Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a painter during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to use virtual tools for communication. If you’re hiring local interior and exterior painters, contact them to see if they’ll set up a video call to assess your project. During this call, they can get a feel for what needs to be done and may be able to give you a price quote.

Discuss potential plans and strategies for getting the work done safely. And ask whether they accept virtual or digital payments.

How can I find out if a painter is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To figure out whether a painter is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, visit your local jurisdiction or state’s government website for information.

The CISA website also provides a helpful resource: Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page is intended for a national audience and includes 16 different categories of critical infrastructure sectors. Some jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure, but not all of them do.

Can I use digital payments to pay for painting services?

Many painters accept digital payments through Venmo, Square Cash, Google Pay, PayPal, Zelle and others. Due to COVID-19, others may quickly adopt this technology to maintain social distancing practices and follow health recommendations.

Contact professionals beforehand to ensure they’re able to accept digital payments and continue to follow safety guidelines throughout your interactions. Compare local interior and exterior painters’ profiles to see which types of payments they accept.

Does a painter need to enter my home?

If you’re hiring an exterior painter, the painter will likely not need to enter your home. But for interior paint jobs, the painter will need to enter your home.

When talking to potential painters, discuss a strategy to make sure you and the painter(s) stay safe while they’re completing the job in your home. Or, you might want to discuss scheduling the paint job at a later date.

Do painters offer remote or virtual services?

Though painting has always been an in-person job, painters may be willing to offer some virtual help due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. If you come across painters’ profiles that state they offer remote services, message the painters to see what those services include.

How much value does painting add to a house?

Due to a lack of data available, it’s hard to say whether painting your home’s interior or exterior will increase its value. But there are some important things to keep in mind.

If you're thinking about selling your home, you might want to repaint areas that look especially worn, dull or chipped so your house looks fresh and new to potential buyers. On the other hand, it’s possible some potential buyers will repaint the home upon moving in. So if you have a limited budget, your money (and time) might be better invested in other types of home projects, such as remodeling your bathroom or kitchen, installing new floors or fixing broken appliances

When in doubt, check with your realtor before making a final decision.

How often should you paint your walls?

You should repaint your home interior once every few years, depending on the condition of the current paint.

Paint on walls fades over time, regardless of the room — it could happen in a bedroom, kitchen, dining room, living room or bathroom. However, paint that is exposed to more dirt, particularly flat or matte paint textures, may need repainting more frequently.

Areas of the bathroom or kitchen that routinely get touched may show signs of collecting dirt and grease over time. These would require more frequent painting.

If you're ready to repaint the walls in your home, get free estimates from the best painters near you.

How long does it take to paint a room?

The length of time it takes to paint a room varies, depending on a couple of factors. For example, the size of the job makes a difference. With a small bedroom, or with only a wall or two that have to be painted, the job can be done in half a day. Larger jobs take longer.

Also, if there are several different colors being used, the job may take longer, as one may have to dry before the other is applied. A 12-by-12 room with one color may take a morning. With multiple colors, the job may stretch into the afternoon.

Before you hire an interior painter near you, ask them how long it will take to paint the room(s) in your home.

Do you tip painters?

Yes, it’s best practice to tip house painters if you’re pleased with their work. Painters perform detailed, skilled work that can last for many years, if not decades.

Tipping house painters is good etiquette. You can base the tip on the size of the crew, and request the amount to be evenly divided. Or, you can leave a tip based on the size of the job and leave it up to the foreman to decide how it is distributed among the crew. Sometimes — especially with big projects — the painters on the job change during the course of the project, so it’s often customary to leave one tip for the whole job.

Shout out to A OK Painting. They were professional, calling when they were running late and verifying that we still wanted our house painted. They were extremely reasonable and very punctual. I will hire them again for my next big painting job.

Respect the customers request; respond to request and follow through in a more professional manner. The project started well however, as the job progressed paint drops were spilled on the floors and other areas paint shouldn't have gone. I requested of the painter (Tim) to use drop cloths and trimming tape, he stated he would going forward. (The home was void of all but 1 piece of furniture). As the job progressed I notice more paint in different floor and wall areas other than where it should have been, this led to a 2nd request. I had to have a 3rd conversation with the business owner for which he stated each time he would comply but, did not. The job went over the time frame initially quoted by almost a week. The contract specified 1/3 payment upfront, remaining 2/3 when job is finished. (Had I not paid the initial 1/3 I would have terminated the job). He called me at approximately between 9:45pm and 10:30pm (from my home) stating he had finished the job and wanted the remaining payment. I explained that I was having dinner with my family and that this unorthodoxed time of payment was never discussed. And In addition no walk through viewing of the job could be done at night. The owner became very agitated, stated he had done his job, wanted his payment because he had workers waiting for their pay. After repeating his position a couple of times, I responded with I'll see him the usual time the next morning for inspection of the job. I was unnerved and hoped I wouldn't have to call authorities out the next morning. Upon arriving home that night I couldn't believe my eyes. Window blinds and outlets were not replaced, paint drops on the floor in various areas, paint on my carpets, paint on cabinets, etc. My family and I prayed in Hope's that there would be a peaceful resolution. That morning the owner and worker was pleasant and the owner started with an apology and explanation (for which I appreciated). They cleaned up the paint on the floors, carpet and walls. Stated he'd return to touch up areas after laminate and carpet is installed. I've found other areas of paint on kitchen cabinets, missing paint on closet shelves since the inspection. If you hire this company make sure you request the usage of drop cloths and trimming tape during prepping period (before painting begin). I've decided to do my on touch ups instead of having OPI honor the contract. I've had my wood floors refinished therefore I'll take a chance on my on work.

Excellent workmanship and a great quality job for the price. Brush It On Paint Co. painted the exterior of our home with the care and attention to detail that your major investment deserves. We had very good communication on the trim, doors, shutters and siding. An absolute necessity when using three different colors. Ashe's team was prompt, courteous, and professional. We are already planning an interior project for the holidays. We would recommend his company for your next project. Longpoint family in Portsmouth

After thirteen years, we decided we needed to freshen and lighten up our 2,000 sq. ft. house. After contacting three paint companies and reviewing their bids, we decided on Mark Barrett and Top Notch for the job. Other than instantly liking Mark, we believed that a general contractor (rather than just a paint guy) would be able to help with some repair work, as well as the painting. Entry, living room, dining room, den, kitchen, stairway, and upstairs hall and bathroom were our challenge, and Mark and his crew hit the ground running. Mark and his crew are focused professionals, and there was very little downtime in their day. We were anticipating a five day inconvenience, and were blessed with three and a half days of very little inconvenience. Even our dog was not disturbed by all the hustle and bustle. After all is said and done, we are very happy with the results of the painting and repair, and will definitely recommend Top Notch to our friends and neighbors. Also, we are hoping to work with Top Notch on other projects in the not too distant future. Thank you Top Notch General Contracting for making this job as painless as possible.

Antonio Andersen (Touch of Brilliance Painting owner) is not trustworthy and is a thief. After I was forced to cancel my paint request with him (because I was unable to purchase my home), he agreed to give me the paint he had purchased for the job and the remaining money. After a month of silence from Antonio my boyfriend (from another phone number) was able to get into contact with him. Antonio said he was in the process of moving and that he would return my money the next week. A week goes by and still nothing. Then I get a text from him on May 2, 2017 saying that he didn't forget about me and that he was trying to sell the paint and give me a full refund of $1475. That was the last time I heard from him. I have called, emailed, texted and done everything in my power to reach out to him. I tried to give him more time because he was moving but now Antonio refuses to contact me, or return my money. This entire experience has left me feeling so violated and hopeless. I did nothing to deserve this treatment and would hope that you take this review into great consideration before working with Antonio Andersen.

Here’s a before and after picture of my stairs leading up to my condo! I’ve messaged several other people on thumbtack and it seemed like no one could or would do the job. He paid attention to detail, walked me through the whole process and completed this project for me in such a quick amount of time even with it being ridiculously hot outside! His prices cannot be beat and honestly I don’t care how much he was going to charge .. you cannot pay for his attitude, attention to detail and passion for the work he’s doing. He does way more than paint! My condo is now ready for my tenant and I’m ready to book him again for work like flooring, paint, pressure washing and more for my forever home! Thanks again Daniel! Could not have asked for a better experience.

I hired Pedro to paint pretty much the entire interior of my 2100 sqft home. I had already started doing it but I messed it all up. Pedro not only finished the remainder but also fixed all my mistakes. The job was done in 3 days time and his price was easily 2/3 that of any other bid. He was even willing to work around all my junk. Any issues I found were quickly corrected. Highly recommend.

I reached out to Isaac Contracting to prep and paint my vintage 1955 kitchen cabinets. These cabinets had been very poorly painted at some point in the past by someone who did not know what they were doing. James replied to my inquiry expediently, letting me know his experience and availability. During his initial inspection of the job, he showed me the numerous flaws the prior person had made (some even I hadn’t noticed) and what he could do to eliminate them. James is extremely knowledgeable, and I learned quite a bit while talking with him. On our scheduled day, he arrived on time with his gear and expertly prepped the kitchen area and cabinets. He spent 8 hours working meticulously on my cabinets. His final product completely surpassed my expectations. My cabinets look amazing! His pricing is more than fair for the amount of effort and detail he puts into his work, and I will be contacting him for more business in the future. Folks, if you’re looking for an honest hard worker with experience, James is most definitely your guy!

I must admit, even though it's wrong, I had hesitation about hiring a woman to paint my built-in bookshelf. But, Carolyn did the absolute best job. We've hired several painters over the years and none have come close to the professionalism and quality of work Carolyn gave us. My bookshelf and built-in desk turn out perfect. It was flawless. Looked like it was all brand new. She explained the entire process to us, was right on schedule and did an excellent job cleaning up afterwards. Totally awesome work!!!
