A technician named Dexter came to my house to fix my AC after unfortunately having to deal with blatant unprofessionalism prior to contacting this company. He did an outstanding job with listening to my concerns and was very professional and skilled in regards to fixing the issue. During the time he was at my home, he realized there were more issues to be addressed and was nice enough to complete the job the same day when he could have come back the next day. I really appreciated that since I was very uncomfortable in a 92 degree house during a heat wave. I would absolutely recommend this company for cooling and heating issues. My house is finally cool and I'm happy with the results.

Our thermostat and heating system suddenly stopped working on one of the coldest days of the winter. We initially called our home warranty company, who has been reliable in the past, to request an emergency service technician for the repair. After several hours of waiting anxiously, the warranty company informed us they weren’t able to locate any available HVAC repair technicians in our area...they said the reason was because it is a Sunday and there is an unusually high demand for heating system repairs. Disappointed, we decided to try Thumbtack, and within a very short time of submitting our request, Andrew called us back, came by our house and got our heating system back up and running. We are very grateful for his responsiveness, professionalism, value, and quality of work. Thank you, Andrew!

In my opinion Kevin Creel is simply the contact you want to have for your HVAC issues. Tremendously impressed with him and his expertise. I request service on a Burnham boiler/furnace. I made contact with referral from Thumbtack. That gentleman started out well, explaining to me a CO problem that necessitated buying a brand new boiler. He also mentioned the part that was bad. He never suggested getting into the boiler to thoroughly clean it out of the rust and debris. Then when I was ready to purchase the part that he diagnosed as the issue he still attempted to move me to simply purchase a new boiler. I then called Mr. Creel at Climate Pro and explained my situation and that I did not want to get a new boiler. Mr. Creel explained what he could do and that he would come out. Mr. Creel looked at the boiler, explained to me in terms that I could understand and then proceeded to do what no other contractor was willing to do. He told me he believes that it would not be a problem to get the boiler up and running. The boiler had not been cleaned in many years. He explained to me that the cleaning he would do should take place every 3 or 4 years. Mr. Creel then removed the rusted top, exposing the inside of the boiler. He then explained to me that while the boiler is old and rusty it simply needs a thorough cleaning. He showed me how the rust was causing the CO problem in the area of the boiler and that the boiler needs to be cleaned out to allow the flames to go up in the boiler and the gas to go through the vent pipe. He brought in his tools and began to clean the entire inside of the boiler out and remove the rust and debris. He then put the boiler back together, he bled the radiators throughout the house, and then fired the boiler up and it works wonderfully! Mr. Creel then thoroughly cleaned up the area around the boiler! I could not be more impressed with his expertise, professionalism and honesty. I understand that contractors are in the business to make money but Mr. Creel's integrity does not allow him to take advantage of a customer who is at their wits end! Thank you Climate Pro! Thank you Kevin Creel! Continued business success and happy customers like me.

The company moved my boiler pipes in the basement to make way for a new exterior door. The work was fast and professional. The price was higher than I expected, however, multiple companies simply refused to do the job, at any price. The company coordinated with my remodelers, which was a great help. Again, many other HVAC companies I approached for an estimate told me that they just didn't do remodeling jobs, only repair and service. Overall, I'm glad I found David and ComfortFactor and I will keep them in mind for my future HVAC needs.

Brian was great to work with. He completed the project (replacing a rooftop HVAC unit in DC) on schedule and was great with communication leading up to the project. His pricing was competitive with other vendors and he offers a two year annual tune-up service and labor warranty with installation (most other vendors only offered one year or less). Brian also repaired an issue with the inside furnace unit at no additional cost to ensure the overall system would work at peak performance for years to come. I've since recommended him to several of our neighbors.

Had a great experience with Ramond. He's an expert who has a lot of knowledge and kindness. He was able to diagnose my issue with my furnace heating and cooling system not working properly and gave me a reasonable price to fix. It is fixed now and works perfect. I will use Ramond for future work as well.

Punctual, Polite, Professional & Efficient. Everything Dave said would happen did. He came for the measuring and the deposit prior. Dave set up a date and time. The Team was here a half hour prior to scheduled time. They brought a drop cloth and were VERY mindful of all my belongings and my walls. I was shown how the furnace works and the thermostat. I was shown how to clean out the pipes to have them stay clear and how to take care of the filter. Dave, Bill and Pat are an excellent team.

Dave is a real professional. He came to my house today to look at what’s wrong with my HVAC since it’s not cooling enough. He checked the pressure, attic, vents everything and provided info based on his findings all for free. He also gave me a very good quote to replace my aging system. I would recommend him for any of your HVAC needs

Mike and his asst were able to come on short notice and solve the issue in a timely manner. I would recommend Tetteris Heating & Air. The $75 fee is not a total; it's just the fee to show up so expect additional charges for time and labor. Well worth the cost!

In the past two weeks Nice Home Services cleaned our ducts, inspected and cleaned our gas fireplace, did the annual furnace maintenance and installed a new humidifier. You could not ask for a better team of technicians. They know how to do their job and are very efficient. The cost was much less than I expected compared with other companies. I definitely would refer Nice Home Service to my friends and family. You would have to look long and hard to find a company that provides this level of service.

Brad and his team did a great job - we were quite pleased. Brad took the time to go over all of our options with us (gas furnace, central A/C, ductless mini-splits, electric water heater, etc) and helped us reach the best combination for our small row home. Their pricing was very competitive and we know we received better customer service than we would have found elsewhere. They were honest and transparent with us every step of the way and when we had a small problem at the end, Brad was very quick to rectify the situation fully. We definitely recommend Hughes Mechanical to others and will be calling them with future work ourselves!

We recommend Jim and his team very highly! His challenge was figuring out how to install a central heating and cooling system in a 1851 stable. Not only did he take on the challenge but seemed to revel in it! It was time consuming and amazingly difficult. He even took the time and made the effort to order and install special air ducts to distribute the air flow more efficiently. He returned promptly to tweak the system when we called. He's easy to work with, knowledgeable, able to work outside the box and has the integrity and work ethic it's hard to find these days. We couldn't be more pleased!

JD was very nice and answered my questions courteously. He suggested me an alternative and cheaper ways to fix my heat pump. He also called the next day to ask if my heat pump still working. He came back when the fuse of the furnace and thermostat was blown due to change of battery to the thermostat. He fixed the problem and stayed on site to make sure the problem resolved. I will recommend his service to anybody who needs A/C repair.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace serviced?

When your furnace isn’t regularly serviced it can operate less efficiently. This increases your energy bills and also prevents your furnace from keeping your home as warm as you like. Keep your furnace properly maintained with regular service. The national average furnace service cost is between $60 and $80. Companies may offer tuneup specials that cover all the necessary testing, tightening, measuring and cleaning to keep your equipment running at top efficiency. If you have a newer system, furnace service costs may be covered by your warranty. Outside of warranty, a basic tuneup might start at $58 and a more advanced maintenance cleaning could be over $120. Here are some signs your furnace may need service:

  • The furnace has stopped functioning entirely.
  • The temperature cannot be regulated.
  • Rooms in the home are either too hot or too cold.
  • The heated air coming from the furnace smells like gas.
  • The thermostat isn’t working.
  • Strange noises are coming from the furnace.
