Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Last a lifetime

$10 per square foot

Slate Roof

Last a lifetime

$10-$75 per square foot

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a roofer when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a roofer, choose virtual platforms like video chats instead of face-to-face consultations. When the roofer is working on your roof, avoid any physical contact, sanitize all involved spaces and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Do roofers offer remote or virtual services?

To find out the degree to which a roofing service can operate remotely, it’s best to contact local roofers and roofing repair specialists near you.

See if they will schedule a video call so that you can show them the project and get an idea of the cost. This will also allow them to give you recommendations on the type of roofing material, and the best time of year to do the project. You might also be able to book a roof installation or repair service far out in advance.

I hired Intermountain West Contractors to do my roof. They had a great price and Warranty. They scheduled me very quickly and actually completed a tear off and re-roof, to include installation of ridge vents, in one day. I am very impressed with the workmanship and the time it was completed in. I will use them again on my rental property next summer!

Smooth, fast, easy process to have our roof re-decked and re-shingled thanks to Rodney and his team. Quality job done well at a reasonable price. Cleanup could be a bit better, however, as we had to sweep for nails and clean gutters afterwards. Regardless, we were pleased with the result and speed with which things were completed. Action even took care of some miscellaneous antenna removal tasks with minimal notice or fuss. Roof looks great!

I never received the roof repair bid we had discussed. I was very patient and gave him extra time even when I was out of time on my end. All I got was excuses.

Intermountain West Contractors (IWC) recently replaced my roof. I got quotes from three installers, which all came back within $1,000, but IWC had the lowest price. IWC did a great job of helping me pick the color and options, including a ridge vent. They were easy to schedule the work, and they completed my roof removal and install in only 1.5 days. The installers were very friendly and proficient. I climbed up on the roof during the install to check on things, and the workers didn't mind. When the installers were done, they reminded me that I could use the large trash container to also haul away any junk that I had. This was a great time saver, because I was dreading taking my junk to the dump! After the project was complete, Josh the co-owner came out to do a final inspection with me. We found that somehow, 2 nails were accidentally nailed into the shingles. Josh had his installer come back onsite and replace the affected area. I understand that mistakes happen in life, and so I was very satisfied with how this was handled. I highly recommend Intermountain West Contractors to anyone wanting to replace their roof.

Mike came when he said he would, estimated and completed a repair job that other roofers had passed on or not shown up. And when it appeared to still be leaking after a downpour, he fixed leaky gutters to prove it was not the roof. AshCo does thourough work and stands behind it.

It was great he was on time and did the repair on the roof before it rained and snowed again the work was done right even Holmes on diy tv would be proud of them. The price was good and the fact that he warranty the work for 5 years on a repair is not the normal for repairs so thanks and it didn't leak during this last snow and rain storm. Great job.

Rodney came out to remove my old swamp cooler and ductwork. He and his crew member not only removed it, laid down sheeting and re-shingled in a timely manner, but also filled in another spot where a shingle had blown off and lastly put in 4 turtle vents. And all for a great price. RDB Roofing goes the extra mile and I’d use them again.

Mike was my first contact, he came same day and gave me a quote, knowing that there was going to be a storm the next day, his crew came later in the day and fixed not only the area of my roof that was causing the leak but also 6 other spots that were needed. The price was reasonable and I loved that there is a 5 year guarantee on the work. There was no reason to turn down this bid and have others come out.

Mike was very responsive when it came to communication and getting our roofing project started and finished. Was one of the most painless processes I have had. A simple text got a quick and simple response even though I know he was busy with other projects. He made sure I knew when his workers would be there and they were there exactly when he said they would be. Will definately keep them at the top of my list for future projects. Can see why they are rated so highly here on Thumbtack.
