same philosophy!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

  • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
  • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
  • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
  • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
  • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
