We were very satisfied with Mermaid Catering providing food for our staff holiday party in December 2016. Julie was great and easy to work with, providing exactly what we asked for at a competitive rate. They were prompt with the delivery and gave a beautiful and delicious spread. My favorite was the "blackboard cheese and charcuterie" as it was visibly impressive and extremely tasty. I'd hire Mermaid Catering again!

We hired Brandon as a personal chef for my wife's 50th birthday party. He was extremely helpful in putting together the menu, flexible in working with our choices, and very cost-effective. He and Ashley did a great job with setup, presentation, communication, and cleanup. The food was fantastic, from the appetizers (crab cakes in Cajun remoulade and summer spinach salad) to the entrees (fresh rockfish in a lemon dill cream sauce and steak with a red wine mushroom reduction) and the delicious chocolate cake. My wife and many of our friends are "foodies", and Brandon's meal earned an ovation from our group. Well done, and thanks for making my wife's special day extra special!

Alpha Pitt Smokers by Jason Martocci was the best wedding food we will ever have and for a very reasonable price. Poor Jason had a rough and strict diet he had to work with for my wife and he did an excellent job. My wife is deathly allergic to seafood, antibiotic/hormone free meat, and Gluten is no fun for her either. We really wanted something special for our wedding that everyone loves; and everyone loves a good cookout. It is hard to find cookout food everyone can enjoy with out harming my wife. Normally when we go to a cook out she just doesn't eat. No one was willing to take the challenge because they didn't want to alter their recipes until Jason. Jason made homemade gluten free bread for our Gluten Free cheese stuffed sliders; Stuffed Chicken and pork, Fresh grilled veggies and a wonderful fall salad. We froze all of the leftovers and ate the last two sliders we had when we got back from our Honeymoon. The worse part for Jason was we had to do a tasting of his food which meant Jason had to make the food twice. Both times absolutely perfect. This was the best wedding food we ever had (twice). He also took our orders and made a special plate just for us and kept it warm so we could eat and get right back to the party. The run through the food line was purely a show with no pressure and all fun. A small FYI: at the tasting he invited several of his chefs for us to meet and cooked some bacon wrapped shrimp for them on a separate grill. Since I don't have the same allergies as my wife I tried one. It was the best and last bacon wrapped shrimp I will ever have. We joke that we will have to renew our vowels every year just to have a good cookout. A person that will change their recipes; without hindering their flavor profile and cater to your needs is what catering is all about. That is definitely something that Alpha Pitt smokers does and does right.

I had my son's 25th Birthday party catered and it was absolutely delicious! Mac and cheese was out of this world and the green beans were seasoned to perfection and the fried chicken put Popeye's to shame! Lastly, the meatballs were scrumptious! I will definitely call back for any events I have in the future! P S. I had over 70 guests and everyone raved over the food and kept coming back for more...... and there were no leftovers!

I have worked with Silver Service Caterers on a number of events. One event was a large birthday party and the second was a fundraising event for a local non-profit. What impressed me the most was the quality of the food, the creativity of the presentation, the flexibility in dealing with changes that always occur, and her professionalism. I cannot stress enough what a pleasure it was to work with KJ Jordan - always on time, providing service at the highest level, and always focusing on the client's needs. And of course, the bottom line was that everyone loved the food! I cannot think of one thing I would change. And I will definitely use Silver Service Caterers again and again!

Easter Party for 100 with an elaborate menu of pastas, sandwiches, and a chocolate fountain. The second time we have used Patrick because his food is always fabulous. We could have used more staff with this event to keep trays full and tables clean, which led to Patrick being a bit stretched, but he managed well in spite of it and always keeps his cool. He has a wonderful even non-stressed personality.

Yummy Goodness provided food and service for my March 11th wedding. Our wedding was held at a luxury home in Sandbridge. The food was displayed beautifully! Little signs told everyone what the food was and setup was gorgeous. Guests raved about the food and said it was the best wedding food ever! From the brisket to the mac n cheese / mashed potato bar to the shrimp and grits .. the food was outstanding! Lori and her team were perfection at its best. We would recommend them highly!

Kim is good spirited, pleasant, and professional. I have used her for three occasions in the past year. 1 dinner party and two holidays. She has never disappointed me. Just when I think I've tasted some of the best food ever she outdoes herself again. Her presentation is impeccable and her food is amazing. Thank you Kim for everything and will be using you in the future as always.

I was at an event that was catered by the good life kitchen the food was excellent, very fresh, colorful So pretty to look at and the taste was out of this world. I have also picked up food from there to go and have eaten there many times. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable when it ces to special needs and diets like gluten free, I have had the gluten free lentil kale and sweet potato stew and even though I am not a big fan of lentils this stew is do sweet and tasty I must recommend it. The best sandwich is the turkey melt with a delissious secret sauce you just absolutely have to try. They also have the freshest salads in town made right in front of you not to forget the fresh made salad dressings. They also serve egg and tuna salad freshly made and you just can not get that everywhere. A great selection of healthy and unusual drinks are offered . You can dine in or have a party in a clean and bright dining room. The kitchen bares no secrets it is for all to see all in all a wonderful place where everyone is treated like family come and check it out.

Harvey's brought their cart to my husband's 50th birthday surprise party. They came highly recommended by a friend and they did not disappoint. Harvey and Dorothy were very easy to work with and our guests enjoyed the variety of menu choices to pick from. Having the cart was a fun and unique addition to the party! I did not have to worry about preparing the food or cleaning it up...they were very organized, had delicious food and confidently handled our crowd!

My name is Janie Elisabeth Beck, Nik's Catering Catered my wedding. I was in need of some one who understood my needs and my tight budget. I didn't have much in the way of a budget. Nik's catering worked with my budget and the food was amazing. We did a self service buffet style cuisine. Nicole suggested Italian because it was cheap and we could get more for our money. I came to Nicole through My best friend Marilyn Watt Nicole is her daughter and she thought that she could help me. Three months prior to my wedding I sat down with Nicole and we went through some sample menus that she prepared for me and how many people I was expecting and set up a few tastings to sample some of the foods to make our final decisions. The day of the wedding things were a little hectic but once the people arrived and the vows were said we all settled up for a party. When we got to the reception hall the tables were set and the food was ready and every thing was good. I was most impressed with the quality of services that Nik's catering provided with a budget of six hundred dollars I fell like I got service of some one who spent thousands. with everything that I got for the services I was extremely happy with the services Nik's catering offered and would use thier services in the future.

My close friends and I had put together a Super Bowl party up in Williamsburg. The idea of getting it catered seemed to spark with everyone. I called Cassie and told her what the budget was. She said, "I'll put something together for you!" The Moe's crew was incredibly punctual and professional. The spread was AMAZING! Thanks to Cassie, we will be locking her down for every large party we throw together! I'm just mad that the football season ended, and we are just now trying this. Excellent work, Cassie! You are the BEST!

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

        • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
        • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
        • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
        • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
        • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
        • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
