Met Steve when he was playing a show at a local pub- got to talking and shared with him my 11 year old son's passion for music and learned that Steve gave guitar lessons. Met him on a Thursday. By the following Monday, he was sitting in my home teaching my son to play Everlong- Steve is passionate, enthusiastic, and professional- he's a full time musician- this IS his thing!! Communication with him re: lessons, etc is very easy- and my son thinks he's super-awesome- which bodes well for his own enthusiasm regarding pursing guitar. Highly, highly recommend.

I've been playing acoustic guitar for the past 7 years, but never took lessons or learned any theory, which led me to hit a plateau and a loss of interest. After a couple of sessions with Stevie, I was able to connect previous experience with new guitar knowledge in order to play more creatively and have more fun doing so.

I have gotten a series of guitar lessons from Stevie. The progress I've made is amazing. If you're looking for a relaxed atmosphere to ask questions and learn to play guitar, Matthews is your guy. He is passionate about music and your ability to get better. I'm very excited to continue to learn more.

Gregg is a very patient, caring, kind, astute teacher. I have taken guitar from other teachers in the past and it never sticks. That has changed since I have taken guitar lessons from this man. He begins the lessons by asking you what you want to learn, where you're coming from and how you'd like to proceed, how much time you have to practice and tailors his lessons and recommendations to what you can do, without ever making you feel guilty for being out of practice and if you're busy like me, that's much appreciated. Another very cool thing is that he has a bunch of guitars you can use while you're taking your lesson so you don't have to haul your guitar on the metro or bus. Gregg is very knowledgeable about different types of music and also continues his own training which makes him an even better teacher. On top of all this, he has a positive attitude, a love and passion for music and a great heart; recently he started a non-profit Guitars not Guns chapter in DC- http://www.gngnca.org/ check it out!

I've been taking beginner acoustic guitar lessons this summer with Gregg. He is patient, upbeat, and great at putting together a flexible program that will meet your particular goals. The studio is conveniently located in DC, and guitars available to use during lessons so you don't need to lug your instrument around town.

You think you know guitar... but you have know idea. I have played guitar on and off for over 15 years, including practicing with introductory lessons as a kid, self-learning, open mics, and playing covers and originals with several bands. I would consider myself an "intermediate" player... Nearly one year into lessons with Dan Cohn and my world has changed. For those of you who don't want to read to much further, let me just say - he will transform your playing and take you to the next level. More details: I have had the awesome experience of advancing my rhythm guitar playing, learning how to "truly play" in a band and ensemble setting, and enhance my lead guitar playing, in addition to significantly improving music theory. Without a doubt, Dan is a virtuoso - a master of music practically without any arrogance of airs. If you can dedicate the time and determination to improve your guitar playing, Dan will create a customized path to help you meet your goals. Most importantly, he is an awesome person creating a very cool, inclusive community of musicians through his JamClass program, which aligns your individual lessons and study with real-life application during JamClasses, playing songs with an ensemble of other students. Improving your skills in anything is hard and takes work, Dan expects you to put in the time and effort - and if you do, you will be seriously rewarded and excited about how much you can accomplish!

Dan's a fantastic teacher because he makes you want to be a better musician. He uses different ways of instructing that specifically cater to your tastes and interests. He's familiar with a wide range of music, genres, and instruments. I came to Dan for beginner guitar lessons, but ended up gaining much more musical knowledge than I could have ever imagined. Dan helped me with the technicalities of the guitar, and helped me refine and add to my skill as a drummer of 11 years. In Jam Class, we played everything from James Brown to Nirvana. Dan is able to foster a great community of musicians within Jam Class, and will not only teach you to play, but to perform and work with other musicians.

Joe F.

Verified review

I came to Dan for guitar lessons but the breadth of his experience allowed me to get so much more. Dan has helped me develop my ability as a guitar player, vocalist, and public performer. His ability to build Jam Class from the ground up speaks to his abilities both as a one-on-one teacher and as a group leader. He's put together an incredibly welcoming community of musicians of all skill levels who genuinely enjoy each other's company, and that's not easy to find.

Brian was awesome! I had him perform at my wife's 40th birthday party and he was great. He learned a few new songs (in addition to the extensive list he already knows) that my wife and her friends loved when he sang them. I've been taking a weekly hour lesson for a month and have greatly improved my playing and understanding of music working with Kevin. I am an adult who has been playing all my life but with little formal training. I have hit a wall with trying to self-learn using books and videos and needed someone to walk me through some of the advanced concepts. He is very patient and encouraging with my efforts to apply the lessons to my own music interests. Specifically he is helping me fill gaps in my knowledge by teaching me jazz concepts and the modes and how to apply them to jazz standards. I enjoy the lessons and look forward to them every week.

My young daughter Clarisse had never taken guitar lessons when she stared with Kevin at Foxes Music. Her progress is simply astonishing. Kevin is a complete professional who is friendly and engaging with Clarisse, and he got her excited to learn at her very first lesson. She's actually learning about music and how to read notes, not just replaying from memory. She loves going to her lesson, and I couldn't be happier with Kevin's instruction. Watching her face when she shows me what she's learning is one of the best parts of my week too.

My daughter recently started guitar lessons with Kevin. At first she was a bit reserved when it came to lessons but Kevin provides age-appropriate instruction without the pressure for a young child. She really enjoys her lessons and picking up her guitar at home. We are both looking forward to more lessons with Kevin! I will also add that Kevin and Foxes Music (where the lessons are held for her) were very accommodating with our work/school schedule and worked with us until we found the perfect day/time slot!

I have been playing guitar for my own enjoyment for 40 years. As a boy I briefly had casual lessons in strumming along to popular music. The lessons weren't very serious or effective, and so I'm pretty much self taught. Over the years I've become an accomplished dilettante able to impress the nonmusicians, but always aware that I didn't really play very well. In all that time I've often wondered how the really talented musicians learned their craft, never more so than while watching my son's slow progress with the laughably unchallenging lessons at Bach to Rock. This Christmas I told my wife I would really enjoy having some serious instruction, and she went hunting for the best the region had to offer. She found Alexander Rani at NOVA. I progressed more in my first 4 lessons with Alexander than I have in the last decade. I see now how accomplished musicianship is not some unattainable feat of the few truly blessed. Proper technique and a little diligence can see even an old duffer like me making beautiful music. My wife, who thought I was ridiculous for wanting to take lessons when I already knew how to play, keeps telling me how shocked she is at the difference. I feel like an idiot for thinking it was beyond me and not seeking out a real teacher before. And that has been the difference: a real teacher. Alex is fabulous. I have to say I find it intimidating to be sitting down with such a tremendously accomplished musician. He is so at ease doing things I know are extremely difficult and he can throw in endless variations of his own creation seemingly without having to think at all. He is a concert quality guitarist of the very first order. However he is wonderful at making you feel at ease. He is kind and patient and never condescending or harsh. (And I promise, my playing should try his patience if anyone's will!). I won't say he makes it easy. Quite the opposite. Alex will challenge you at your level of ability. He will take you out of your comfort zone and on to the next skill or technique and tell you you are ready to do more. For me the first run through anything new seems completely alien, and many of these things I wouldn't have given more than a first try. But Alex patiently takes you through one little bite at a time and quickly it becomes more natural. In a short time you are doing things that you didn't think you had in you. And that has been the biggest surprise. I haven't gotten very far yet, but now I understand how it is done, how accomplished musicianship is attainable one skill at a time. Thanks, Alex.

Alex is a great tutor. He is extremely talented no question about it, but the best part that makes him a great guru is his patience and passion to teach. He is kind and a real gem. He is very adjusting with my schedule since i am working full time. Learning guitar is very struggling initially (we all know that), but the efforts he put in teaching is remarkable & that gives you extra push to put hard work. I have only taken 7-8 classes so far, but already in love with my guitar.

Alexander is a master of classical guitar. He instructs my teenage son at our house. His always arrives with energy and passion for music. My son enjoys his lessons and appreciates how Alexander inspires and challenges him to be the best he can be. Alexander is new to the U S and is still learning the language. My son has not had a single problem with communication. Maybe because music is an international language. He is so talented I am luckly that he is teaching my son.

I hired Bill for electric guitar lessons. I actually shopped for an instructor who would fit my learning style best. I learn by doing things hands-on, not so much auditory learning. After trying 4 different instructors, I decided Bill was the best fit for me. Other instructors were good but did not have what I was looking for such as: not teaching according to my learning style, not understanding my goals, or making me feel like I learned nothing after the first lesson. I felt none of these will Bill. After my first lesson with him, I knew he would be a great fit for me. You can just tell he has experience by interacting with him. I left the lesson feeling satisfied with the information I learned and that I am capable of reaching my goals. He takes his time with each lesson, does not rush, and welcomes all questions. He is patient with newbies like me and adept at explaining things in a manner that I will understand. I never feel overwhelmed with the information he gives. I like that he gives positive encouragement when you do something correctly. He will also help you correct you if you have bad form/technique. Bill is very professional, he responds to inquiries quickly. He has the knowledge, experience, and background to help you reach your goals. He has a great personality and is willing to work with your schedule. I highly recommend Bill as an instructor!

I am only four lessons in with Bill, and in an extremely short period of time I'm happy to report I've learned more in four sessions than I could have ever imagined. His teaching style adapts immediately to the ability, skill level and goals of his students -- Bill also asks his students what they are most interested in learning as well to integrate those goals into each lesson. Bill provides exercises in between sessions to help keep practice consistent and ensure that students also achieve results. I personally can't wait for my next lesson and looking forward to many more with Bill! I would highly recommend Bill to anyone of all skill levels who are considering guitar lessons.

Larry changed my playing for the best, and I honestly couldn't be more thankful that I was lucky enough to find him. His teaching methodology, knowledgeably about jazz/blues/classical music have absolutely changed my life. Before I started with him, I had been self-taught with scattered lessons from the internet/local players. I had never really developed much of an individual voice on the instrument, and the guitar itself was quite mystifying. I never understood how to put ideas together on the neck with any fluidity, and I never really understood how chords worked/ how scales worked/ the symmetry of the guitar. Larry showed me how to connect musical ideas across the entire instrument in any position, no matter where you are - liberating. You will develop your very own chord and scale vocabulary, and you will have a powerhouse of ways to use it. Once I had the entire instrument at my disposal, he constantly and in innovative ways pushed me to develop my own voice on the instrument - this is key. You will sound like YOU, no-one else, and that is what is so lost in most guitar instruction these days. Not only will you unlock the neck of the guitar, you will do it with the most minimal effort possible. His methodology focuses on using the least amount of energy possible to achieve your musical goals. Playing went from a frustrating and confusing mess, to a relaxing and rewarding experience. Again, you will be able to take any tune and make it as originally yours as possible. Not only do you get a world-class guitar education, but you also have the added advantage of Larry's extensive theoretical and composition knowledge\experience. You will develop these areas of musicianship in tandem with your guitar playing: 1.) Ear training\sight-singing\sight-reading: Larry highly emphasizes and nurtures this important skill. He teaches you to hear musical ideas - you will sing them, write them, and eventually play them. Specifically, you will learn to hear patterns from scales, chords, intervals, and larger compositions. This is HUGE if you play any improvisational music, or with a group - your ears are everything. You will learn how to sight-sing musical notation also - a seemingly forgotten skill among anyone else I've encountered. You will learn how to sight-read music in every position on the guitar possible. This idea coincides with his general methodology: no matter where you are on the instrument, you will be able to express an idea. This is a great skill that I've been able to vastly improve upon - and believe me, I was terrified of sight-reading. 2.) Rhythm training: You WILL learn how to keep time. I often avoided sight-reading because I didn't know how to keep time very well. I started off with the basic divisions, and worked my way smoothly and progressively into more challenging divisions. Larry has an amazing ear, so he can point out when you are even slightly off on something, which was a huge help. 3.) Comprehensive music theory: Larry is a remarkably talented classical composer, and he has a ton of experience to boot. You will get the same music theory education as if you were enrolled at a conservatory, with worksheets, exercises, tests, and creative assignments that he developed at Peabody conservatory. You get all this and more. Larry is also a blast to talk to since he has spent so much time traveling around playing music with people. He is a wealth of information regarding other artists, and music history. He's genuinely a wonderful person, he's my musical hero, and one of the most influential people I've ever met. He's one of those once-in-a-lifetime treasures. If you are lucky enough to get a spot with him, TAKE IT. I can't stress enough how much you will thank yourself.

When I started lessons with Larry, I had been taking guitar lessons for three years under a ‘learn by learning songs’ method. I didn’t know exactly what I needed, but I knew that I wanted get deeper into music, both theoretically and in my guitar work. I tend towards a combination approach of intellectual and emotional, and I value doing things well, and seeing its link to the larger picture of music. When I pursued Larry as a teacher, I realized I was taking a ‘next step’. What I found in Larry as a teacher and person is an expert in blues music and in how to teach music, particularly guitar. He has piqued my intellectual interest and challenges me to keep learning both the guitar techniques and theory. I didn’t know exactly what I was looking for, but this was it—a Peabody Institute-quality education mixed with blues experience, theory and then throw in endless stories about music from the sixties onward, because Larry was there. You can read his bio for all of the things he’s done, and they’re numerous, but I keep learning more. Most importantly, though, Larry is a great teacher. I trust Larry, and I know he sees something in me. He is a cheerleader-style coach, but an honest one. I know that when Larry tells me that I have potential or talent in a certain area, that he’s telling the truth. He’ll be just as honest when I’m not doing something well, also. Larry has a system that works, and he knows how to teach it and adapt it to my style of learning. My understanding of music, my ear especially, has grown leaps and bounds since taking lessons from him—I no longer feel frustrated, like I’m missing something. I know that if I continue to practice what he is teaching me, I am going to be an expert at guitar and will perform publicly. Larry is an amazing resource, a wonderful teacher, a composer, and a pretty funny guy. Most importantly he’s serious about, and seriously involved with and expert in music—he’s inspired me and he’ll inspire you.

First off, Larry is one of the best teachers I have ever had. You can tell he cares about every fundamental building block necessary to become a well rounded musician. He's particular about certain techniques, and as I progress I continue to discover the brilliant method to his madness. I took saxophone lessons for 4+ years, and was in multiple bands, but I can honestly say Larry has liberated the way I understand music. Lessons with Larry are one of a kind. He writes the lesson book week by week, combining years of knowledge and experience into one book for your personal use. You learn everything you would have if you paid thousands of dollars for music education, plus the one on one lesson time. So nothing goes misunderstood, and you move at your perfect pace. I recommend Larry to anyone who truly wants to become a great musician. There are no shortcuts, and this is the real deal. Larry has mastered the art of teaching, and I honestly believe he will help me surpass the high expectations I have set for myself as a musician.

Jack Philipoom came to my attention at my nieces wedding reception in Williamsburg , Virginia where he was performing jazz guitar with an ensemble. It was there that I booked him for a garden party at my McLean , Virginia home. The flow and style of this extremely talented musician added an elegant ambiance to our evening. Carey’s talent as a teacher does wonders for bridging the gap between music theory and music performance. I went into lessons with only a very basic knowledge of music theory that I hardly was able to apply to guitar, but his lessons taught me how to play in a way where I can either explore the musical depth of the tune or simply jam, comfortable that what I’m playing will always sound good. It’s broadened my abilities as a musician without taking away the simple fun of playing guitar, something that is invaluable in any teacher.

Connor O.

Verified review

Carey is just as good a teacher as he is a player. For a while I had been opposed to music lessons, worried that they might be intrusive or restricting, but those worries quickly faded after beginning studying with Carey. He teaches a systematic method of visualizing scales and chords that serves as a foundation from which a player can go to any genre. Whether it’s music history, theory, or performance, I have learned more in an hour with Carey than I have for years on YouTube or from theory books.

Brian B.

Verified review

Carey is a master guitar player and a master music and guitar teacher. Not all guitar players have mastered the guitar and not all guitar players can teach. Carey can do both. He his fluent in the language of music theory and guitar playing technique, and effortlessly and enthusiastically articulates both to his students.

I hired Brian because I am mostly self taught and I wanted a teacher to help me fill in gaps in my ability. For a professional instructor, I do not think he had an acceptable amount of knowledge. For example, I said something about a minor7b5 chord and he acted like it was over his head and said, "I'm not the guy to ask about that." I felt like I had to hide my ability and knowledge in order to not show up the teacher, and I am not good enough where that should be the case.

I Have been taking lessons from someone else for about 2 years now. Im happy with how I was doing and coming along. However After taking lessons from Jake for 2 months now, I feel like I have made some fast progress. Jake really seems to care about how your doing and the progress your making. You can really tell his love for music , and my girlfriend who plays the flute and piano also took notice to that. He has me playing some songs, learing scales, and bar chords. And wow did that open a whole new door to music. A lesson of 45 minutes to an hour is huge, you dont feel rushed and you have good time to warm up, practice, and learn. The extra time really helps with my focus. Jake is a very good teacher and I highly recommend his lessons. I honestly feel like I have made Great progress and most of all Jake makes learing music fun.
