Tony and his crew were prompt, worked very efficiently and got the demo of a very undesirable linoleum floor done quickly exposing great original pine flooring in the kitchen. He was a great communicator and kept us in the loop as the process went along. They moved all the appliances without a single scratch and removed, without damage, all of the lower base cabinets in the kitchen, giving us the ability to put them back. He was able to remove the granite countertop so that we can reuse it. I definitely recommend him for his speed during the project and will be calling him again.

I worked with John directly to replace my front porch flooring and rotted joist. He was quick to provide a quote and stuck to his number, while still remaining flexible to the project's needs. His crew was timely, efficient and friendly. We are thrilled with the finished product, I highly recommend Service One for your carpentry needs.

I highly recommend BabaBrown. Joseph does quality work with attention to detail. I hired him to widen a door with a pocket, which was not possible. His recommendation of a sliding style door was spot on. The end result was stunning. I consequently hired him to install bamboo flooring in the master bedroom, closet and hallway, and paint the rooms. He also removed carpet from the staircase, finished the steps and installed a runner. All of these tasks were done in a timely, professional manner. If you own a home, you'll need BabaBrown.

We had a total of 4 bathrooms done including a complete master bathroom remodel as well as having the flooring in our master bedroom completely redone. These were not simple projects as we added rain showers, body jets, not only in our master but even to our upstairs shared bathroom. In our master bathroom a brand new jacuzzi tub installed, we had vented ceiling fans added even in bathrooms that never had anything there before. In order to get that kind of project complete you basically have to trust the people that are employed because you can't be in the house 24 hours a day. We were so comfortable with his staff that we basically just left the front door open all day and they would come and go and do work. Extremely nice guys, hard-working, I was 100% comfortable having them in the house even with a pet and teens. Anytime you have a project there are going to be issues that come up, a lot of times things may be found once a renovation starts, or maybe something needs to be changed Etc. Every single time I asked and brought that to the attention of Nilson the answer was always "no problem, we'll fix it" and it was fixed. I've added photos as best I could but it really doesn't do any justice to the level of workmanship. I also waited a little while before leaving a review to see if any issues arose and everything has been absolutely perfect. Honestly, if I ever have any work that needs to be done I'm going to work with Nilson, getting ready to have a window repaired here and will let them do the work. The other thing is you can tell they enjoy what they do. They always had a smile on her face. If you ever want to talk live go ahead and get my number from Nilson I'm happy to provide a personal reference.

Saga Flooring LLC was hired to replace the carpet in my current apartment with hardwood. Carlos was courteous and flexible throughout the entire process. He gave many suggestions and educated us on all of our options during the planning stages. The crew showed up exactly when they said they would and finished before the anticipated time. The floors look great! After they finished I inspected the job and notice some areas along the walls that had primer splattered on them. This is from the primer they apply before laying the hardwood. I mentioned it to Carlos and he immediately offered to correct this error. He scheduled an appointment the next day and showed up with paint and actually painted the baseboards all around the apartment and touched up the walls. He went over and above the expected service to make sure this project was acceptable. I highly recommend Saga Flooring LLC, as they do great work, show up when they say they will, clean up after themselves and go out of their way to exceed your expectations.

I have had several jobs completed by Mr. Jones including a new deck, installation of bathroom vanities, mirrors and light fixtures. He is prompt, has a very accommodating schedule and one of the best features about using his services is his eye for detail. After trying to piece together my bathroom remodel I decided to consult him on other ideas and now I am working with him to have flooring installed and the remodel of my front porch. Prices are always beyond reasonable and the workmanship is always fantastic.

The job that I had was hanging a light fixture/chandelier in a small space from 20 ft ceilings. Mr. Livengood arrived on time and completed the task in roughly an hour. He threaded the cord through the suspending chain of the light fixture perfectly to make it look just right. He also took the extra time to clean a dirt ring that was left on the ceiling from the previous light fixture. Mr. Livengood did a superb job and was extremely mindful of the minor details.

Excellent work fixing up the weatherproofing on my doors and getting rid of the drafts that were causing such problems. Made great suggestions on how best to address with a 70+ year house. Hiring again for another project elsewhere in the house already.

I hired Max M Tile to replace my existing downstairs floor tile. They did a great job. They were on time every day and did not leave each day until the work was done. They completed the job very quickly and it looks great. The team had a good attention to detail and the work completed was of a very high quality. Not only that but they cleaned up after themselves which is rare with contractors nowadays. I highly recommend!

I had floors that were in terrible shape and had damage from my cats as well. I interview various floor companies and immediately liked Delenis with Floor Medic. He didn't try to oversell himself, was very honest and respectful and made suggestions that the others did not. I went with my gut and was extremely satisfied. Delenis did an amazing job on my floors. They look brand new!!! Aside from the outstanding work, he was great to work with. He went out of his way to make sure he gave me the best quality work. And it showed. His price was also very reasonable. I would recommend him highly.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
