From the beginning to the end the experience was very professional & efficient. The tutor that assisted us was wonderful, it is very important for a student to feel comfortable enough to ask for help when a little lot and our tutor was very open & inviting.

Dickson keeps my high schooler buoyed both from a skills perspective, but as importantly from an emotional standpoint, thanks to her weekly math tutoring sessions with him. Moreover, he is incredibly flexible whenever possible to allow extra sessions before important exams.

John is a wonderful math tutor. My son was able to bring his grade up from a 73 to an 89 in less than 8 sessions in 8 weeks. John is patient, kind, fun, and very knowledgeable. My son was so frustrated, confused, and deflated after months of studying and trying to understand his teacher. He now feels confident and doesn't dread math any longer. I highly recommend CUTS.

I called on Poojitha for some extra help with Math 206 (business calculus) at UMKC. She is doing a great job. I appreciate her offering a different perspective in solving problems that emphasizes what they are actually trying to identify in regular terms. I have had no issues understanding her accent. Highly recommend.

I am so grateful that I happened to come across Kimberly Canty and KJS Tutoring Services when I had reached a low point in my GRE preparation. Until I worked with Kimberly I had been using self-study prep services for a year and I had taken the GRE once, receiving a dismal quantitative score of 155. After working with Kimberly I received a quant score of 163. I am giving Kimberly five stars for the following reasons: - extremely reasonable rates ($40 per hour for GRE Math prep), plus she was able to provide me a new copy of the Official Guide to the Revised GRE free of charge - Sessions are held via Skype, which worked perfectly with my schedule, plus the sessions did not lose anything qualitatively; I was able to view her blackboard via the camera, plus we used online practice tests to run through timed drills together - Kimberly not only provides a foundation in the basics, but also reveals the subtle tricks and tips that help you identify and solve the more advanced problems more efficiently - She identifies your weak points and targets them during sessions and through homework assignments - She is incredibly encouraging and instills the confidence you need on test day (a critical point as my low confidence was definitely affecting my performance) Again, highly recommend her services!

We hired Jillian to tutor our 14 yr old in algebra. She is a lovely person and has done a great job making our daughter feel comfortable around her. Her method of teaching seems to be working well - different from the algebra teacher at school! She works hard to understand how my daughter thinks. I like how she checks in with her, asks her questions and also praises her often. That positive reinforcement is lovely!

We needed a Geometry Tutor for our 15 year old son George. This was not a class I could help him tackle. We were introduced to John Savens and he was a life saver. John Savens was able to talk with George at his level, kept him engaged, had the patience to explain the practices, created additional work for if the school didn't provide home work, and was always punctual and professional. John Saves absolutely provides the value added service we required to bring George up to the point he understood the Geometric concepts and raised his grade to a B. We're continuing to us John Sven through the summer to help bring George back up to speed with his Algebra work and be well prepared for Algebra 2 in his Junior year. Thank you for John Savens!! Sincerely, Lynne M. Trott

Joy was an excellent tutor for my twin boys. They were both having trouble in different problem areas in 10th grade math, and she made a plan to successfully help them both. She independently began talking with them about college, and it went so well that we retained her for SAT test prep and other college readiness prep. It was worth the investment!

Mr.Burch was very accommodating, flexible and professional. I have always had a very hard time with math and he was extremely patient with me. He is able to use layman's terms to explain math much more simply. The one on one time was extremely valuable. I will definitely be studying with him for my future courses.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
  • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
