Eddie did tile flooring in the master bedroom. He took 6 days to finish the project. He is a hard worker and wants the customer to be satisfied. The time frame to do the work was extended by 2 days, so I would recommend setting a fixed rate for a project like this. The quality of work was good and I would not hesitate to hire him in the future.

T-N-T did a great job replacing the carpet in my upstairs game room and hallways with wood flooring. They were able to match and order the exact same wood that I have downstairs. I have had floors put in before by others, but T-N-T has done the highest quality install to date, and was very competitively priced. Jesus and his team were courteous and professional, and the job was finished ahead of schedule (which is unheard-of in my book). I found T-N-T here on thumbtack, and I wouldn't hesitate to use them again.

Great work for a great price! Took care of my laundry list of drywall and interior paint issues, from small screw holes to larger sections that had been removed for plumbing access.

David and his worker Juan provided exceptional work in the demolition and installation of new wood-look ceramic tile flooring and porcelain flooring. David was prompt, thorough and flexible. His worker Juan provided great work with high attention to detail. In terms of criticism, demolition was dirty and the job took a little longer than anticipated, but at little to no fault of the contractor. I would recommend for similar work in the future.

Marco was very easy to deal with - professional and always on time. He took the time with us to explain advantages/disadvantages of different options and materials when making large decisions, left the design mostly up to us so we could create the bathroom we really wanted. The subcontractor he hired to do the tiling did such great work on our bathroom. Our custom-built vanity was exactly what I had envisioned. At the very end, it took longer than we expected to get the glass doors installed on our shower, but the bathroom was usable and house cleaned up once all the other work was done. He and his workers took care to not make a mess outside of the work zone and protect our wood flooring in our home, and when the work was complete a cleaning person came in and cleaned not only our bathroom, but all the rooms they had been walking through to get to the bathroom everyday. It was a nice and unexpected touch. The price was very fair, the work was very good, and we will definitely call Marco for our next home project. Original timeline was quoted as 3 - 4 weeks (not including glass install) and we ended up taking closer to 5 weeks (not including glass install) but I don't think I expected us to make it under 4 weeks anyway.

The job consisted of painting every room in the house, including the garage, repaired walls, and retextured some of the walls, painted cabinets in the kitchen and bathrooms. The counter tops in the kitchen was replaced, bathrooms were upgraded with new vanity and tile replaced. The flooring in the whole house was replaced. New closet doors were fabricated to replace the damaged ones in the master bedroom. New closet doors in the hallway. New tile around the fireplace, front door and garage door were replaced. Once he was done with the interior he painted the exterior of the house and replaced the roof. The project was extensive, I was very pleased with Sam and his crew they were professional showed up everyday I could see progress whenever I would go to house which meant they were working. I liked that Sam came up with creative ideas to streamline the job but did not take shortcuts the materials used were top grade. The house looks better than new. I would definitely recommend Sam and use him on future projects.

Richard responded to my Thumbtack project as soon as I posted the job offer, he arrived on time we talked about what needed to be completed and conducted a walk through. The following day Richard's team arrived on time, were very professional, presented work ethics, and communicated with each other during the project. The project was completed on time due to Richard and his team taking their time and moving quickly to meet the deadline. I can clearly state that I would recommend Rich's Flooring Installation Company to anyone looking to install wood flooring.

Hired Remodeling Pros to build arched casing trim around an arched eyebrow entry, and install a reclaimed wood accent wall. I purchased the reclaimed wood beforehand and just needed them to install it with trim. Primarily hired them as they assured me they had prior experience building arched trim and it would be super easy and a 1 day install. Arturo’s carpenter/handyman did 95% of the install himself and initially wasn’t sure what I wanted done. I explained to him how to offset the wood, make sure to blend the different colors in a random pattern. Once be got a handle on it he took off running and did a great job. However, it became very apparent when he started making the arched trim he was having trouble. It wasn’t fitting, wasn’t a clean cut, and after multiple attempts it got dark and called it quit on day 1. He came back the next day with a much better trim piece and finished the install. The final outcome looks great, so while it was a bigger task than they anticipated I give an “A” for effort. The trim still isn’t perfect, but it’s a rustic wall and doesn’t need to be perfect. I felt like I had to explain the details of the project over again multiple times to get everyone on the same page and I’m not sure I’d use them for anything requiring fine craftsmenship, but for general projects they were very nice to work with and again, final outcome was great and payment wasn’t required until work was complete. To me that’s critical to not pay for anything until work is done bc I’ve experienced bad contractors on more than 1 occasion.

I had Betos tile redo the flooring in my house. This father and son team are the hardest working team I have ever seen. I was very impressed with their work, they did an awesome job. I had a lot of things going on and was gone pretty much everyday, I don't ever let people have free range of my house but I gave them a key and full acess. They called everyday when they locked up and cleaned up everyday I wouldn't hesitate to give them full range of a multimillion dollar mansion, they are the most honest people I have met. Not to mention they were there at exactly the time they told me Everytime they came out. Thanks again for everything you guys are the best

I hired Yogis to replace all the floors in my home except bedrooms. They install tile and laminate. Since I had no knowledge of flooring or the best products to use, Eric assisted me with the whole process. I could not be happier. The work was done correctly, on time, and on budget. Awesome experience!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
