The job was a total remodeling of a large townhouse(3600 sf), under limited time. It is in a popular ski area, and it was getting close to a new season opening. It needed to be finished before the snow fall. Therefore, it was hard to assemble a team of skilled professionals as they were in high demand to finish every project in town before the season would start. Brian and Jami (co-Ownwers of Blue Sky) took this hard task with an very professional attitude, created a team of very good and hard working sub-contractors, and achieved amazing job together. I lived out of state from the job site, and I had to fully rely on Blue Sky. Though, they kept me informed in every step of the remodel, communicated extensively by text, photos, email, and phone calls, which made me fully confident with theim. I, myself, am also a designer, and understood the time pressure and tough situation of logistics they had. The impressive thing was that they not only achieved the good construction but also paid very personal attention to every detail ,and cared about my benefit first throughout the project. They had a very positive attitude, and solved every usual and unusual problem that arised, very well and creatively. They had an amazing people skill, which was a big plus to have kept everyone involved going with a smile, and going out of his/her way to finish his/her part. I have a deep appreciation for their and their team's work and contribution. Project was done before the snow fall, came out beautifully beyond what I imagined. I highly recommend Blue Sky if you want creative professional who pays attention to detail, put your interest first, and make your life easier. They have certainly made my remote operation stress free. I would also like to add that they also offer property management and beyond. They have found me a very good renter and took care of all relating to the lease process. A very helpful, "one stop takes care of everything" company. They are flexible to your need to come up with solutions. On top of that, the new tenant was so impressed with their beautiful remodel work, so they hired them to decorate their new home, and manage their other properties.

I had the Goose and Gander crew come to put a ventilation system in for each of our bathrooms. This task was difficult because they had to put the fans in next to the corner of the roof. They had to work in a hot attic and on top of a steep roof. The workers also sanded and painted a high oval window. Two young men were sent to do most of the work. I was nervous about their young age, thinking that maybe they didn’t have enough experience, but they worked hard and did a fantastic job. I would hire them again in a heartbeat.

Garret was quick and fair. I needed engineering drawings for my garage and he did them without any fuss. In fact i sent him the wrong drawings the first time and had to have him revise them after I realized my mistake. He didn't complain or charge me extra, he just made the changes and got me what I needed. Thank you Garrett!

I moved to Salt Lake last year and decided to rent an apartment, but i have no experience nor knew how to decorate my apartment, so i've started to look for designers online and found George. I gave him a call and on the next day he was at my place measuring everything and asking question about my taste. It took us around 15 hours (around 3-4 hours a week) to be done. He helped with everything, from telling you what it would fit, what is too expensive, what is a good deal, going to furniture stores with me... Literally everything. I was very picky and particular about what i liked, but george helped me to find exactly what i needed. My place is looking amazing and I'm very thankful for his work.

I hired Kami Beck Interiors to help me lay out a gallery wall in my Family Room. Kami set an appointment right away, came over to look at my space and the items I already owned, which I was hoping to hang, and then she went right to work. In a couple of days she had two professional wall layouts back to me for my review. I really loved how she incorporated, the items I already had, into my wall design. She also gave me a few ideas on some items I might want to purchase to complete my wall design. I can't wait to get the project completed.

I engaged Brette to help me with some design and furnishing elements during my top to bottom remodel. Brette brought fresh and innovative ideas; introduced whimsical and beautiful materials and suggested alternatives that hadn't occurred to me. All of which helped me get out of my creative box and made my finish product better than I had hoped. More importantly Brette, on a couple occasions, made suggestions for solving problems I had been wrestling with in areas she wasn't working with me in - saving me money and heartache. Here ideas were spot-on and her solutions worked fabulously. So glad she stepped in! Brette was exceptionally easy to work with - she stays in touch and makes herself available throughout the entire process. She understands better than most that your space, and its aesthetic, is incredibly important and she treats the process with the utmost sincerity and respect. I truly enjoyed my experience working with her and look forward to more future projects.

I can highly recommend working with Stacy. She is honest, hardworking and has really good design skills. Stacy did all of the interior design work for our 45 unit townhome project in Moab, including the pool pavilion. She was the bright spot in the whole project as she is so good at what she does and is an amazing, positive bundle of energy! I can highly endorse and recommend Stacy for any design project!

Adrienne is the rare competent designer who is willing to go beyond the call of duty, and someone who is genuinely nice and accommodating. She did a lot of work for us for a 102 unit building that we built in Provo/Springville. Good color and furniture choices, excellent suggestions, and smart money savings. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !!

Kelly was an absolute professional and a pleasure to work with. His plans for our add-on / remodel project were praised by several builders on the detail and level of design that were provided. Kelly has a great eye for the unknowns that you wouldn't think about and that was the best part of working with him. He has the skills and experience you would want or need. Thanks Kelly.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

    How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
