Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Last a lifetime

$10 per square foot

Slate Roof

Last a lifetime

$10-$75 per square foot

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for roof installation, replacement or repair?

Digital payment platforms are common among roofers, roof repair companies and other services. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely cause more service providers to adopt platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Square Cash, Venmo and others instead of cash or check to decrease the risk of transmission.

You can typically find out whether roofers accept digital payments on their online profiles, and you should confirm this information with them during a consultation call.

I am a first time home owner from out of state. After the costs associated with buying the house and moving, we saw that the maintenance/repair budget was wanting but it was wintertime and we really wanted to get the roof looked at. Rodney was the first to respond and the first to arrive. His inspection was thorough and his customer service was really on point. When it comes time to fix/replace my roof, I'm calling Fortress Roofing.

Blackridge Roofing was one of three roofers that came to give a bid, and the only one that didn't tell me my 5 year home didn't need a new roof, I really appreciated their candor and I even took there card to my neighbors house since they were missing shingles also.

This is the third time that we have lost shingles in a wind storm, and we've had Kyle come out and take care of the repairs. We keep joking that by the time we're done he will have replaced our whole roof. Everything he has done is stuck down tight, and he just keeps working his way through our original roof (the design and pitch changes in our roof seem to have cursed us). He is always responsive, and is able to get to our repair within a day or two of me contacting him. I am so glad to have a quick and reliable option to help keep our roof in great condition in this windy location we live in!

I was so stressed out about our roof after losing shingles in a wind storm over the weekend, with rain in our upcoming forecast. Kyle Dyson got me a quote within a couple of hours, and my roof is fixed just days later--before the rain is forecasted to come!!! Would absolutely use him again and recommend him to others!!

I really appreciate the experience working with Mattie and his team. As soon as Mattie came into the picture from bidding to scheduling, I knew I had a trusted roofer/contractor on my side. He also presented the most professional bid I received and included the wall repairs/paint caused by the roof leak, which is important to me. I strongly recommend Master Roofing!

I contacted Shane when our ceiling/roof started leaking during the rainy season. He was extremely prompt and came out as soon as he could to give us a free consultation. We agreed to a price quickly and he said it would take a couple of days for him to get to it (many of the handymen I had contacted previously were booked for weeks). Then, only a few hours after our consultation Shane text me letting me know that he could come over that afternoon to fix our roof. Within 6 hrs of contacting Shane our roof was good as new! Highly, reccomend this company.

Ryan with Rhino Repairs did a fantastic job on repairing our roof. He worked quickly patching the shingles that needed fixed and even sealed them where needed. His offer also included coming back for free should any blow off in the future until we used up our older shingles! Will use Ryan for the future replacement of our roof for sure. Thanks Ryan!!

We had First Call come out and completely tear off the old shingles and re-roof using quality materials. Shane is fantastic to work with. His crew was there every single day until the job was finished. We were extremely impressed with Shane. He is a man of his word and he was a pleasure to work with. We had several spots that were rotten and they did a great job replacing the sheets and was clear on the extra cost. We were expecting there to be several areas that would have to be replaced and Shane made sure to follow up with his crew to make sure all areas were taken care of before they moved on to putting the new shingles on. I was really impressed that Shane came out when the project was finished to double check that everything that was promised was delivered to his standards and ours. He even painted all of the vent pipes on the roof to match the new shingles. Our new roof is gorgeous and adds so much value and curb appeal to our home! We also had a large project of demolishing an old deck and Shane offered to bring his dump trailer and drop it off for the weekend so we could use it because he didn’t need it. He came early on Monday morning and took the trailer and emptied it at the dump. He never charged us for any gas or anything and we just paid the dump fee. I just think that is proof that Shane is really a stand up guy and I would recommend anyone needing any roof repairs or replacement to give him a call!

Shane from First Call did a terrific job repairing my roof. He responded to my Thumbtack request within minutes, came to give an estimate that very evening and had the repair done only a few days later. Very honest and fair in his assessment and his price beat three other bids I'd received. Meticulous workmanship and attention to detail. Was extremely pleased with my experience and have already recommended him to other friends and colleagues. Thanks again Shane! Stoney

Stop looking now. Go with Fortress Roofing!!! I had several shingles blown off down to the wood. I was going to fix it myself, because I'm a cheapskate, but my house is very tall, I don't have a ladder that would get up their, and I really didn't want to die doing it. So I thought I would get an estimate to see how much I was going to save. MINUTES after entering my project on Thumbtack, I was sent a response. A nice gentleman went to my house that day, climbed on top, took a look around and sent me pictures of the damage I knew about, plus some damage I didn't know about. He quoted me fixing all the damage, re-sealing around all the vents, and applying some sealant (no idea what that is) to prolong the life of the shingles. The price he quoted was not much more than what I could fix it for. I would have to be an idiot to not jump on that deal. So that night I called and told them to do it. They were at my house THE NEXT MORNING, spent about two hours fixing it, and it looks like new. I can't even tell where the damage was. I had my roof fixed in less than 24 hours, and it may have been done the same day if I didn't wait until that night to give them the approval. Probably the best experience I've ever had getting something fixed.

Kyle was extremely easy to work with, was upfront and clear on what needed to be done to fix our roof. A large patch of shingles had blown off from a severe wind storm and another rain/wind storm was coming that day. I felt there was no pretense with him, which is often such a pain when trying to get a bid. He was able to immediately get it scheduled and done. He took extreme care doing even more than originally discussed to secure the shingles down and even tightened and siliconed some vents that were starting to come loose. He sent me clear detailed pictures of the work as soon as it was done. The second wind/rain storm hit less than an hour later. Extremely grateful to Kyle.
